明治天皇（めいじてんのう、嘉永5年9月22日（1852年11月3日）- 明治45年(1912年）7月30日）は日本の第122代天皇。諱は睦仁（むつひと）。 倒幕・攘夷派の象徴として近代日本の指導者と仰がれる。功績・人物像から明治大と呼ばれる。
明治天皇は君主として生きた。昭和天皇は君主と象徴の人生を生きた。現在の天皇は象徴の役割を果たしてきた。天皇の生前退位の問題がクローズアップされているが、「天皇とは誰か」「象徴とは何か」は日本人が誰もが考えなくてはならないテーマだ。
