Alabama Bill Lets Students Sue Athletic Association

State Senator Clyde Chamblis, from Prattville, pushed legislation through the Senate Education Budget Committee on Wednesday. It led students in the New Coast Act school choice program sue the Alabama High School Athletic Association over certain eligibility fights. The measure creates a legal path for these kids to get court orders or compensation. That would kick in, if an athletic group rules against them, purely because they are choose act participants. This billed on bigger tensions around school choice and sports. Governor Kay Ivey and House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter are already suing the Athletic Association. They challenge a rule that benches transfer students using choose funds for a full year of athletics. Drew Harrow from the governor's office explained it simply during the hearing. He said the bill stops discrimination tied just to C.A. to choose status and gives families real options if issues pop up.
