民國47年7月，在823砲戰之前的一個月，空軍一大隊的任祖謀中尉就在汕頭外海南澳島附近海域上空，被中共空軍的米格17戰機偷襲而為國犧牲。政府在當時並未將他的故事對國人報導，因此絕大多數的國人並不知道這個故事。
