Locals in the coastal town of Mitsameoli heard cries for help late Wednesday and called police, leading to the discovery. Here Minister Muhammad Ahamada confirmed eight deaths, but a hospital director warned the toll might hit 17. Survivors told rescuers they were from the Democratic Republic of Congo, though police are verifying that. Many risked this perilous searow for Mayat's French welfare benefits, despite it being France's poorest overseas area. Search and rescue teams kept working Thursday per the civil security directorate as they hunt for more survivors or victims. This year alone, at least 25 people died near Mayat, when traffickers capsized another boat and the UN Migration Agency notes thousands, have perished on these crossings over the
