Afghan Immigrant Dies in ICE Custody

0:00On March 16th, here's the latest out of Durham. A 41-year-old Afghan immigrant died at a Dallas hospital shortly after being detained by immigration authorities. Muhammad Nazir Pactiawal passed away on Saturday at Parkland Hospital just one day after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took him into custody. ICE arrested him Friday during a targeted operation for alleged fraud against the SNAP Food Aid Program back on September 16th and a theft charge. From November 1st, while in processing, he reported no medical history but later complained of shortness of breath and chest pains. His family expressed shock, saying he was strong and healthy with no illness, and his six children keep asking when he'll come home. Pactiawal had worked with U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan and arrived as a refugee after the Taliban takeover in August 2021. On Saturday morning, staff notices tongue swelling during breakfast and despite life-saving efforts, he died at 9.10am.

1:00ICE says the cause is still under investigation. Deaths in ICE custody have risen sharply this fiscal year, with 14 reported since October 1st, putting them on track to exceed last year's total.
