Alabama GOP: Unity or Division?

0:00This is Cory, and here's what is making news across Birmingham right now. Alabama House Republicans recently showed unanimous support for Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter. All 75 members of the GOP caucus signed a letter backing him ahead of the State Party's winter meeting on March 7. On the surface, it looks like total agreement within the group. Behind the scenes though, things were differently among Montgomery politics. The group holds tight control through committee spots, bill approvals, and access to donors and lobbyists. This creates a system built on favors and the fear of getting sidelined. Legislators know the risks of speaking out. Bills from dissenters often stall in committee, district needs get ignored, and public scotings happen in caucus meetings. Over time, many just fall in line to avoid trouble. This dynamic has led to questions about loyalty to the party platform versus leadership demands. You can see it as a drift from conservative values that voters expect.
