空海（くうかい、宝亀5年（774年） – 承和2年3月21日（835年4月22日））は、平安時代初期の僧。弘法大師（こうぼうだいし）の諡号（921年、醍醐天皇による）で知られる真言宗の開祖である。
司馬遼太郎の『空海の風景』、高村薫の『空海』を読んでも、空海は大きくて何か漠としている。空海の人間像はなかなか鮮明な像を結ばない。「物の興廃は必ず人に由る。人の昇沈は定めて道に在り」とは、人間としての正しい道を歩む人は浮かぶ。そういった人が集団を栄えさせる。そういうようにまずは理解しておこう。高野山を一度訪ずれなければならない。
