Alabama Senator Proposes Prison System Overhaul

He spoke on priority talk radio earlier this week about two key bills aimed at fixing serious problems. Senate Bill 84 would let the Alabama Department of Public Health take charge of sanitation in prison kitchens and jails. And Senate Bill 316 would set up a full-time prison oversight coordinator. The first bill targets food services run by the Department of Corrections and local jails. Right now, there's no real standard for keeping things clean. Just a rule that food has to be wholesome. This new measure would mean regular inspections, reports on issues, and steps to fix violations right away. Senator Stutz pointed out real problems like kitchens going months without hot water. He says those delays are unacceptable and show why stronger rules are needed. Giving health officials real power to follow up would stop that from happening again.

That agency already audits state spending well, and this person would watch inmate treatment and facility operations closely. They report to a new oversight committee to ensure fixes get made.
