Today we'll have an opportunity to talk about community days, the kickoff program. Yeah, this is going to be one of a few episodes we kind of focus on community days hopefully but really get the launch here now with Sandy Gruber for starts at least in her coming on talking about the overall concept of community days, why community days and then a brief highlight of all of the activities going to be taking place during community days. But Sandy is joined by Bob Portwood, I'm going to be talking about the veterans lunch and

1:02it's going to be taking place and Duncan Reed from a camp west one joins us as well. So it should be fun. On a double our show, we welcome Sandy Gruber. How are you? I'm just fine and dandy, just fine and dandy.

2:03You are in charge or the chairperson of community days. I am. Don't know how I got there, but I am. You stood up when you should have sat down. I was sitting down, but everybody pointed at me. And it worked. It worked. Community days to you is what? Communication of all the great things of Lincoln City. Even though we can't really do 100% of it all, community days is celebration of how we all support each other, whether it's by donating to somebody or just participating in an event or showing up to say hi or honking your horn as you pass someone wave to people on. Whatever it is, we're celebrating that we're a community of people who take care of our neighbors and enjoys our neighbors. We start off on the 16th of April with Lincoln Pops, Big Band, Dan Sattletek, Lenny Beach Community Club. And then we go from there to what? Beach Bonfire at the Taft Beach. Northwest Natural puts on a great bonfire with big hot dogs and s'mores and lots of people

3:06show up and just chit chat with neighbors they may or may not have ever met. And we laugh a lot. And it's all free. Northwest Natural is putting this out for us. It also is the kickoff for the great Oregon coast garage sale as well. Yes it is and that will bring a ton of people into town and a ton of people spending money around garage sales and they'll all get new stuff that they're just kind of going home happy that they got. For Saturday of community days we've got a whole lit and have activities. We have quite a few things going on. Of course the great Oregon coast garage sale continues. Camp Westwind has an event where you can go out for the day. Slet's Bay Music Festival will be at the outlets. This one's a new event really excited about it. They're going to be playing music and allowing people to come in and play instruments. Try out instruments at the mall of all type of instruments and it's all free.

4:06It's all free and I don't know what instruments they're going to bring. It'll be indoors if it's raining, it'll be outdoors if it's nice and we're really excited about four hours of music at the mall. I love the one at the museum. Here in about the history, telling stories of our history around North Lincoln County is always a fun time. You might think you know everything, you do not know and that is a great little event at the museum. Second or third year we've done that. It's been fabulous. And children's day at the library. You say at the library is lots of activities going on to engage the kids, get the parents all excited about it. We're just celebrating the kids. It's the International Kids Day. On the 19th of April, the shot heard around the world 250th celebration of the beginning to the Revolutionary War, if you will, but the veterans, the American Legion post and the Lincoln City Parks and Rec. Yes, are putting on a barbecue at the Northwest 18th Street Plaza right near Bob's Beach

5:12books in that area, the public parking lot that's there. Free burgers and desserts and actually homemade pies. All sorts of good stuff to eat. It's by donation or free if you need to. We're just there to have a great time and celebrate the veterans in this community. New event coming up, disc golf. At the high school, they have a nine hole course now and they're going to introduce us to the course and to disc golf. I actually bought a set of discs. How are you ready to go? Yeah, yeah, they came in to have a tat. So, Pines Dine will have an evening of showstoppers. What's that? That is a first time event theater west is going to bring in the people who can sing in dance and they are going to be doing performances of, I don't know what yet because they're still putting it together and it's just going to be segments from different musicals and entertaining. And the sooner they have it together, the happier I'm going to be since I'm going to

6:13be the MC. Oh my, the voice of Lincoln City. Believe it or not, on Monday, the 20th of April, we will celebrate the Scooter Creek Discovery Park with the secrets of salsa. Yes, it'll be the really the first big event held at the park. And it's going to be food. It's going to be a kid's makers market. It's going to be a mini parade around the walkway, bring your costumes and your floats. If you make them, sleds by music festival is bringing kazoo's so people will have kazoo's so we can have some music going and it's just going to be great fun. We got to hurry along April 21. We got putt putt golf at the outlets and dark skies observation night at the rigana park. Yes, putt putt at the outlet mall. You'll go into different businesses playing one whole of putt putt and I don't know what the holes are going to look like and I don't think they know what the holes are going to look like. It's just going to be all fun, but it's going to be great fun.

7:15And second year for the dark skies event at rigana park fabulous event, especially if we have clear skies, but music, great people story telling and hopefully lots of stars in a great big telescope. April 22nd, we got a rotary luncheon and the Lakeview community event and I think that involves a free food as well. Free food and I apologize don't have the exact specifics right at the moment off the top of my head. Speaking of food on Thursday's the food drive and that is critically important for the pantry. That is a huge moment in it's where the community steps up full force every year, drops a food checks cash, honks at us, really supports us the food bank takes in. I think we took over $7,000 last year, $6,000. You can embarrass us by giving us too much. No, no, no. And you can start preparing now. And quickly we get the food drive on Thursday, arts and science on tap, the pelican on Thursday and the coitus community days luncheon at the beach club.

8:17So lots of things on Thursday as well Friday, Arbor Day in Trivia night. Trivia night. Got to have some trivia and there's going to be some local history too. Check out the museum before to learn a little bit about the community to answer questions. And on Saturday we got the pancake breakfast on and mose, the mudflat golf on so let's bathe, ducky durby, the D river and the community days banquet and we have a deadline for making a nomination for a recipient of an award. Yes, we do. We are putting it out on our Facebook page quite a bit. Nominate someone you know, we have five awards that we get about one is for under 18. The rest are for anybody in the greater Lincoln City community. And we want to know who's out there doing great, great, great things. Finally, on April the 26th, Surf and Earth Festival at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. And that winds up quite a litany of events. A great week of fun for the entire family.

9:20I don't know that there's an event that does not support the entire family. And of course, if people want more information, it is available on Facebook. Hey, welcome back to the Double R Show, Double R along with Commander Bob Portwood, the past commander of the American Legion Post here in Lincoln City. Post 97, yep. It is an active post, even though the membership is not large, Bob. Well, we've got a decent membership. Depends on whether you talk about people that actually come to the meetings or people that pay their dues. As any small club knows, that's two different things. No, it certainly is. But we do have a lot of activities forces such small numbers. We do. And speaking of which, we've got a hamburger hot dog feed coming up April 19th at the plaza at Johan plaza, next to Bob speech books. Yeah, absolutely. Sunday the 19th, we've done this before and it's been a lot of fun and it's good food.

11:24Yeah, we have an expert chef will be there to do all of the cooking, which helps a lot. And we've got a number of pie bakers as well that are stepped up and going to be baking pies. I just heard about that. That's, you know, I might just skip the hot dogs and go for the pie. Apple pie and hot dogs. Can you get more American than that? Now, it is on a very special day. It's the day the shot was heard around the world 250 years ago. Oh, yes. That is just an amazing feat, if you will, when you think about that, 250 years ago, shot heard around the world and coming up during community days, we'll celebrate that. Yeah, there was a different world back then. That's for sure. There was a different world. Now, on top of the pies, the hot dogs and the hamburgers, the bechips and all this kind of good stuff, and the place is right. There is no charge for this. Yeah, that's right.

12:25We're ordering veterans, so we're trying to get all the veterans we can round up to come to this thing. And I'm wondering if we could round up some ice cream to go along with that apple pie. Anybody from telebook listening? Donations are great, fully accepted, but there is no charge when we don't chase people around with our hands out or anything. It's just, if you want to make a donation, you don't even have to eat if you want to make a donation. Or you could eat not making a donation, I mean, it's a pretty good group that puts this thing on, and it is fun. Yeah, it really is, and the food is good, and the reason is right. That's correct. We have a lot of veterans around here, and we have a lot of veterans that could use help. And that's what the American Legion does, and this is honoring our veterans. It's worth coming to this thing just to shake a few hands and say, thank you for your service. I've told the story before, and I'm going to re-interred it again.

13:30One of the things that happens in every veteran's meeting there is the empty chair for the veteran that never came back. Yeah. We have a short-tailed relative of hours that has been found. He was shot down in World War II over Japan, was captured by the Japanese, put in a prison. The prison catches fire, and he is killed in the fire, not in the actual being shot down. They found his remains, and all of his remains are being brought back to North Dakota in July for actual, middle and burial. Now, that's nice. Once in a while, you hear a really good story coming out of the, what happened to a lot of the prisoners of war? We were very lucky in my family. I had five or six uncles that were in the service from World War II. Everyone of them came back. That is remarkable in itself, it absolutely is. And again, the veterans' luncheon is going to be taking a place really close to Bob's beach book.

14:34And right now, we're in the middle of spring break. Things are good, great, wonderful at the two bookstores, really? Yes, things are busy, and if you can get to the store, that's busy. If you can park, yes, the stores are doing well. And we're having fun dealing with people. People can be fun, and a bookstore is a place that they go because they want to, not because they have to. Then you've got two stores in town. Two stores, yeah, Bob's beach books and Robert's bookshop, the building with the airplanes sticking out the side. Why the airplanes sticking out the side? I bought it through the state auction site, and by the way, anybody who doesn't know about the state auction site should learn. They sell everything through there. It's amazing what they sell, but I was looking at it one day, saw that, and ended up buying it just for the fun of it. And I would have to think it probably attracts a lot of attention.

15:36Well, it does that. It makes a nice place marker on Highway 101. It was a process. Without a big gotty sign, you certainly know where Bob's, or not Bob's beach books, Robert's bookstores. Yeah, we were very careful. We went to the city first, make sure we could do it. And it turns out there is no regulation in Lincoln City about having an airplane in your parking lot. Even a part of an airplane. All right, Bob, we appreciate you being here. And again, thanks to the Bulls family for coming forth to cook up all of the burgers, hot dogs, and go and fill in the Silia B there. And we invite everybody of veterans and their spouses to come and have a free lunch. And that takes place again during community days here in Lincoln City, free hamburgers, hot dogs, and apple pies. Sunday, April 19th. And that's right down the street from Bob's Beach Book. She can't miss it.

16:37Even there'll be flags out flying in honor of the event. Yep. And again, it's the 250th anniversary of the shot heard around the world at Bob's Beach books. Two doors down with Bob Portwood. 17:38So hold it down and make it more fun. Queen's Reich and Casino. Shana Gwins! Shana Gwins, red concerts are better at the beach. With Duncan Reed and Duncan is with Camp Westwins, a marvelous property that a lot of us have never taken the advantage to go see. Yeah. It's kind of a hidden gem here in the community. It's just north of Lincoln City and I often get the response from people in the community. Hey, what camp western? What is that? You know? And we're trying to make an effort to get out and open our doors more to the local community and Earth Day is one of those events. How do you normally serve? Yeah, so good question. So we have a summer camp program. A lot of folks coming from the Portland area, but it's open to anyone. So that's for seven to 17-year-olds. And then for decades, we've hosted outdoor school, which is for six graders.

18:39We have a partnership with the Multnomah School District. So people coming from Multnomah County, but we also rent the site to anyone. You can go on our website and rent a weekend at Westwins or a cabinet Westwins. It's open to pretty much anyone. No, the big thing is how do you get there? Exactly. Yeah. For a lot of years, it was coming across the river and we still have that option occasionally, but just the quiet little sleepy cascade head wayside right there, the interpretive wayside right on Frazier Road off of Highway 101, the address is 7,500 North Frazier Road. And that's how people are getting in these days to come to our parking lot. It depends on the event. You know, you could also get there from night park. So coming across the river from night park. For Earth Day, we're having people coming in the address that I mentioned. And yeah, it's 11.30 to 4 p.m. What else could it be happening during the Earth Day out at Camp Westwins? Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So definitely free lunch. We'll start with that. Something that people need to know.

19:40But we do a beach cleanup event. We'll be having a bunch of our partner organizations talking about conservation work that's being done on site and in the area. So we have an opportunity to learn about what's happening there. And of course, a raffle because what would a event be without an opportunity to win something. So and the cost is free. Yeah, absolutely free. We just we just hope that it's going to be sunny because that's obviously going to add to the experience. But Rainer Shine will be holding the event out there Westwind April 18th. Come on out. A lot of people are still wondering what Camp Westwind is all about in why it's there. Yeah. That's a good question. So for many years, it was a YWCA camp from the 1930s. So it's been a summer camp for, you know, gosh, over 80 years now, 90 years, coming on 90 years. But recently in the early 2000s, a nonprofit by the name of the Westwind Stewardship Group formed and purchased the camp. And our mission is to preserve that 500 acres in perpetuity and offer outdoor education

20:43experiences for youth. So. Primarily for children, or are we doing adults as well or what? Great question. Yeah, focus is on children, but we do have adult programs. We have mushroom camp in the fall. We have spring foraging camp in the spring. We've done the welcoming the Sam and home event in the past, too. So yeah, primarily for youth, but it's opened everyone. The poll would say I miss if I did unmentioned the biosphere, the cascaded biosphere, correct. And you're the heart of it. Absolutely. Absolutely. We're great partners with the cascade head biosphere collaborative. And we are, yeah, we were hard of the biosphere. The cascade had seen a research area. And so, you know, our mission is, is right there aligned with all the other efforts to preserve and conserve that area at the mouth of the Sam and River. If there was a misunderstanding of what Camp Westwinds is all about, what would that be? The misunderstanding. Gosh, I don't know. I think maybe people think of it as kind of exclusive or not accessible.

21:49And although we're not technically open to the public, like a park, we do have several opportunities for people to come out like Earth Day. And it's open. You know, we've had a few more local people coming out and renting cabins and hosting local events over the past few years. So we could have eventually tagged about retreats for businesses. We have school groups that come out and and run day camps out there, you know, hikes on our property, about 10 miles of trails. And yeah, anything from that to family reunions and different opportunities for groups to come out and immerse themselves in the beautiful site that it is Westwinds. So if a group comes out and rents a part of the facilities, they've got to bring your own food or you've got the service. Yeah. Yeah. We have our own fully functioning commercial kitchen, kitchen staff that does full catering. We work with groups to adapt to many to their needs, but yeah, food is taken care of. We got cabins out there, big lodge where people can gather. So it's an all inclusive experience and the bedding situation, the bedding situation.

22:53I'll say rustic and we'll set expectations there and you'll go up from that. We've been actually doing a lot of work on our cabins over the past few years with a high school group from Portland. But yeah, it's their bunk houses, you know, that most of the cabins have about eight or nine beds in them. But we do have a couple of select kind of, we'll say premium cabins that people can rent that have their own kitchens and bathrooms and all of that if you're looking for that kind of experience. It is a marvelous piece of ground and is being preserved for generations to come. Absolutely. That's our hope and that's our mission as an organization. And yeah, we hope that the place is available to be enjoyed for generations to come, like you said. 24:56It is a wonderful event. April 30th, 5 o'clock for the camp tour, 6 o'clock for the dinner. It is a fundraiser to raise money for BB camp that takes place all summer long out at the benign breath. For people that have got a little ankle better, that's looking for an Easter egg hunt. We got a big one coming up April 4th, 11 o'clock is when activities begin. This is sponsored by the Lincoln City Colonies Club. And it's in the brand new Discovery Park, Discovery Park in the Bay Area of Lincoln City. A join us at the Skunakreek Discovery Park, free photo booth, $4 for face painting. The hunt starts at 12 noon and I emphasize 12 noon because it's normally over by 12 noon. If you're lucky. And there's thousands and thousands of Easter eggs that are put out for the various age groups from toddlers on up.

25:58But they can cleaned up with a hurry. Yeah, I'm really looking forward to seeing the new park and all the activities are going to be booked there in the future, including something here in community itself. Yes. The regular staff have done a wonderful job of putting that together and it is just a marvelous park, Discovery Park, Skunakreek, Discovery Park, and it's just aptly named as it should be. Yeah, perfect. One of the other activities taking place during the Community Day celebration is a great Oregon Coastal Rage Sale and that kicks off April 17, 18, 19. You need to pre-register to become part of it up at the Lincoln City Chamber Commerce Office. We continually push that because if you're going to have a garage sale and want to take advantage of some great promotion and have lots of people at your door, that's the place to go. That's the ticket. Anything else you said at the table? Yeah, you know, one thing I noticed came through is the Oregon State Parks is recognizing

27:02that the Western Snowy Clover season is now. It doesn't really affect our county as far as closures go, but certainly birds like to be birds. They may fly into the county. But the Western and Snowy Clover up north and down south of the Lane County, there's some closures and it just really is trying to protect these dangerous animals, these threatened species. Looking up for that and take care of yourself and your family on the beaches. And if you do see a baby seal, leave the baby seal alone, you don't need to try to help it along. No, it's a natural process, the mom is actually putting her on the shore, the young one on the shore so mom can go feed and, you know, that's their beach too. So yeah, get away and share the space. The nature of the space is certainly true. So that'll do to the dunes on a double-large show.
