Artemis Two Breaks Distance Record, Flies by Moon

Artemis II.

Crew just smashed the record for the farthest humans have ever been from Earth, hitting

over 252,000 miles out.

During their lunar flyby, this is NASA's first crewed moon mission since Apollo 17 back

in 1972, with three Americans and one Canadian astronaut on board.

The Orion capsule, earlier this week, less than an hour before the six hour flyby kicked

off, they topped Apollo 13's old mark of 248,000, 655 miles from 1970.

By the end, they pushed it even further by more than 4,100 miles, all while grabbing never

before seen views of the moon's far.

Side, the team woke up to a special message from Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell, who passed

the way last August and flew on Apollo 8's first lunar.

Trip.

They even carried his Apollo 8 mission patch on board, calling it a real honor as they

geared up for the close pass.

This flyby uses the same free return trajectory, Apollo 13 did after its explosion, slingshotting

around the moon with Earth's and lunar gravity.

To save fuel no landing, just to figure a path home.

They'll zip by at about 4,070 miles closest, hitting speeds of 3,139 miles per hour.

Now emerging from behind the moon, they're four days from Pacific Splashdown on Friday,

paving the way for Artemis III's docking test next year and,

Blue Prince at the South Pole by Artemis IV in 2028.
