The American Spiritual Ensemble will perform at 7.30pm in Jane Hollig-Brock, Recital Hall at Samford University. This concert celebrates the American Negro spiritual, a tradition born from enslaved Africans that still influences culture today. The ensemble focuses on preserving these powerful songs through live shows and education. Founded in 1995, it's the only professional group dedicated just to spirituals. They've toured worldwide, mixing spirituals with classical, Broadway, and dance pieces to keep the music alive for new listeners. At the heart of it all is founder Ever McCorvey, a Montgomery native with a doctorate from the University of Alabama. He sung on big stages like the Metropolitan Opera and Kennedy Center and performed in over 23 countries. Now he leads groups in New York and Columbus while advocating for the arts nationwide.
