Alvarez's Spring Slump: Back Tightness Sidelines Mets Catcher

Metz Catcher Francisco Alvarez left Thursday spring training game against the Astros early after his back tightened up. He had struck out in his only at bat and caught for the starter over three innings before manager Carlos Mendoza pulled him as a precaution. In the fourth inning with the bases loaded in two outs, Mendoza sent young catcher Jose Alar up to pinch hit instead. Alar drew a walk that scored a run and put the Metz ahead three to nothing. Mendoza explained after the game that it was just tightness in Alvarez's back and they are calling him day to day. He added that during the regular season, Alvarez would have kept playing through it. Alvarez was on fire this spring, going into the game with a strong batting line. After that one at bat, he sat at 8 for 22, hitting 364 with three doubles, one home run, and four runs batted in over. 10 games.
