Afghan Immigrant Dies in ICE Custody

Muhammad Nazir Pakti Awal, a 41-year-old former Afghan special forces soldier, was detained by immigration and customs enforcement agents on. Friday morning outside his Dallas area apartment, he passed away on Saturday from unknown causes according to a veteran-led advocacy group. Pakti Awal had evacuated Afghanistan with his family in 2021 during the U.S. withdrawal and was living in Richardson, Texas with his wife. And six children, including an 18-month-old. His asylum case was still pending while he worked at a local halal market as the family's main provider. The advocacy group Afghani Vak express shock, noting it is rare for a healthy man his age to die so soon after entering custody. They shared that his family was told he was taken to a Dallas hospital Friday night and was alive Saturday morning before his sudden death.
