New York Giants linebacker Abdul Carter is switching his jersey number to number 3 ahead of the 2026 season. The team shared the news on social media this Friday. Drafted third overall in 2025 out of Penn State, Carter made an impact right away as a rookie. In his first year, he wore number 51 while racking up four sacks and 43 total tackles. That performance set high expectations for his next step with the Giants. The move caps a winding path for Carter's number choice. He initially eyed number 56, but is retired in honor of Giants' great Lawrence Taylor. Next, he went for number 11. His Penn State favorite, only for the family of former quarterback Phil Sims to block it, since that's also retired. Number 3 opened up after Russell Wilson, who wore it last, hit free agency, and won't return to New York. Taylor never fully settled into 51, so this switch brings a fresh vibe into his sophomore
