49ers' Edge Rusher Need: Top Offseason Priority

About this episode

The San Francisco Forty Niners bolstered their roster with Mike Evans and Osa Odighizuwa, but their top priority remains addressing the glaring weakness at edge rusher. The teams pass rush struggled in 2025, totaling just 20 sacks, with no one topping 4.5. Injuries to Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams, along with Bryce Huffs retirement, have left the position thin. The Forty Niners need more depth and talent at edge rusher to improve their defense heading into the 2026 offseason.

They signed wide receiver Mike Evans to a team friendly one-year deal and traded for defensive lineman Osa Odi Hizua from the Dallas Cowboys. These moves plug holes at wide receiver and inside the defensive line. Still, the biggest gap remains at edge rusher. ESPN reporter Nick Wagner calls it the team's top priority after a rough 2025 season. The past rushed struggle badly, totaling just 26 for the whole defense. That number looks even worse when you compare to Cleveland Brown star Miles Garrett, who got 23 sacks all by himself. The 49ers' edge rusher combined for only 12 and a half of those 20, with no one topping 4. Nick Bosa and Mikel Williams both tore their ACLs and are coming back. Bryce Huff's surprise retirement leaves the spot even thinner, putting pressure on

the group that underperformed last year. Heading into the 20-26 off season, the 49ers know they need more depth and talent here fast. Getting Bosa and Williams' helpy helps, but adding proven edge rusher is key to fixing this weakness. Appreciation to our sponsor for backing this episode.
