This week, the city released its first free pre-approved designs for accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, like tiny homes. These plans aim to tackle the areas ongoing housing shortage by making construction simpler and cheaper. Officials worked with architects to create designs suited for Anchorage's cold climate and terrain. The initial one is an 800-square-foot open-concept unit built over a two-car garage. A smaller version comes out soon, and the most budget-friendly option is planned for this summer. Three years ago, the city updated its building codes to ease ADU permits and numbers have risen since then, but Claire Ross from the Assembly's legislative office says they're still far short of goals. She stresses the need for diverse options, from apartments to single-family homes and ADUs to keep young people in town.
