This is Hope. Welcome to the podcast. Whatever kind of day you've stepped into, thank you for choosing to be here. Maybe things feel confusing right now. Maybe you're trying to change your mindset, trying to speak kinder words to yourself, trying to believe something better as possible, but the words don't land. Maybe affirmations feel uncomfortable. Maybe they feel out of reach. Maybe if you're honest, they feel like lies. If that's where you are today, I want you to know this. Nothing is wrong with you. You're not failing at self-growth. You're not doing healing wrong.
03You're a human being, trying to shift patterns that took years to form, and that is tender, brave work. Let's just rest here for a moment. In this space where nothing needs to be perfect, where you don't have to force yourself to believe anything you're not ready for. So let's breathe together. Inhale, exhale. Okay, let's begin. When affirmations feel like lies, it's usually not because the words are wrong. It's because the distance between who you feel you are and who you want to become feels impossibly wide. Your nervous system is wired for familiarity, even when familiarity hurts. So when you try to introduce a new thought like I am worthy or I am enough, your brain sometimes pushes back. Not because it's untrue, but because it's unfamiliar. There's actually research on this. Studies on cognitive dissonance and self-affirmation show that when a statement feels too far from your current self-concept, your mind can reject it.
05And the affirmation can feel hollow or uncomfortable. One study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that affirmations are most effective when they're aligned with values or truths you can somewhat agree with. Not statements that feel like they belong to a different person entirely. And I think that's where a lot of us get stuck. We're told to repeat these big bold affirmations. I love myself completely or I am overflowing with confidence. But inside we're thinking, no, I'm not. Not yet. So I want to offer you something gentler. An affirmation doesn't have to be a declaration. It can be an intention. It can be a direction you're facing, not a place you've arrived. Instead of, I am confident, you might say, I am learning to trust myself. Instead of, I love who I am, you might say, I am open to treating myself with more kindness. Instead of, I am healed, you might say, I am giving myself what I need to heal.
11These are still affirmations. They still shift the atmosphere inside you, but they do it with compassion instead of pressure. There's another study from Carnegie Mellon University showing that even small, believable affirmations help reduce stress responses in the brain. You don't need massive statements that feel foreign. You need honest ones that feel possible. That's where change begins. In the small truths, you can actually hold. So today, let's practice a few together. Affirmations that are gentle, believable, and rooted in compassion. Affirmation one. I am open to seeing myself with more kindness. Affirmation two. I don't have to believe fully yet. I just need to be willing. Affirmation three. I am becoming someone who speaks to myself with love. Let's pause. Breathe again. Inhale and on the exhale, release any pressure to be further along than you are.
13If affirmations feel like lies, don't force them. Don't abandon them either. Adjust them. Shape them into words you can actually carry. Healing doesn't ask you to pretend. You don't have to leap from doubt to certainty. You just have to lean a little closer to the truth of who you're becoming. Thank you for being here. Thank you for your honesty, for your willingness, for the quiet courage it takes to keep showing up for yourself. If this moment offered even a small shift of ease, share it with someone who might be wrestling with their own thoughts today. And now a quick word from a partner on this journey of affirmation and mindset. If using affirmations feels hard, or you're trying to build a mindset practice that actually feels supportive, I want to tell you about the app we created called self-pause. It's available for both Android and Apple devices, and it's filled with guided affirmations, personalized tracks, and tools to help you gently reshape the way you speak to yourself. It's designed to meet you where you are, not where you think you should be.
16So if you're ready, pause the scroll, download self-pause, and choose one small practice that helps your mind soften and open a little more each day. You have a meaningful day ahead. Be gentle with yourself. You're growing even now. Thank you.
