Abdul Carter's New Jersey Number, Giants' Draft Decisions

About this episode

Abdul Carter, New York Giants edge rusher, is set to change his jersey number, following the Giants draft photo hinting at a new number. Carter, who wore 51 last season, had initially sought 11 and 56, but both were declined. He played in 17 games, starting 6, with 4 sacks, 43 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 2 fumble recoveries. The Giants replaced Brian Daboll with John Harbaugh, who won a Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2013. With the 5th pick, the Giants consider drafting wide receivers like Carnell Tate or Makai Lemon, or offensive linemen and defensive stars like Caleb Downs from Ohio State.

The first round pick wore number 51 during his rookie season, but just posted on X that a new number is coming soon. This comes after the Giants shared a photo marking 51 days until the 2026 NFL draft. Carter wanted to keep number 11 from his Penn State days, but it's retired for Superbowl quarterback Phil Sims. Sims's family turned down his request. He then asked for number 56, honoring Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, who said no, and advised him to choose another and make it famous. As a rookie, Carter played in all 17 games, starting six. He notched four sacks, 43 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two fumble recoveries. That trailed some other first round edge rushes like James Pierce with 10 and a half sacks. The Giants shook up their staff too, firing hit coach Brian DeBull and hiring John Harbaugh.

Harbaugh comes from the Ravens after 18 seasons and a Superbowl went in 2013. New York finished last year 4 and 13. Now picking 5th overall, the Giants face big draft decisions. Mod drafts point to why receivers like Cardinal Tate or McKay Lemon, or maybe offensive lineman, and defensive stars such as Caleb Downes from Ohio. State.
