I don't know if we can put much stuck into what Bill Polian who thinks Lamar Jackson still would be an excellent wide receiver in the NFL Believes on this subject But the bottom line is there's that at play so I don't think people were not voting for Bill Ballachic because they believe he's not Hall of Fame worthy Some people were not voting for him because they were trying to punish him for what happened in 2007 For the spy gate situation which Mayor may not have been worse than what was let out Obviously, Roger could help destroy the tapes huge conspiracy about that etc etc The other aspect to this of course is they changed the rules of how this was voted for

5:12And how the votes were being able to be dealt by the 50 members of the media who were able to vote on this And apparently I want to say there was 150 total votes at play and you had to get like you said that That 40 vote threshold and so some of the people were trying to figure out how to disperse their votes And apparently this was the first year that they were doing it this way And so there might have been some confusion with some of the voters It's like I think Bellachic is going to get in So let me make sure that I vote for these other guys to ensure they get in as well And I don't really know if the way that they did the voting is the best way to do what moving forward They might make some changes to that to try to help educate some of these voters on what to do So there probably was a little bit of malicious intent and then there was probably a little bit of confusion And that's my thought as to why Bellachic is not a first ballot Hall of Famer Surely it has nothing to do with him not being worthy of being a first ballot Hall of Famer Because I think anybody who's watched football over the last 25 years should realize that Bill Bellachic is most deserving of being a first ballot Hall of Famer

6:20And surely he will get there very soon It's just I think it went sideways with this voting process and then the punishment It's a good breakdown. It's a hundred percent pettiness And but a good add on by you that format might have had something to do with it as well Bill Bellachic by the way didn't point this out Reportedly puzzled by this result And apparently the quote the quote that I heard was Six super balls what's a guy got to do and he said it in that tone I think probably with that so anyway it is as a kid say it is what it is But it is just You know I say it about Barry Barnes. I'll say the same sentence Why don't we even have a Hall of Famer if you didn't do that right if Bill Bellachic isn't it or why do we even have a Hall of Famer So that applies to him as well All right two Super Bowl 60 and he will get there just not on the first ballot but still Super Bowl 60 Let's give the the four minute breakdown of this if you will where where do your eyes go with this?

7:20Well, I've started everything with the favorite of this game which is the Seattle Seahawks trying to get an understanding of what they are most likely to do Offensively in this game when they start the ball with the ball they get the opening kickoff What is their first drive going to look like what is their plan and philosophy going to be more so the philosophy than anything else as to how to attack this Patriots defense we know that the Seattle Seahawks are the fourth most run heavy team in the NFL in early downs in the first half of games Which is what I basically Utilize when I'm trying to break down intent by an offense is what are you doing on those early downs in the first half? I don't want second half that's a reaction. I don't want third down that's a reaction What is your game plan initially? They're the fourth most run heavy team over the course of the season Interestingly enough we know that the Patriots have any lead run defense especially with note Williams out on the football field They are by my metrics when note Williams is on the field the number one best run defense in the NFL

8:22Oddly enough though teams that have gone up against the New England Patriots have run the ball on first half early downs At the third highest rate in the NFL so they're going up involuntarily Running at a very high rate against a very good run defense. I looked at the other two teams that have high run rates against their defenses The top two teams in the NFL. It is the Green Bay Packers and the Buffalo Bills what those two teams have in common is they've been bad against the run 27th for the Packers on first half early downs and 30th for the Bills on first half early downs That is what those defenses rank so it makes sense teams would run the ball a lot there But why in the world are teams running a lot against the New England Patriots when the Patriots are holding these runs In check at like top five rates for every efficiency metric that I have EPA per attempt success rate yards per carry explosive run rate the list goes on and on and on The issue is in my opinion go ahead. No go ahead. Sorry. I thought you were done that go ahead. I was just going to say the issue

9:27I think the reason that we're seeing this is because those quarterbacks have been terrible that the Patriots have gone up against and as a result those teams Don't want their quarterbacks dropping back past lot they want to lean more into the run game even though those runs are not very successful So one of my first questions is just we know they want to run the ball. Are they going to try to run the football here despite going up against a good run defense And will those runs have any success at all so that's something that we're going to see answered early on in this game And how quickly they might pivot if that's not successful. And then the second question that I have in this game when we're talking about Seox starting with the ball and again, I'll be here next Wednesday. We'll talk more about some of the other angles that I'm approaching with this game is What defense will the New England Patriots utilize to cover the passing attack if the Seox do then flip into the passing attack a little bit more frequently? We know that the Patriots have utilized top 10 rates of man coverage over the course of the season. However, what I think a lot of people do is they look at like league averages from defenses and they say, oh yeah, the Patriots are a top 10 man cover team.

10:29But what you really need to look at is how do defenses play the Seattle Seahawks versus how those defenses play every single other opponent that they face? And what you'll find when you do that is you'll see that teams play man coverage at a seven and a half percentage different lower rate against the Seahawks then they do against every other team that they play because they have gotten burned too often by JSN and they don't want to man up against JSN. So I'm envisioning that the Patriots will lean more into zone coverage in this game and not play as much man as they're used to playing. And that's going to throw a different spin into how people are breaking down this game. So that's a second question. How do the Patriots decide to play coverage when going up against JSN? I'm trying to try to read between the lines or dance between the raindrops. What other expression is does it feel like you're leaning Seahawks in all of that? I'm trying to glean what you haven't gotten anywhere on the side, but under on Kenneth Walker rushing yards is where I'm getting out here.

11:30I think they might have to pivot a little bit more into the past to be continued war next week to be continued. Tom Pellissair just reported a few minutes ago after the Browns informed defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz this morning that they were passing him over to hire Todd Monkin as head coach. Swartz was visibly visibly upset said goodbye in the building and told other coaches he's not coming back per sources. Swartz is under contract with Cleveland and they would like to retain him, but his future is now unclear.

13:34So there it is. Jim Schwartz says I'm taking my toys and I'm going home. That's it. He didn't you didn't hire me from within. And if you're Jim Schwartz, Jim Schwartz, it was once the head coach of the Detroit Lions back in the day, people will remember that more than anything for the little squabble little scuffle he had with Harbaugh at the end with Jim Harbaugh like hit him too hard for Jim Schwartz is liking. And I think Jim Schwartz is probably right about that Jim Harbaugh's little cookie. But since then, since he was the head coach of the Lions has been. You know, the defensive coordinator and Buffalo and Philly was a defensive assistant at times before he was the DC with the Cleveland Browns, but if you're Jim Schwartz, you have to think look at look, look at our team is but look at our defense. I ran this defense and you're not going to hire me from within. You're going to hire this dude. Dooses. So there it is NFL head coaching carousel. It's like junior high school. Let me just tell you folks. That's an experience. Okay. College hoops. You've done some show prep, which I always love that you do. What would you like to focus on here at college basketball?

16:39Well, I just thought we would talk about some things that are kind of interesting that like free throw percentage, three point percentage, defensive three point percentage. Because I think people who are going to now who don't really follow this stuff real closely, who are now going to start following college basketball. If you know these things, it can help you in close games. It can help you in game. It can help you in a lot of ways. So I just thought we would talk about that. Well, let's talk about free throw percentage. Because what I'm always fascinated about with free throw percentage is this notion of, we talk about this with field goals too. But it really applies to free throw defense, right? Free throw defense quote unquote, right? Which they're obviously there's no such thing. But what our eyes don't realize watching it is how some teams are just way fortunate or way unfortunate. Just on things we don't process as humans. So please, the floor, although Miami of Ohio yesterday had their swim team in speedos behind the basket for free throws. And that could theoretically help it could. It could. We'll have to do a deeper dive on that. That's right.

17:41Okay, Miami of Ohio. Still on defeat. The only undefeated besides Arizona now Miami of Ohio, the Red Hawks. Okay, I took them yesterday minus 150 when they were down. Anyways, free throw percentage is interesting. What I did is I looked at the number one team and the worst team. Just so you get an idea. So the number one team is Saint Mary's number one at 81.8. The worst team is app state at around 61.6. So probably midpoint is around 71 ish. So if you're about the 175th team, you're probably shooting about 71%. Now of big name teams that might be around in the tournament. I looked at the top 10% of teams teams at state in the top. So Saint Mary's obviously number one Illinois number four. That's kind of big because Illinois might be around it toward the end. Vanderbilt number 29 and Louisville number 35. So these are teams that I looked at that could theoretically make their way past the sweet 16 and are very high up in the top 10% of free throw percentage, which obviously helps you in close games and helps you overall as well.

18:46That was that was the free throw percentage. So a couple of interesting teams there. And let me just cross. Let me just cross check with yesterday. I was doing the formula for the first time Illinois number one and adjusted offense at Ken Palm 29th adjusted defense. That's the only thing keeping matter of the formula for right now. This is interesting. Continue. Please. Yeah. Then three point percentage shooting it, shooting the three pointer. So of course Colorado state. If you watch them, you know this Colorado state is number one in the nation at 41.5%. They play at a snails pace, but yet go over every game because they make a zillion threes. So they're at 41.5% number 365 wars team in the country rider university lives close near Princeton University there at 26.7%. So your midpoint is somewhere probably around 34 for like an average team. Now in your top teams that are in your top 10% of three point percentage. And this is also this is probably key also for mid majors.

19:52Yes, they're going to try to pull an upset you want you want teams that can hit the three theoretically didn't pull the upset. But I was state number four at 40% Texas tech number 11 a team I freaking love. I love Texas tech just because they're so tough offensively. Now they may not be that good defensively. I think there's seven in number 40 on defense. But wow, are they there's a stick back in our offense. Texas tech Purdue 21 3 point percentage Arkansas 23 UCLA 26 Texas a number 31 and Iowa 33. So those are your big name teams in the top 10% of 3 point percentage making him. Who is that's kind of interesting. And yeah, no, I was going to ask maybe you're getting to this who I'm curious who of the the contenders, if you will, are really bad at both of those categories. Free throws and three point shooting. I'm curious. Oh, you know, I didn't I didn't look at that. I should probably look at that for that. I mean, that would be interesting heading into the big dance because these again, these are the things that we don't necessarily think about but could really rear its head. And that point you made about mid majors.

20:58We always do a giant killer segment on this show before before the big day. I was going to tell you right now. Oh, please go ahead. Some mid mid some mid majors. St. Louis is not I don't know if you call them a mid major, but they're really good on offense. They're number five. So they could be a good five and 3 point shooting percent. They could be a good team to take theoretically as like maybe like an eight seed or something against a much higher seed if they got hot from three. Belmont Liberty Akron is another team that can shoot to three. Again, if these teams can make the tournament, they would be interesting. NC State is a team you don't hear a lot about their number 13. Looking down here, Nevada number 17. These are teams on the periphery, so to speak, Miami, Ohio number eight team. We just talked about them. Arkansas, we already talked about as being in the top, but I'm talking about teams that are maybe not, you know, San Diego State. There's a team we don't really talk about them. They're typically known for defense. They're actually actually pretty good at shooting their 28th in three points shooting this year. So that's pretty impressive.

22:00Yeah, when I was getting out with the with a giant killer segment that we do before the big dance Nate Keating, who used to be over at ESPN. He was sort of the Godfather of this. And then he does it with his buddy Jordan through the years, but the two biggest characteristics for a team to have a first or second round upset or anything beyond that, but typically first or second round upset in the big dance is what you described a team that is lights out shooting and behind the arc. Or the other thing is the opposite, right, which is a team that is so slow with their pace that they minimize the total number of possessions, therefore leveling the playing field against the team that is clearly more talented than them, which makes. Colorado State would be a perfect example of that. They're number one, three points shooting. They play super slow. If they hit 60% of their threes, they could knock somebody off if they're in it. Yeah. Through all the way to go get the chair to go bring it back as a whole thing now I learned my lesson if I go out again I'm going to put the damn chair there of course people can ignore your chair to that's all no say but you know you have to put the chair what a what a strange regional quirk that is putting a chair in your spine they'll do that old DC i'll tell you that much no chairs in the parking lot because those chairs would be gone in a second i'll tell you that okay back to the that's the college basketball for a second. You hadn't finished your rant before and then you actually did some research to answer one of my questions on the break so let's pick up where you left off here. Okay so I guess we just let's let's get rid of that question that you had which was who are the we talked about the free throws in the three point shooting who are like surprising teams that you would think. On the other side of the bad side of that and obviously you're not going to find too many in the bottom 10% if they're good teams obviously but I did look at it real quick and free throw percentage of Cincinnati at 3409.

27:07So that's you know top bottom 5% they're probably not going very far anyways North Carolina 322 and now this is interesting Iowa state at 305 that's pretty bad there's 365 teams by the way so if you're 305 that's real bad and free throw percentage shooting so that's kind of interesting because I like Iowa state and then on 3.0 percentage is teams that shoot it well. We were talking about what about good teams that shoot it poorly Mississippi state was really the only biggest name that I saw on the way bottom at 334 but midway through the Duke Blue Devils at 158 that's not very good. Very good interesting for a top team to shoot it at 158 that's I would say you know 45th percentile is so that's not very good number there. This stuff that inches your question yeah that's good because again this stuff is good to know when we're considering let's say March madness can a team with that kind of 3.0 percentage.

28:07Go seven what is it six games six games is it seven games six games six games. Well can a team go six games through a gauntlet of six games and have that not rear its head if you will that's great for in game this stuff is the more you know about this stuff because like if you see a teams 2 for 10 from 3. You could be like oh wait this is a great if Colorado state shoots 2 for 10 from 3. They're probably going to make a lot in the second half you know I mean you're going to see regression back so that's kind of interesting always to know these kind of numbers. Of course there's so many teams it's hard to know but anyways let's go to that one fact category that I was talking about before that I didn't get to yet 3 point defense. So this is a real thing this is a free defense which is like just you know speedos 3 point defense is a big deal do you take care of making sure they can't just shoot you out of the game. And it probably if you're a good team cuts down on the variance of you possibly losing in the tournament because somebody goes wild on you from 3 because you're so good at 3% to give you an idea.

29:09Number one in the nation you'll never guess this team Texas Arlington lets people shoot 25.4% that's pretty damn good. The opponents only get 1 out of 4 on them and cop in to give you the other side of it cop in state is at 40.6% so they're the worst so 4 out of every 10 go in against them. So probably halfway through is you know again somewhere in the 23 24 I'm sorry 33 34 number. But in that category so we have Arlington and number one now in big names we have you call number seven my favorite buttoned up team of all time as you know I like teams that are buttoned up don't make mistakes. Don't beat themselves you call number seven totally makes a lot of sense because that's what they do you know hurly will scream and yell and they will not allow threes. Vandy number eight that's pretty darn good USC 12. This UCLA 19 Tennessee 21 Clemson another team that I love is a kind of sneaky under the radar team because I love their coach and I love their buttoned up this 26th they don't allow it Zags 30 that's Gonzaga Michigan state my favorite of all defensive teams are number one in the country.

30:25Number 32 and Nebraska the very very surprising Nebraska team is 35th so that gives you a sense on who's stopping people from making threes to beat them yeah that's it's a huge stat and as Dr Bob just add a layer to this when you're doing preflop stuff which is not necessarily what Todd does. But keep in mind that if weakness is against weakness like if you're really bad at three point defense but the team you're facing is bad at three pointers then it mitigates your weakness also right so you have to. Great point you have to make sure you're talking about that kind of I mean this is this is great even for you like I bet against rider was playing somebody the other day now I knew riders are crappy defensive I mean offensive team I didn't know they were number one in the nation not making threes but I just knew they were terrible. So the other day there was a game in halftime and they had shot like four for 10 from three or something and they shot a high percentage I'm like there's just no way they're going to score again in the second half and so I bet them their team total under and halftime for the second half so this stuff can be very valuable if the more teams you know because then when you're looking at stats at halftime or in game and you see something that's anomalous you can say oh wait a second riders playing this decent team they're on the road they just shot amazing first half three.
