This created a new challenge, as the state had no set process in place. Locals showed strong support with a large prayer service, and candlelight vigil at a South Anchorage church on February 23. Many stressed Alaska's tradition of looking out for the vulnerable, like sharing food during freezes or checking on neighbors in extreme cold. Experts note that splitting of families during detention causes real trauma for kids and teens, with lasting emotional harm from even brief, separations or uncertainty, without safeguards, risks of uneven treatment grow in this uncharted area.
