A Reflection for When Pain Makes Us Harder

Sometimes what we learn from suffering is how to make sure nobody ever does that to us again.

Jesus tells a parable about a man who owed a debt he could never repay. Facing the loss of everything, he begged for mercy, and his debt was forgiven.

But when someone else owed him a much smaller amount, he refused to show the same mercy and had the man thrown in jail.

He learned that he never wanted to be powerless again. Instead of learning mercy from the mercy he received, he became harsher.

And eventually, the mercy he had been given was withdrawn.

Life offers many lessons. May our pain not teach us to become harder.
