About this episode
Are You More Spiritual Than a Medieval Peasant?
In this episode, we sit with The Book of the Craft of Dying to discuss how medieval spiritual warfare was explained in the 1415 text Ars Moriendi. What temptations do Christians experience in the midst of death? How do temptations to desperation, impatience, complacency, and concern about worldly matters seduce Christians? How do we distinguish between divine actions and nefarious powers at work? How many times can Gillespie interrupt and contradict Riley before he goes apoplectic? Are there patterns Christians can look for to recognize when temptations are approaching? Is there anything we can do to avoid temptations? Is being tempted the same as sinning? Why is so much of medieval piety and discipline no longer taught by the churches? This and much, much more on today's episode of the podcast.

Hey everybody, K-Meal of Alchemy, 100,000 welcomes to you today. This is the Bandbook Podcast. We are a proud member of the 1517 Podcast Network. Everything that you need as far as the gospel and everything that goes along with that, that accompanies that, can be found at 1517.corg, classes, books, merchandise. You're going to need a church for a sacrament though. You are going to need a church for a sacrament. I've heard rumors. I've heard rumors online. So not quite everything. It might go viral, but our friends always, as we do, direct you to your local congregation. That's right. Find a pastor. Find a preacher. Find a communion of saints to commune with and do saint things as the word or is sewn,
which is in our reading study, or is sewn actually comes from that medieval poetic form of Oratio or aeration, which is different than Oratio, interestingly enough. So a narration would actually be like, be seaching then. Be seaching. Or a race. Or a race. Or a race. Or a race. So it would be seach, like to say, hey, listen to my words. I'm guessing. Get out there as a warm up. It symbolizes or is sewn or already sewn. It is the name itself flourished in the Middle Ages, and it symbolizes a person of piety and faith. Because prayer was the center of most people's life in the medieval era. I think it still is. It's just the nature of the prayer has changed. Our prayers are more like the short form. Well, that was fortunate. Yeah. It's a very short prayer, but it is a prayer of a sort. By the Industrial Revolution and the Modernization of Society, there was a shift away from
orison or orison as a name. It was actually a common name for people in the Middle Ages too, orison or orison. And then by the end of the industrial age, it had kind of dropped out of popularity and just dropped out of the lexicon. And it's not as prevalent as it was during the medieval time. It is used still in some places, but otherwise, yeah, interesting. Okay. So we have names like orison, sweat, marden, an American inspirational author and proponent of the new thought movement known for his works on personal development and success. Spud us out for our listeners. O-R-I-S-O-N. I've never heard of anybody named this. Orison or orison or orison. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nearavai. This is new to me. It's great, but it means unlike a casual prayer, it means a weight and it carries with it
the sense of prayer as a beautiful act or a weighty act of localized plea. All right. Save it for a grandchild, maybe. Yeah. I mean, it stems from Orozio. Right. To pray. Yeah. Oh, by the way, oreration comes from the same root Orozio, meaning discourse. Mm-hmm. Right. So prayer is a discourse. With who? Oh, yes. Well, it depends on what direction you're looking. I guess. Yes, that's right. Lord, I believe helped my unbelief. Uh-huh. So you want to introduce the reading today? I do. Well, you had a question. You thought we should do some spiritual warfare work. We haven't done. Mm-hmm. Well, we've done some. But in the past, we had the, um, uh, the one book. It's actually says spiritual warfare right on the title. That was by remind me to title, uh, the author, because I can't remember. See that one more time. I was thinking about it. Who did we read? Who did we read on spiritual warfare? Oh. A lot of different people on the shelf. Um, but we read, uh, how about T-licky on temptation? That's right. Yep.
That was 426. Um, we had seraphim roes. Yeah. That's right. Seraphim roes. Yeah. Yeah. So that's all kind of the spiritual realm. Ristow. Ristow. That's the author. Yeah. I can't remember what episode that was. Here's a new book that came out this spring that I stopped to purchase. That's. Yeah. Is he back in Canada? I think he got deported. Did he? Unfortunately. Maybe. Yeah. Yeah. He had to lead. He was part of that. A church in for us. A church in for us. A church in for us. A church in for us. A church in for us. A church in for us. A church in for us. We're not allowed. So spiritual warfare, and you said we could do something spicy. And that would be a medieval, which means it's probably going to be hit or miss. Because what would you say characteristic of medieval kind of spiritual writing is? It's God that. We were a bird of kit. Well, God does some of it, right? No, I wouldn't say that actually. If we look at, like, let's go with St John the cross is you meet God in the silence
and in the darkness. Okay. And this morning, actually, I was meditating on this is what we forget or we kind of gloss over in Exodus at Sinai is that when Moses goes up the mountain, we assume that it was bright and fiery and volcanic, like mountain doom or something. But God actually calls Moses to walk into darkness. It says he goes into Mount Sinai. Yeah. He goes into it into the darkness. So he goes, it's a cave. Fine. Whatever. But he goes, he's called into the darkness. And then in the darkness when Moses says, show me, show yourself, right? Which makes a little more sense kind of logically than of like, I'm sitting in the dark talking with a disembodied voice. Who are you? Right? So for someone like St John the cross or Bernad Clarevo, Hilda Gardvon Bingon, these are people who, so on a roll up kind of later in the 1400s. Which we've had on the show. Yeah. It is in or is the poet says when people, when you're, find yourself alone and there's
no one around you, it's because God has pushed them away so that you can be alone with him. And that's a very medieval view of, there's a time when you're surrounded by community. You're right. And God serves you through others. But there's going to be a time when God says, I need you to be alone with me. And we talked about this on the last episode where I talked about Mary Oliver, the poet sitting as a practice, she would sit alone every morning and go for walks every morning and just admire things, admire her garden. So she wasn't turning inwards, she was turning outward. And there's a, there's a modern misunderstanding. And especially after the existential movement and people like Kierkegaard and others popularize this, even Kant, ritual, bower, is mysticism is a turning inward. Whereas if you read the medieval mystics, it's a turning outward actually because you're going into the darkness to deprive yourself of your five senses. So that you can direct your attention outward toward the divine. And it's an understanding that there are spirits around us, there are angels around us,
there are wicked angels around us, the Holy Spirit is traveling in a circle around us, our soul moves in circles around us. Everything is in and around you. And to separate yourself out from the noise and the distractions and the temptations. Right. You go somewhere and you go into darkness to deprive yourself of sensory influences so that you can say, okay, Lord, I was reading this yesterday. I mean, there's, there's monsters in the dark, right? Well, there's monsters too, but God is, it's God. And because I was reading this yesterday too of read one, like read scripture until a sentence catches you. One verse of scripture catches you. Take that verse and now walk away with it. Pray that verse, sing that verse, say it out loud, recite that verse. It's like that. Like, okay, this has caught my attention. I'm being held captive by this verse or it's, it's courting me. Let's say. I like the direction you go because I think probably for most people, the only thought they
have of spiritual interaction with the spiritual at all, and not just warfare, but just in a broad sense is in a sense of possession. Right. So, only when it's internal to you. So I have my demons, right? That's what, that's the language we say. Yeah. Right. Or he's struggling. Well, it's a union sense of demons, not actual. Right, but they're always being possessed by them. We have the roses. Yeah. Not that they surround you and that they're influencing you and it's just. We also forget that medieval people had a profound understanding of sin and death. Yeah, that's true. And the evil one and the world as the world. So what they understood and Dr. Luther is a medieval, he comes out of this. So he writes about it. I was going to get there. It is this. When you go inside, you're only going to find ghosts. You're only going to find the old Adam's fleshiness. You're going to find the novice, the hungry soul, the selfish soul, the greedy soul. So it's not as if they were these neanderthals or savages. They were much more dialed in and much more connected to the whole picture than we are.
Because as you noted, we want to psychologist everything and rationalize and explain away the reality of angels, fallen angels, the evil one, the worldliness of the world. But as you said, like you can look and somebody on trial in their eyes and you can, you can tell. Right. Yeah. Right. But we've set that aside. We've said, well, you know, well, she looks dead inside and it's just like a, like she says she is. You made a deal. Right. Right. It's more than just mythology. Right. The demons in her threw her off of a, out of her window. You're right. Incredibly. Yeah. So as an example, I always use is the story of St. Bridget and the blind woman. I think I told the story at least twice on the show, which is St. Bridget encounters this blind, this young blind maiden and she's the, she talks with her and this is a woman of faith, this maiden is a person of faith and piety or a son. So St. Bridget says, do you think I can pray for you?
Forg she says, I, I would like my side back. I would like to be able to see. I've been blind since birth and St. Bridget prays and lays hands on her and anoints her and she gets her side back. And then two weeks later, the woman comes back and beg St. Bridget to pray that God would give her blindness again. Why? Because I can't hear God anymore because I'm distracted by the sights and everything that's flooding my senses now. And so when I stare at a tree, I don't, I don't hear God, you know, telling me I made this tree to glorify myself or to glorify paradise or to give you a print, a print, a print of eternity, all I see is a tree. And I see the leaves changing colors and I'm distracted by an all of a sudden I realize I'm not listening to God anymore. And so I, please give me my, give me my blindness back. That's not an existential crisis. That's not a woman saying, yeah, I'd rather be alone with myself to communicate with myself and commune inside myself. That's a woman who's saying outside of myself. What is outside of me? He's a person. He has a personality. The world outside of me is distracting me from listening for the presence of the Almighty
for my Savior. I can't hear the Holy Spirit come because there's all these birds flying around that I'm distracted by. And so, and Luther himself says that famously. If you want to see the gospel, if you want to see Christ, pluck out your eyeballs and shove them into your ears because faith comes through hearing not by sight and hope that a scene is not hope. So all of these medieval stories are just there. And what we do then, we were talking about this before we hit record is we turn them into these existential exercises in self reflection. We therapist them. We pull them into ourselves because we have this Cartesian worldview that says the entire universe revolves around what I think and what I feel. And we objectify it and then we consume it because we have to consume everything because that's what the old Adam does. He consumes. And we just do violence. So rather than stand under these things and ask, are you telling me what I already believe
or are you telling me something that contradicts that? We stand over things. And we say, I'm demand understanding. I demand that you make sense. We stand over it in judgment. Yeah. And I think that's especially true with, oh, I don't know something. A devotional writing from a medieval period, right? I'm going to look at where it's like, well, they're just, you know, it's kind of like backwards thinking or, you know, they, they're overly spiritual. They don't understand the biochemical or something like that. Right. Which are symptoms of the actual thing. It's like Pedro says, neuroscience can explain what prayer does biochemically, but it hasn't explained what prayer is. It's explained what neuroscience is. They're, yeah. You're just proving why you exist at that point. You're not proving anything outside of that. Right. And also you're subjecting God to the limits of your own intellect, which is the ultimate hubris. So I Jesus says, right, the, the violent want to take heaven by force. And what ends up happening then is we can't simply just sit and be taught.
We can't stand under something and submit to it. God forbid. And as you noted, then if I say in a sermon, for example, that we are influenced and tempted by evil spirits and demons and the powers of darkness and the evil one, they will translate that as, oh, he's talking about a neuroses like anxiety. Oh, we just immediately. Yeah. Right. Immediately. We just have a new name for it now. Right. Oh, yeah, what did they call that code switching code switching? Code switching there. We were not channel switching code switching versus when I say I actually believe this, they then think that I'm trying to manipulate them and exploit them by saying things that are clearly not true. They're bonkers. There's absolutely no way you actually believe this is true pastor. Right. Right. Because we know you well enough to know you're not psychotic. You're not having a, you're not involved in some sort of like psychosis or neuro, neuropsychological break. Well, then you have to do the same thing when you're reading the scripture. Yeah. Is I've never thought of in terms of code switching, but that's what it ends up being. Yeah. It's like, well, they called it, they called it, um, demon possession, but we just call
it, um, whatever, something else. Well, the most popular, current example would be Jordan Peterson's lectures that we've referenced on Genesis and Exodus. Oh, right. Where he quite literally stands on stage and turns everything into a metaphor for psychology, a union metaphor, not even good metaphors. Yeah, he just psychology is so Moses on the mountain in the darkness with God is a metaphor. It's actually an allegory technically because you're saying this is like something else that's real, which is ironic because you have a real historical event that is now being turned into a psycho. It doesn't actually matter whether it happened that as well, right? What's that? Because the point of the story, right? Well, it's just the point. It's a Peterson. It doesn't matter if it happened historically. It's an archetype. And the other type that gives meaning and purpose to people to your psychology, to your neuroses, to your feelings. And so what's the story? Well, you got to go off on your own and you got to have a gratitude journal and you got
to reflect on your choices. It's like you've called taking the calling it and I like it as it flat. It's flattening. Yeah, you're just flattening everything. It's like looking up for you. It's like a horizontal. And then it's God within it's enthusiasm. It's God within ism. That is true. Right. Elijah doesn't emerge from the cave to talk to God. He's like Plato. He emerges from the cave because he's seen the shadow. Oh, it's the same story. And called, yeah, it is for a modern, it's like for a modern union. Elijah and the cave is Plato. Well, you want to transition then, I think. It's a good place to transition. Is that the art of dying, our Smory Indy, we're going to look at it. It's all about fast food and Netflix. No, no, no. Before we get into it, I mean, I want to be critical. We don't have an art of dying now. We just give him more theme. Like I just talked about this there. You don't, people, you might have somebody say come and do last rights, but what they last rights, they don't mean. I want my, I want my loved one here that I'm with to be driven.
I want them to have their sins forgiven. Yeah. No, which is part of the art of dying is that you die with a, with a, with a clean conscience knowing that you've heard the word of forgiveness from Christ himself through the day or last Sunday, actually, I was talking with one of my beloved members and her husband's in the hospital slash, I think hospice care actually. He's in transitional care. Sure. I asked if he had his priest because he's Roman Catholic and she's Lutheran and I asked is this just you have a priest that's visited him and she said no, but the kids are coming and I said, well, if you want me to visit him, I'm glad to visit and give him a lot of that. I mean, friends and family visiting is part of that art of dying for us today. Doesn't really help. No, no, they're not, they're not bringing any word, they're not bringing an internal word. They're bringing again a flat word. Right. It does nothing. Luther actually has a work, it's called sermon for, like before, or to prepare for dying. Yeah, 15, 19, 15, 19. Yeah.
And it's, you know, it's really Luther, whatever you care if you have matters to you. But the idea, like you just said, it's an external word you need to hear. And it could be from, it doesn't have to necessarily be from a pastor. But like there's probably, you probably have things that you want to get off your past. That you need to, right? For the sake of the project. But I bring it up because you said I don't need to because he probably wouldn't even know that I'm there. Oh, yeah. To your point, right? Well, yeah, he's doped up probably. Yeah. Well, he's on a lot of medications because he's 96 years old. He's in a lot of pain, et cetera, et cetera. And you've noted this before is we're not allowed to experience pain passing through the gate. Right. But I mean, the question that this work's going to ask, just introduce it a little bit, because when you're dying, are you still faced with unbelief? More than any other time. Yeah, despair. It also depends on how broadly you want to define dying. Right. Inpatients. Do you just want to define it physically?
Right. No. Or do you want to define it spiritually? Well, I do want to define it vocationally. Yeah. And if you want to go stowa, I mean, we're always prepared to die. Right. Well, I was going to say I'm always dying. Well, that's true, too. I'm always being put to death. Mm-hmm. Yeah. My daily grind is to not die today, whereas it seems that God has held pants on making sure I die today. And so there's, and you know, and everyone knows this from experience, there are going to be days when you're saying could it not hurt so much? Or like Fleiter of Conor famously said in a Good Man's Heart to Find she could be a martyr that she was killed every second of her life. Mm-hmm. But it is God saying, you know, how about you get right with me? Yeah, right and it you know so dying and rising is confessing and being absolves good teacher What must I do to inherit eternal life right that's that's the art of dying question right there? Mm-hmm and Jesus does Well also by the way the Medievals were taught
Choose your death. It was very very popular. What do you mean? Like you's your adventures? No, no like literally you need to choose your death You need to choose how are you going to die because the purpose this is all the stories the medieval stories like Percival and and Galahad and and going and so on is How are you gonna die? Are you gonna die in service so Lord to glorify the Father? In a quest for the grail for example, you're glorifying God or are you gonna die in such a way that it's pitiful And it is not to the glory of God watching TV with the beer in the hand What's that watching TV with the beer in your hand? Yeah, that would be the opposite of choosing your death You're letting others I think a lot of people would just love that kind of Just super passive you know Hmm And so we don't we don't think that way because we're not taught that way Whereas in the middle ages this was implicit you had to teach this because every story every Fable for example not even stories fables were all how to die and be reborn every single one
Some of them were dying to greed or dying to gluttony right the seven deadly sins and others were how do I die to Christ? Right so children were raised with this ethos pagan children were raised with this ethos like we've talked about it's not and not in a morbid way No and like positively right like this is this is the I'm gonna die on my feet standing on my two feet Right in the field maybe or giving birth or For the poor bit. Yeah, but it's it's understanding that and this is the the thing that we avoid because we hate this is the W.Y.R.D. Weirdness of Christianity is You are made to become someone specific and I talked about this last week. Yeah, therapeutic is you can become anyone you want Which is why Modern's hate old stories they hate the gospels because the gospels are literally I choose you and You were made to become not an adulterous you were made not to become a prostitute you were made not to be born blind
You were made not to become a leper. So I need to restore you to what I chose you to be and now go and Go home by the way Go home and serve your family go home and make dinner go home and Get ready to say hello to everybody tomorrow that hasn't seen you in you know years Whatever it might be so in the middle ages everybody was taught even pagans know this This is what's the wild we're worse than heathens and in modernity because we don't believe this But the pagans knew this the norans the fates you were made for a purpose and the reason you suffer and die Is because you are fighting against either actively or passively not becoming who you were created to be So if you were created to be a knight, but you're like no, I want to be a dancer You know you're gonna suffer your entire life You're in a suffer because you're fighting against the will of God who made you to be a knight. Well, and how would you determine that?
Mm-hmm, right? I mean that's part of this art is Where am I being tempted right to to walk away from the path that has been set before me? That would be one one kind of And also by the way you go into the world so to speak you go into the wilderness you go into the forest to find genius This is the point of going on an adventure going on a quest going on a pilgrimage You go into the wilderness the wild lawless place to find genius and then you bring that wisdom back to the village so that it benefits We have the opposite now, right? The whole purpose of life is to get away from the village become a genius whatever that means and and then You start a new family out there somewhere and you start a new life out there somewhere and you become it's the Horatio Alger story. It's the literal fundament of American culture In the West and South and yeah, go west and reinvent yourself. Yeah, so we have a modern story that says reinvent yourself Be self-made pull yourself up by your bootstrap being individual
Versus the medievals be a part of the village contribute to the village the whole story of the half girl or the halfboy coming out of Borneo And ancient story of your born half a person You have to wander the world to find the other half of yourself You can come back to the village and we can all dance we can all sing we can all be whole again So if the girl is half a person the village is half of a village is half of a whole that is we're out of community We're out of unity right so the entire purpose of the medieval Culture is be a unity the entire purpose of modern the modern West is being individual Which for the middle evil people would have been hell In hell you are alone in hell you are individual person and Yet the psalmist says I descend into the abyss I go into the darkness and who do I meet there God? Which is why Dante when he descends in the divine comedy there's this whole Subtext going on that he's aware of because he's an early medieval. Yeah, and it is we have to descend to go up
We have to descend into hell to get up because the gate to heaven is through the devil. It's under his cloaca and Today we don't believe any of that. No. So therefore when we read John of the cross We read Bernhard Klarevo we read Hill guard we read beat even who's more orthodox and that sense less mystical We are only just assumed they think like we do They think so completely different. This is why when we were talking earlier to cover last week in this week When I tell people and I'm being more vocal about this that the purpose of reading the scriptures is not to understand them This is why there's threefold and fourfold exegesis in early medieval Reading and commenting on scriptures. Yeah, but we rationalize that even right because we don't stand under scripture We overstand it and we say no, it's this or it's nothing Yeah, so then people don't read the Bible because they read it and go I don't understand this It's like yeah, you don't because one it happened five thousand years ago to They're different than you are they think different they act different and yet the human heart hasn't changed since the big since the fall
and Third, do you really think the Holy Spirit paints and with a singular line? Jesus can't be drawn with a single line now he's a stained glass window and The Holy Spirit's always moving and living and active and convicting and yet The whole purpose of reading the scriptures is like I said you read until you're caught by it It's a living word and then that one verse carries you for years sometimes and you sing it you pray it you sit with it It's just it's always there you're with the saints. Yeah, so in a in a meta-narrative It's not that I'm just reading Jonah It's the fact that Jonah is with Christ in the resurrection currently and therefore he is literally a house guest Because when I pray angels are angels in the whole company of heaven all the saints are praying with me Which is Jonah right so it's not that I'm having a metaphorical or allegorical experience of Jonah I believe based on what scripture says that Jonah is present to me because Jesus is present and Wherever Jesus goes he takes all of heaven with him. Yeah, living stones built together right, mm-hmm. We don't believe that anymore
So I read you into the deep people yeah, we're just individuated So that means that in especially in our church body where we do confess that every word of scripture is inspired by the Holy Spirit It is the word of God not words about God, but words from God himself their words of God That means that you actually don't even believe the confession of our church body At that point you literally don't believe that the words of the Bible are true They're true to the extent that they appeal to you intellectually emotionally Knowledge-wise, but they don't actually do anything without you and by the way this comes from the enlightenment teaching that the universe is dead The woods are a dead thing you have to take care of the earth because it's a dead thing Your relationships are just dead things until you put effort and work into them Everything's a dead thing until you do something You you you you you right if you're gonna be a human being you got to be a verb you got to be verbing all the time The medievals this is the point though if I'm verbing all the time that means Jesus isn't burbing
He's not doing nothing. He's not doing anything He's just sitting up on his rainbow bridge and by the late Middle Ages you're getting that yeah, you see Luther's criticism is more active Yeah, yeah, he's just out there at a distance where much more active right? Yeah, cuz he's waiting for you to do stuff and he's either gonna cut you down And then this is 1415 I mean eventually we're gonna read it this 1415 and I think you're gonna hear both You're gonna hear some Indication of human activity, you know to to make things right, but we'll see we'll see go for it all right So this is chapter two of This arse my rendue book this is actually from a larger compendium. I should have said this I should say this before we get too far along. It's called what was it called? I just lost it the Bam books, bam books, bam books, I got my notes here. Okay, here we go It's from Francis Compers the book of the craft of dying 1917 I mean, he does some new translations to make it a little bit more
intelligible in English so still old English though right a hundred years ago And has plenty of Latin to go around as well. All right. I'm gonna share it on the screen I haven't done this for there we go. We can do that so they you can try to read along with me Second chapter is of men's temptations that die No all men doubtless that men that die in their last sickness and end have greatest and most grievous temptations and such as they never had before in all their life and Of these temptations five be most principle The first is of the faith for as much as faith is Fundament of all men's souls heal. Oh, I like that word souls heal Witnessing the apostle that sayeth I'm not gonna read the Latin Other fundament may no man put and therefore Saint Austin sayeth Faith is fundament of all goodness and beginning of man's heal and therefore sayeth St. Paul It is impossible to please God without faith and St. Austin sayeth. We like St. Austin here a lot
He that believeth now is not deemed and for as much as there is such and so great strength in in the faith That with Thuton it there may know may hand be saved. This is modern English. I love it I said at the beginning of the book right So without faith you cannot be saved we agree Therefore the devil with all his might is busy to avert fully a man from the faith in his last end Or if he may not that he laboreth bizzily to make his doubt therein or somewhat draw him out of the way or deceive him with some manner of superstitious and false errors or Heresies But every good Christian man is bound namely habitually though he may not actually and intellectually apprehend them to believe and full faith and credence give not only to the principal articles of the faith But but also to all holy writ and all manner things and fully to obey the statutes of the Church of Rome
Oh and we can disagree with that part and Stabely to abide and die in them for as soon as he begins to air or doubt in any of them all as soon as he goeth out of the way of life and his soul's heal But wit thou well without doubt that in this temptation and in all other that follow after the devil may not know the Instead of an annoy I like annoy the nor prevail against no man in no wise as long as he Half use of his free will oh boy and of reason well disposed But if he will willfully consent unto his temptation. All right, so we can kind of get a sense of the um This is definitely medieval Roman you know teaching yeah because we have the Church of Rome mentioned right fundamental um now so my question is I don't actually disagree that We're tempted in death I'm tempted to unbelief. I mean you leave yeah well, but but I'm even thinking at the deathbed. I'm
Focus narrowly on that of course. Well, we say of course, but a lot of times We're not allowed to have those conversations. I mean because you'll have a loved one sitting where they're and they get uncomfortable I'd like no you just doped out of your mind or they're doped out of their mind right if they're in the Oh no, I mean everybody in the room is doped out of their mind on some sort of medication I suppose nowadays I suppose the average American has four prescription medications. There was a A video that went around on social It was at a gathering and was a bunch of women. It was a family And the only one the only one who wasn't on some medication they put the medications up on the screen They come to gram on it says raw dogging it since 1935 You know she's the only one not medicated. That's really a sad state of affairs I think I think I meant to be um kind of an indictment of a sort But it means we can't actually Because you they need to hear from you. Yeah You're baptized Your child of God God loves you
Having awaits you. He's got you in his care all the different ways you could say it And that we do say it and yet they're not allowed to say I'm not sure You're like well, why not? Because they're because that is It's different maybe 1415 medieval Roman church then especially post-looser for us is to say well lord I believe helped my unbelief like we can hold that simile Of I'm both simultaneously center in a saint. I'm believing well I just so happen to have something from large catechism sitting right in front of me Go for it. Luther writes this to feel temptation is therefore a far different thing from consenting or yielding to it We must all feel it although not all in the same manner But some in a greater degree and more severely than others right as the young suffer especially from the flesh Afterwards they that attained to middle life and old age from the world But others who are occupied with spiritual matters that is strong Christians they suffer from the devil
But such feeling as long as it is against our will and we would rather be rid of it Can harm no one For if we did not feel it It could not be called the temptation But to consent there too is when we give it the reins and do not resist or pray against it Sounds like Luther read the same thing that we're reading it. Yeah, yeah, he's about that It's echoing the same the same kind of language and we could talk about the will and how much Authority they give to the human will to the free will right but in in the sense of and I just think about this last week to avoid the dawn treader this comes up because I talked about the dragon all the time and Love that picture. He had turned used this. This is transformation uses this transformation He had turned into a dragon while he was asleep Sleeping on a dragon's hoard with greedy dragonish thoughts in his heart He had become a dragon himself I like that because to what you just read and what you just said then This is the understanding of the story is again Tasha logum Tasha logum what you focus on what are you looking at?
Because what you focus on most you eventually become if you focus on death as the the final period on in the book of life You are tempted to renounce Jesus as the big-dead death of little d death And so rather than focus on Jesus in the cross and the resurrection and the comfort of knowing that it this is a pet This is just the gate to into eternal life. Right. Instead. This is it. This is the final straw and As Luther himself writes about and the medieval practice of the death mask is a part of this At the end of your life, you're going to be tempted by spirits Because they believed unlike us the prince of the power of the air that the demons inhabit the air the atmosphere And your soul must pass through these rebel angels on its way to heaven Which is why you need angels to guard your soul as it passes through And you see images then and paintings of demon's spearing spirits as they leave the body and dragging them to hell And you never want to die screaming. That's not a good death mask
This is why Luther had a death mask because they had to prove that he wasn't he didn't die screaming Because of course everybody his enemies were saying He's a demon. He's the anti-Christ. He's a false prophet. What did it when did they make the oh they make the mask after the death? Yeah, immediately right after like yeah Where did we see that is it stored somewhere? Well, they had one at Luther's seminary outside the library a copy of it Yeah, yeah, yeah with his hands. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's right. They do the hands too. Mm-hmm. Yeah, mm-hmm So without faith and so the necessity of faith the face death I like this we become what we covet That is what our heart at coveting is emotional. It's your heart attaching itself to something right? Mm-hmm So Eve's heart attached itself the woman's heart attached itself to the fruit rather than to God And Eve attached herself her heart to the fruit rather than to Adam right there's no help or suitable for you flesh my flesh bone on my bone So in Genesis two
Flesh is a good thing right After Genesis three flesh is a bad thing Because the heart the fleshy heart attaches itself to things literally it attaches itself to something Almost paracetically in a sense right it feeds off of it and The more it feeds off of that thing the more it needs it the more it wants to consume from it and So if you sleep on a a dragon's hoard of gold Your heart will feed off of that gold until it becomes reptilian and it will become draconian and eventually you'll just become Fafnir the dragon you'll become smoug yeah, yeah, if you attach your heart to your neighbor's property or wealth or family or job you eventually become that You become disfigured you become twisted up and as you noted earlier when we were talking The afflictions of the soul manifest themselves physically Not only just in in the human But in creation itself look at Eastern Europe in the late 80s under the Soviet Union
Everything is great even the sky is gray all the time There's nothing sunny about it Then the clothing is gray the cars are gray everything's made out of poor cement connection to Philadelphia Anyway, no Washington DC actually. Oh, yeah the most shadowy dark whole place You can possibly tend in the middle of the summer too So it's spiritual affliction is real spiritual attacks are real at least according to our author that we're reading and Dr. Luther and see us Lewis right But I think this is the again the Cartesian worldview in the postmodern worldview that there is no such thing as objective truth or objective reality Because everything is subjective morality is subjective the world is subjective everything is just about me myself and I and how it affects me and makes me feel and what I think To the extent that we're in a place now where you can kill your children and not immediately be put in jail Or immediately put in a mental hospital for the rest of your life that used to like I think it's Margaret Atwater wrote a book called alias grace which was about the first female serial killer in America based on that case
They couldn't convicted because at the time they didn't believe women could be serial killers And she was clearly a serial killer, but they couldn't convict her Because the logic was well she can't be because that's that's a masculine demon. Yeah, sort. Yes So all the evidence was presented she admitted to killing Several people, but the jury made of men said, but that's impossible Well, well see that that doesn't seem contemporary at all No, and this was at the turn of the century that this case happened. Yeah, so what happens is We just find as the proverbist actually says this Sunday The proverbist talks about wisdom and those who reject wisdom are wicked and they chase after wickedness the last sundays reading from Jeremiah They're like a war horse charging into battle So when you aren't resisting temptation when you aren't saying oh, I'm being tempted. I mean tested Therefore who is testing me? Is it God? Well, no God doesn't test. He's not an author of sin Well, some things testing me because I don't want this
but I am depressed or I am angry or I am anxious or Again, we reduce all this to emotional versus What's happening around me? What's happening socially? What's happening within my home or my community or my neighborhood? What's happening to me sure, but it's from the outside in not from the inside out So what we end up doing is internalizing these things and then we pass them off as neuroses because But that is that's letting the demon in then yes, you're opening the door to the demon So dangerous and why when Christians tell me he's not that bad I'm like you have no idea what you're saying you're internalizing he literally says welcome the darkness into yourself And make friends with yeah do shadow work right? Yeah, the shadow work is these are real creatures This isn't your interacting with yeah, these aren't archetypes These aren't allegories these are real creatures these are real things And they're knocking and you're saying come on in fake thing Well, and this is the problem with not all psychology, but most of it to apply this practically
This is the people that go to Yellowstone and want to have their picture taken with buffalo And then they get gourd by the buffalo I feel seen here. I didn't get gourd And was yelling at me for getting too close It's a wild animal Yes Was there a video that went viral not that long ago, but it always tourists got gourd by some Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna went through the campground. Yeah Same thing. Oh, yeah You don't there's a there's reality and then there's you yeah, it's more than arms length. Please so that's a temptation Yeah, to actually Aberus I think in that sense That you're just like you're so vain. You're so proud and arrogant. You're so much humor. So you're like it'll be fine Oh, well, that is the Fourth of the five temptations, right? I don't know if we'll get to it today, but oh by the way I brought this up a Bible class Wednesday. I said so what's the purpose of education historically? Right you know the answer in documentation virtue and sorry. I said I said education historically
Not modern education. It just came out of my mouth I don't know what I knew and I said so the purpose of of education since time immemorial has always been the inculcation of virtue Because that kind of makes good families good societies can't make everything good So the middle ages virtues became theological virtues So if you read about Christian nights and the chivalric way it's all virtues No, bless oblige is based on virtue The even Paul himself in his writings takes up Greek virtues and theologians and says hey These virtues are actually good right? You just don't understand these are fruits of the Holy Spirit Well, then that's was chapter five and we should mention here arsamer any the art of dying in a predates The christian scripture. Yeah This is I mean well death has been our companion for a very long time. We'd be epic at Gilgamesh It's in Gilgamesh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's in the oldest stories Maybe it's articulated different by different traditions obviously here as Christian but I don't know like I said we were talking about this off area again is
Like the Sabbath well if pagan religions have a Sabbath Practice that also Christians and and Judaism has This is really far upstream from religion. This is reality The Sabbath is reality It's not some practice we adopted from somebody else or somebody just like hey We should really treat one day of the week as special because we don't like working all the time No, but the Sabbath is up like it's of it's Genesis one stuff This is before anybody's even made The Sabbath exists so Even if you don't know the living God It's woven into the fabric of reality So therefore when you worship false gods You worship demons The demons are gonna get you to observe a Sabbath rest Because they're aping God the demons themselves are still angels They can't escape reality. They have to have a Sabbath against their will and
Because we're not grounded in this this again biblical cosmology and biblical definitions of reality We reject all of this and yet Every group has a Sabbath rest Yeah non religious groups have Sabbath They have feast days well and ever in any case we have holy days we all rest every day. Yeah, right at night Mm-hmm right west sleep. So We had a year of jubilee by the way against our wills. I heard somebody advocate that I want to play twenty to solve the debt problem. Yeah, everybody was locked down Yeah, remember the dolphins came back to Venice and no, I don't remember that Yeah, it was a big deal like nature With found away and the yeah, the dolphins were swimming through the canals and Venice blah blah blah and the water was clear. The dolphins came back to Venice. Yeah, they were swimming around in the canals Okay, yeah, I miss that that was a year of hey, let's let the field life all over Well, yeah, maybe not for the best of reasons well, that's because it was an un it was an anti-Christ
Thing right, but nonetheless like I it doesn't change what I said Which is reality's reality and you have to participate whether you want to or not right so the temptation is To run this to ground We're gonna have a Sabbath rest. We're gonna have a year of jubilee. We're gonna give out indulgences even stay home socially distance wear a mask and you'll get what? Free french fries free donut. That's right. You'll get a sticker crispy cream. You're a good person. That's an indulgence That's what that's what those are and that's why you call the police on people that aren't being pious We're doing the thing. Yeah, you need the the church theologians the church lawyers to show up and say naughty naughty You're not worshipping God. You're not observing the Sabbath right Which in paganism is death and as you noted It was death early on for it was a collective exercise but it was not Collectively agreed to because by not observing the Sabbath by violating the order of reality You're out of unity again. You're dis united from us. I was thinking about that because it's stuck like a child of Israel
They don't have a choice right. It's what they're born into But this may not the choice they make is always the same choice And so God says fine you you don't want to observe the Sabbath in Judea. We'll take you to Babylon And then you'll be forced to absorb the Sabbath well It's worse because in Exodus you're you're not only cast out you're killed. Yeah Yep. Yeah By the waters of Babylon we sat and we wept Yeah Well, that's actually a mercy compared to the death part. I mean, yeah, I don't know Babylon and mercy. That's hard to say So anyway, okay, so back to where we were we're still with the first temptation of course because that's how we do it here on the show We we give you an entree and then you get to go and dig deeper if you want Follow the link in the show now. All right, so and therefore no very Christian man ought not to dread any of his illusions or his false threatening or his feigned fearings For as Christ himself saith in the gospel the devil is a liar and the father of all leasing
but Manly therefore and stiffly and steadfastly abide and persevere and die in the very faith in unity and obedience of our mother holy church and It is right profitable and good and it is used in some religious When a man is an agony of dying with a hive voice off times to say the creed before him that he that is sick may be mortified in stabilness of the faith and Is that fiends? Yeah, fiends that he may not suffer to hear it may be voided and driven away from him So the creak casts away the fear Because it's the faith you're confessing faith to him right Also to stabilness of the very faith should strengthen a sick man principally the stable faith of our holy fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob Also the perseverance abiding faith of Job of Rahab the one of Rob I guess it's Rahab the woman Is that right? No, it's I don't know who that is our a a b. Who is that?
Mm, anyway, you can look it up and a core and such other and also the faith of the apostles and other martyrs confessors and virgins in Numerable for by faith all They that have been of old time before us and all they be now and shall be hereafter They all please and have pleased and shall please God by faith for as it is a foresaid With with Thuton faith it is impossible to please God So this is something we've been talking about actually quite a bit as of late is the necessity of martyrology Yeah Not only those of the scripture But you could do you can even do Lutheran devines if you want if you want to be very particular to your tradition But to look at you know if we're gathered with saints well you just said a few minutes ago Saints and angels a little whole host of heaven that includes Job But it includes the apostles and martyrs and confesters and the virgins um I think as I said Quentin John Moriarty don't talk about Job pray to be inside
The experiences the Job experiences be inside the valley of the fish be the woman at the well Pray to explain because Jesus shows up there. This is John of the cross again In the darkness you're going to get the God who shows up As the jisconious fish you're going to get the God who shows up in the whirlwind But as uh since my beloved professor would correct me at this point Outside the preaching of Christ in the gospel all you're getting is the hidden God in the law So we also have to be careful that oh When you're talking about just preaching example yeah, yeah, that you sell the gospel short Yeah, well just the experience itself pray to become like Job okay great You need a gospel preacher otherwise you'll end up scraping your source in the dirt Along with Job and having your wife curse you and say die Versus yeah, that's fine that the hounds of hell are barking at your pulpit, but do you have a preacher who can absolve you? Where's Jesus? Blessed are the feet of those who come carrying the gospel right so
If we romanticize these things we're gonna lead people into temptation actually because they're gonna seek these things out as if they're good In the sense of like I'm gonna go have this experience. Oh, well, I mean there is a sense that I'm gonna go to Mexico and drink ayahuasca with some shaman And I'm gonna be enlightened and see elves and then come home and be a cooler part, you know Yeah, I mean there's a sense that we embrace death willingly in Christ show your death right Because I'm just I'm just I'm gonna say that I've run the race I fought the fight yeah, and he did kind of beg to be taken away too. Oh to live as Christ to die as game Yeah, yeah And that's not suicidal Right Well, it's not self murder. Do you actually yeah, yeah, two weeks ago, but you actually get to choose your death anyway I mean doesn't the Lord Choose, you know in a sense of like The Lord gives Lord to show you a picture election Again, if you if going back to what I said about being weird W.I.R.D. Not strange, but as in the sense of like this is who you're made to be so
so My choices have led to sin death on the evil one ruling over me. I open the door to possession. Let's say To be possessed through my addictions and through the choices you make within those the things that are downstream from drug use and It was only by the grace of God that I was led away from those things those things were scattered you're chosen a different Again the light enters into the darkness and the darkness does not apprehend it comprehend it grasp it How do you want to translate that word in Greek? But the point is that the world is darkness because he says like he came to his own and his own did not receive him He says that in the same breath as the light shines in the darkness So the world that Jesus comes into his world is Clothed covered in the the crow's feathers the blackness right the crow's feathers are over the sun Which means he has to and if he is the light Then if I were to go into the cave with Moses I would also with Moses then eventually say hey
If you are the light of all mankind as you confess You're your apostle confesses this yeah, I'm gonna need some I'm gonna need you to show yourself because the devil also appears as an Angel of light right and that I mean that's a good well that's Christian prayer is where you hold God to his promises Right has he promised and if he has you say do what you promise to me because I'm not you know Especially if you're not experiencing it or at least you don't perceive it in the moment Um, I was thinking about this art of dying and I keep I quoted the him a minute ago And I couldn't remember which him it was but it's um to me Are for me to live as Jesus it goes like this and it's really teaching the same thing For me to live as Jesus to die as gain for me Then when so ever he pleases I meet death willingly yeah for Christ my lord and brother I leave this world so damn and gladly seek that other where I shall be with him yeah And I know people hear that and like well that's morbid. It's like well No, it's not no it's only morbid if I said this earlier
It's only more but if you think that it's death and then a period and that's the end of the book Right, I was gonna say that it's annihilation Right yeah that if I don't that this life is the only life I have to live right right My woes are nearly over the long and dark the road my sin his merits cover and I have peace with God So these I mean this would be a great hymn to pray at the bedside or or if you're despairing Or you're prideful and you don't think that death will ever meet you or whatever it is Yeah, um put this in put this in your list of hymns this thing on Sunday, you know Um, if you're preaching Or to pray at home as a prayer All right, so we oh we can get to the second temptation ready I think we can do that put it back up on the screen for viewers um Oh, there's one more paragraph before that also double profit should induce every sick man to be stable in faith One is for faith may do all things as our Lord himself wit witnesseth in the gospel and saith all things are possible to him that believe is steadfastly
Another is for faith geteth a man all things as our Lord saith Whatever it be that ye will pray and ask believe virally that ye shall take it and ye shall have it And though that ye should would say to a hill that He should lift himself up and fall into the sea as the hills of Capsied by prayer and petition of king Alexander the Greek conqueror were closed together. I don't know that last nice reference Hmm. That's nice. I like that king king Alexander pray that the hills be cast into the sea. I guess he did And they were closed All right, so faith faith receives so pray in faith pray for faith pray in the faith pray the creed is which gives faith and well it is the faith Confessed right in so many words. Yeah good. So that's a good one second temptation is desperation It's the caspiancy and the Caucasian mountains. Oh, so there must be some story there Medieval legend told that the people is associated with the ten lost tribes of Israel and in closely related versions of Gog and May
Gog were shut away beyond those mountains Alexander the great prayed for gods help and two mountains moved together sealing the dangerous people behind them Hmm, so the critical edition of cacston's text identifies this specifically as a Jewish addition to the medieval Alexander legends and Traces its circulation through Peter coma stores historias Galastica and the historian de preles tradition Wow, so Christ Faith can say I'm too amount and be taken up a cast in the sea medieval Alexander through prayer mountains themselves come together Great in a similar way. Yeah, okay Well again if he said you could do it medieval with him. No, not reference. Yeah, just by the way, right All right, so the second temptation When we're facing death is desperation The witch is against the hope and confidence that every man should have into God. I like it better if it was Which W IT? W I C H. This is which I put it back up. Yeah, I'll put which is against the hope the which the
Desperation of that the desperation is against the hope For when a sick man is sort tempted and vexed with sorrow and sickness of his body Then the devil is most busy to super add sorrow to sorrow with all the ways that he may think Job here again, right? Objecting his sins against him for to induce him into despair Furthermore as innocent the Pope in his third Book of the wickedness of mankind. I need right to book on the wickedness of mankind Uh, that's sarcasm Every man both good and evil or his soul pass out of his body He's seeeth Christ put on the cross the good man to his consolation the evil man to his confusion To make him ashamed that he's he hath lost the fruit of his redemption Here's a for those in your degree grammar people I lift this up because I was That is restrictive. It's something that's a necessary for the sentence or the paragraph to be formed Which is unrestrictive meaning anything that comes after which does not actually contribute
To the paragraph or sentence that can be taken out or left in and it will change the content Just for the how do we know the difference because I used I thought out a Chicago manual style that is singular and which is multiple things But no that is restrictive meaning anything that comes after that has to be in the sentence or paragraph for a change of sense Okay, which is hey, there's this other stuff you could take it out and still say the same thing Huh That is grammar nerd. Sorry. It's good. It's good. Well, I was just curious why they used it this way to which To which here they're before to therefore Which is against the you like that is a bunch of it makes sense in an order that you just read it out loud and it's like Oh, I understand what you mean. Yeah, yeah, I just don't say it that way All right, so when a sick man is Tim tormented and vexed Sorrow sickness of the body Mm-hmm. Then the devil is busy to super add sorrow upon sorrow upon the early suffering the body And so then bring you a volume of your sins and other things. Yeah, does that hurt because
I mean Yeah, you're never a grumpy about this. I usually grumpy about this. Let's think about this some more. Yep. Yep. How do you feel? Yep, yep Let's see and also the devil bring it again into the man into a man's mind That is in point of death, especially those sins that he hath done And was not driven of to draw him thereby into despair But therefore should no man despair and no wise For though any one man or woman had done as many thefts or manslaughter or as many other sins as be drops of water in the sea and gravel stones in the strand Though he had never done penance for them a for Meaning repentance Nor never had been driven of them before Neither then might have time for sickness or lack of speech or shortness of time to be driven of them Yet should he never despair for in such a case very contrition of heart within
With will to be driven if time suffice is sufficient and accepted by God for to save him ever lessingly Not because I strive out of that guy. Oh, so the devil brought up your sins? Well confess him here's your forgiveness Right, right until until until finally your time has come right there. There's nothing that can't be that is not outside the forgiveness of Christ Which is I mean this is interesting because when people leave church The one thing is they refuse to go through confession absolution. I know I know Not as like you're sinning so don't leave church would rather hey, let's sit down you've accused me of sin And I want to sit down with you hear your accusations Then repent and be absolved And it's like no, I don't want to do that with you Every pastor with any experiences experience has gone through this as experiences. Yeah, and it's like well that's satanic Well because it's not confessed now God willing Maybe facing death or cancer or well, that's the same thing
Yeah, you know something that really kicks you in the gut them and then you're like You know, I mean I don't want to get too personal But I've sat with a lot of people that died with a lot of resentments unresolved correct correct Yeah, yeah, I mean, I think we can speak generally that and and we've seen it We've seen it in some media this is a depicted literature I've sat with people who have died cursing people in their home family And that's something it's like really you're dying right now like they're coming with the more about you And the last thing that you want to be conscious of is I hate my brother Make sure that at the funeral he's not allowed to to speak you're like really that's a confession Mm-hmm. It is a confession. Yes But not seeking to be sure of it. It's a dark one. It's a real dark hopeless confession. Yeah And at the at the heart of it for me is that is Hope is something in the future Is drawing your attention in that direction right hopefully upward right and a lack of hope. I was reading the camera who said it but
There was a social critic thinker That Excuse me obsession with the past and nostalgia is a sign of a society's disintegration downfall because he wrote You're not creating anything because you see no future And when you there's nothing in the future for you to focus on the only thing left to you is to look over your shoulder and say oh man There's so much better back then we need to get back then get recapture that I was reading this this morning as an example It was a joke, but it was You know gen Xers are gonna buy land and then rebuild Towns that look like that late 80s early 90s. So have a blockbuster and a pizza hot and Right of course, I'd be like Epcot center except it's yeah 80s right Well, they're like we need to like form omnis communities of gen Xers, but instead of Turning milk and building barns. We would build a blockbuster and so on and on Kate and People the government would actually love that because we just We just passed us ties ourselves deep just pan. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah, the deep dish with oh, it's just so greasy
The garlic butter sauce the garlic cheese sauce is probably why I can't eat any of that today as we could say so much of it then Yeah, that's fact pole position on the video game console. Oh, let's pull position. I forgot all that point of if This is why we don't see people creating beauty And it's all in there are lots of people that I know creating very beautiful things writing beautiful things saying beautiful things They're not popular because the world hates beauty hates it and you can say oh Dalai part and died and she did beautiful things no not even comparable to the beauty of What other people are doing? Heavenly beauty should be a full voice, but based on what criteria Uh horizontal or vertical beauty Is the beauty that points you towards Eden and the resurrection and sometimes Sometimes exactly. Yeah, I'm trying to think some of the gospel songs she's saying that are really Nobody singing the gospel in his truth and purity is gonna be popular. It'll be interesting at her
Yeah, well, I said at your heart. You heard me think about that for the rest of the day No one that sings the gospel in his truth and purity will be popular At any level Because Jesus says if you preach the gospel you will be persecuted So all you gospel singers of popular as in like majority receives people in the world and in just in general Hmm you will not be seen Yeah, I'm thinking of like Dylan fans. They hate his gospel years It's like I'm glad he moved on for somebody. I know some of those son. Yes, they're cheesy. Yeah, cuz they're late 70s evangelical Christianity Exactly, but uh, yeah, it's not his most popular work Gats evens he moved through the same period at the around the same time. No, didn't he didn't he become a Buddhism or something well, he was a Buddhist. He was a Christian. Then he was a Muslim. Okay, there he moved through a lot of he was into numerology and yeah, he was a searcher. He was a searcher Yeah, where were we when we go back? Let's jump back over screen share there we go
I bring these up by the way not just pulp cultural references, but really as what we're just talking about which is the Temptations that come will come sideways. They will come as an appeal To the softer side of your memory the softer side of your experiences We call this is hardline frontal attacks against the true Christians nostalgia berries against wheat Christians and wheat consciences It's gonna be simple grandma's in heaven looking down on us right now. Yeah, that's the moment. That's not this is this moment. It's a heresy All right, rejects the creed to your point So and Ezekiel saith also in what hour that ever it be that the sinful man is sorry and wording converted from his sins He shall be saved. That's not exactly how he says it, but that's okay And therefore Saint Bernard saith the pity and mercy of God alone is more than any wickedness agreed And Austin this guy apparently really likes Austin Upon John saith we should never despair of no man as long as he is in his bodily life
For there is no sin so great, but it may be healed outtake despair alone. So that's the sin against the Holy Spirit, right? Yeah And saint Austin saith also all sins that a man has done a for may not know nor damn a man But if he be well paid in his heart that he has done them Therefore no man should despair though it were so that it were possible that he alone had done all manner of sins That might be done in the world For by despair a man geteth not else, but that God is much more Offended thereby and all his other sins be more grievous and God's sight and everlasting pain thereby increased infinitely to him that so disparate so the way to the spares man manifest today is to say well God can't forgive that And it's usually it's usually little things. I mean in my experience anyway Talking with people there they're really hung up on something they're like really that's that's what thinks That's what you think Jesus can't forgive. Yeah, amazing, right the kind of stuff
I know I'm sometimes it is terrible too, but you just like What I'm really encouraged by this 1415 and they're saying God forgive sins Interestingly enough coincidentally enough divine fox he is a woman. I thought she's a orthodox nun I follow her on Instagram. Okay, he's a Spanish speaker. So if you don't speak Spanish Get it translator. This is her meditation though is Temptation numbs the will But it is fought with obedience and faithfulness in every day life intense prayer ferment reception of the sacraments and true pain for our sins Don't wait to feel motivated But what turn towards God and ask what is your will pray that I will be done So there you go. Yeah, yeah, that's beautiful But she's talking about in the sense of because she says you know, is your Do you feel like your spiritual life is stagnant and you're unable to react to temptation? She's like well, that's because it's muted your will. It's numbing your will But thankfully she pulls it out in the end and says
So then turn your attention towards God and asking so what's your will? Yeah We talk this is the thing right and and I'm as a bondage of the will guy was guilty Is anybody probably won't go deep which is We don't talk about obedience in Lutheran church anymore not really we talk about the third use of the law in our church body In a hamphisted kind of way very hamphisted We deny the whole the will in relation to salvation, but we affirm the will in relation to our vocations Well, I mean we we try to teach the third use without the second anymore. Yeah, which is just like yeah Well, now you have to actually deny our very confession. This says the law always accuses To me the way the third use is usually an unciated is this is how you don't die Also, this is your self chosen way of bearing crosses well I mean that is the language of wisdom in the scripture Do this and you will live do that don't do this and you'll die. Yeah, right? I mean that's okay I'm a little bit of a way Well, because they refuse to obey on the day he says that they all agree because they had just had a picnic
They're literally dressed in their Sunday best. They had all just had baths the night before they're ready to go right It's a great day. Right clearly. We're all gonna be you and choose life Lord. Why will we choose otherwise Three days later they're choosing death And they all die in the desert because that's the book of numbers take another lap And we'll see what happens in 10 years right 40 years they wait 40 years He goes into the promised land ahead of them and they refuse to cross the river Why oh there's big people there They're too big you've promised us the land flowing with not gonna honey you can say there'd be people So I've taken I've taken to this I must have been from a universal history, you know with Pajot and and Roland but I've taken to think in a thinking of Noah and his family as being like seven foot eight foot tall people I don't know why but they lived a long time Maybe they were also very they were just taller That's a pretty common well, that's what ancient and medieval tradition
That they were giants. Yeah, that they were giants. Yeah, well we would call giants. Yeah And that's just I don't know why I bring this up very tall people Yeah Very tall people the statues in Egypt in a Syria may not actually be Exaggerations they might be like to scale right right yeah All right, so where are we here? Okay, therefore against despair For to induce him that is sick and laborethan is dying to very trust and confidence That he should principally have to God at that time the disposition of Christ in the cross should greatly draw him Of the witch there it is again St. Bernard say a thus what man is he that should not be ravished and drawn to hope and have full confidence in God And he take heed diligently of the disposition of Christ's body in the cross Take heed and see his head is inclined to save the Saviour His mouth to kiss the his arms spread to be clipped the Be clip embrace
His hands thrilled pierced to give the his side open to love the his body along Straight to give all himself to the that is Bernard Yeah, I'm Barnard of clairvoy by the way We have a little bit of that poem in Osacrid had now wounded That's what it's referring to To his poetry on on Christ's body So How old thou what are we singing and abide with me hold thou thy cross before my dying eyes right? my closing eyes excuse me and Luther Talks about having the accruciate fix at hand yes place it before their eyes as they die. Oh, and we had it in Hammer of God right? Yeah, right? That's right. Yeah, I can't remember which anecdote that was with with the cross at the bedside But so this I mean this is a very old tradition, but it is true I'm thinking of the iconography. I couldn't help but the way he described it In the east the eastern iconography of the crucifixion where Christ has his head inclined to the slide
Yeah, I've never really thought about that serpent in the wilderness Eshaped body. Yeah. Oh, is that what it is Well, it's all of it the with his head inclined in the east. It's a serpentine body. It's an eshaped But that the very posture of the cross is one of embrace But it also has salvation in it. Yeah, yep And of course the shedding of the blood is coming to the side You have all of that there and that that would be a comfort to the one who is in despair because of his body dying this Christ has been here before that that always seems kind of flat to me Well, you know, Jesus went through it too Right he was tempted in every way that you are But without sin, but without sin he sympathized with you in every way But that's it's that sympathy part that I don't or compassion that I don't Well, maybe I just have a hard time believing it. I don't I It like how is it that he can sympathize Like how do I communicate that to someone as a pastor or how do I experience that as a viewer
Well again, what we'll do is we'll transcribe that in the therapeutic language right exactly as empathy Oh Not compassion Interestingly, I watched a woman this morning talk about empathy leading to madness Hmm Trying to feel what others feel will lead you into madness Because you can't you can't So so you'll come close and that's the madness Maybe if you've experienced it yourself you can at the very least we'll call it sympathizing We've talked about this, but it's it's it's I know it's not good pastor Because I've tried it right where it's like well, I know you know my grandmother died It's like yeah, they don't need to hear any of that one. I don't I don't care Because my grandma's dead. Yeah, this is my grandma. I don't know your grandma I don't care about your grandma and you saying that makes me feel like you're detached from reality right right like stop it My grandma was guilty of Whenever you'd say hey, I broke my rib she would then say oh
My friend's daughter That's what's actually in Christ your entire spinal column. Yes, no. What are you doing? So but that's different than saying Look to Christ on his cross Right. How is it different? Because you're directed outside yourself again. Mm-hmm. Just something higher. Yeah, that swallows that up Yeah into itself. Yeah And again, we're talking journal language again of I need to be swallowed by this great fish Because the pain I'm going through or the crisis that I'm in or the sin that is attacking me is so great I can't escape it where where can I go to a to escape the evil ones attacks Where far shall I flee you know what I should do to spare my family these attacks is I'll just flee to the wilderness and live in a cave by myself Well, that's not for family. It was let's I'm saying though. That's not noble. No, that's cowardice But it's cowardice because you're hopeless and you're hopeless because you're not looking upwards at Christ You're looking flat and looking around saying what can I do? I don't have the strength anymore
I had this I had this startling revelation the other day which I'll share with you and our listeners Which I mean it's probably something that everyone else has already thought of some popcorn. Hold on Yeah, I know it's gonna be real exciting. I will sympathize with you but when Peter and Andrew James and John they lay down their fishing nets and they follow Jesus So did their wives and children? Yes Yeah, I bet you know because you're always like oh well, you can't I could never do that And it's like the whole family did it's a whole host of people following Jesus Who do you think the 4,000 5,000 are it includes the apostles and their families or the disciples at that point right and you're It's like really they just like left everything. Yeah, and their wives and children. This is what we're all called to It's that higher reality right we're gonna go with you Jesus wherever you take us Paul himself says it If it were up to me, I'd say don't get married And he's not being a misogynist or no, he's literally saying trust me dude the suffering that I've gone through You're gonna go through Anybody you love you're gonna try to avoid this at all costs right, but a lot of people get caught up in it
That's not a bad thing when it comes to Christ, but it's an appeal to the flesh Oh, oh well, I guess I always imagined you know that that you know Peter left is his wife and children behind You know, and they got to go to school and do all the normal things and then he went was this nomadic thing But obviously you would have to forsake his fatherly vocation Right and we know he's married because he is a mother-in-law, right? But we don't ever hear the description of the family That's the reason why I kind of just never thought about you don't ever see a picture either But you've got the women James and John has their mothers with them the whole time right right the mother of the son because she appeals to Jesus at that one point Yeah, and she's there at the cross with the other women right, you know So why did I bring this up? Oh that we get caught up in it and And What was that how did that connect with all we're talking about the higher reality? So they all know the pain of the cross they all know what's going You know what what happened to Jesus they were all received the teaching right right this is the whole host of heaven is gathered
With one angel let's think about it in in terms of spiritual attack What if hypothetically what if let's do a little thought experiment here, okay? What if these old ways were actually effective and actually had power and that's why they're not taught anymore The art of dying stuff yeah, yeah hold out the cross Because they all lead us back to the well, but what about Jesus? But you and I do this yeah, so I had to see which is why people look at us and say things to me like you're weird Well, because the widow at now widow asked you know for last rights and then I came and did it four days in a row Right I kept coming and what do we do we prayed the creed we prayed the prayer I had a crucifix right yeah the first day I had the sacrament because he was still able to receive it right you know, and it's like We did the church thing Which the means by which Christ is appointed to give and sustain faith even in the face of death. Yeah, so I'm sorry You were gonna say no, it's similar to the sense of
The pharmaceutical industry has a vilified herbalism mm-hmm, right? So most people can't walk around in their yard and name the plants that are growing including oils oil and just nutritional Mm-hmm nutritional to well if they're gonna do that to your plants so that you have to go to a doctor and go to a pharmacy and Use petroleum based pharmaceuticals What do you think they're gonna do for you spiritually then? Yeah, you think that burning down churches is the worst thing that they can do to a Christian That doesn't even begin to cover Such as hey that old stuff that was really effective against me Let's let's attack that by saying hey, you know, you're really weird when you say this stuff and it's making people uncomfortable and Are you suggesting then that this person 50 years ago who's had these things was wrong? You don't want to say that because XYZ reasons versus well, what's the truth? Well, if they're effective the devil's gonna attack them. Yeah Yeah, so that and it's very big there's not gonna be the thing that leads you to hell
No, no, well, I mean the HBO show might but not the blocks right Read it first lecayla guins review of Harry Potter If you want to know I don't know this. Oh, it's fantastic. Oh Yeah, she calls for a middling talent at best What is she says they're not even that good There's no like no, I first lecayla guin and I love her as an author and she wrote one of the best books on how to be a writer that I've ever read But she's like I mean there she goes they're written for children. Yeah She also let that or was she dead when they made the Disney movie? No, no she was she was dead dead. Okay. Yeah, it's like I could The Disney movie oh Yeah, yeah, I'm comfortable even thinking about it, but again you attack it so that You don't go back and read the books Because reading the books would lead you to it. It's like I said for those of you don't know After George Orwell died the CIA actually bought the rights to animal farm Then produced a cartoon for children, which is aimed at adults but children liked it where they changed the ending of animal farm
The ending of the novel is Revolution only leads to a different form of oppression That's the reason that the the humans and the pigs are having a dinner party They're indistinguishable it says meaning capitalism and communism are just different forms of oppression. Yeah The CIA changed the ending to be well the farm animals revolts against the pigs and they take the farm back and read Anti-communism right yeah, right And you're like oh now that's ruined forever because I raised my children on that car I would I remember saying with um We're talking about violent revolution. I still think we can use a good revolution. I do too Well, I think there needs to be some trials for There needs to be at least some pushback for the god sakes. They're not even protesting well What's the I mean what do you call it trial when you The Supreme Court legalized child pornography and no one's protesting as long as it's fake. Yeah, right? Said from say people that don't understand AI. I'll know I'll know the Google see it the Google internet scraper no
What was it when you betray your country? What do we call that addition? Rebellion and reason right we need trials for treason. Mm-hmm right and some of that and so that we would be without three branches of government if we had those Because they would all be excuse as my congressman said Recently not on air just in conversation. Uh, oh somebody as one of my one of my members asked him You know how bad is it in Washington? He's like oh if only you knew well like okay, so And next just keep making your devil's bargain. I guess that's what it is. What's the voting booth? Yeah, make that devil's bargain. He's got to be voluntary. Yeah It's how the spells work keep participating in it. Do you realize that our elections are just giant black magic rituals? Right because both sides cheat No, because it's a devil's bargain you have to choose your slave masters you have to choose we choose evil Yeah, it's actually the language we use choose the lesser evil. Yeah It's like why am I choosing evil at all? It's a giant magic ritual. That's all it is Yeah, I go back at previous magic rituals
So on the one hand we can't fix it on the other hand We're not gonna rebel we're not gonna. We're not gonna. We're not gonna. Change anything. So What we'll do instead is live in hopelessness And just poison ourselves. By the way if you want to run for office and serve in that capacity and try to make Make something out of it. That's that's great. Maybe do it local. But every day you need a father confessor I would I would expect a you need spiritual guidance. Yeah, yeah somebody who's solid Yeah, I'm gonna vacation to Maryland next summer. We're gonna stop off in DC. So I'm trying to figure out what talismans I need At least have it. We're my crucifix at least yes a giant pectoral cross I'm walking through the national mall 100 percent This place this place in the shadow of the astro pole excuse me Washington monument. That's right exactly Yeah, no, we don't we don't want to call it out but we don't want to call it out because then we'd be responsible Well, I did just call it out, but now I'm not gonna do it. It doesn't matter. You're weird and we're just being hyperbolic
And we're conspiracy not anyways. So yeah, I know nothing we say and you and we don't have enough views on YouTube for anybody to do anything Nothing we say is true, which is why I'm not monetized. We can't be demonetized. So that's helpful All right, let's see therefore no man should despair of forgiveness But fully have hope and confidence in God. That's a great line For the virtue of hope is greatly commendable and of great merit before God. Hope is a virtue. What? It's greatly commendable too, isn't it? And of great merit before God. God loves it. Yes He loves hope. He loves to see hope in us As the apostles say I've been exalted us lose not your hope and confidence in God the witch hath great reward of God. Well, we can't talk reward from Hebrews Mm-hmm Furthermore That no sinful man should and no wise despair Have he sinned never so greatly nor never so sore nor never so often or never so long continue there and We have opened in sample in Peter that denied Christ and Paul that pursued holy holy church in Matthew and Zacchaeus the publicans in Mary
Model line. Well, I like that. Hmm the sinful woman in and we can argue about whether she was or not That was taken in a vow tree. Oh In the thief that hung on the cross beside Christ and Mary Egyptian and in a numerous other Grievous and great sinners who happen to be also saints, right? By the way, this is the other thing that you're probably noticing if you're listening, which is the medieval's had a fantastic legendarium. Oh Oh, yeah, cuz who's Mary Egyptian? You don't know miss St. Mary of Egypt He says as if that's oh you big what is you know, I see Mary of Egypt. She's fantastic I'm looking at her. She's great. We just celebrated her day a couple was last month. Oh you did who's we here? Kimber. Anyway, St. Mary of Egypt is awesome. Who is she? What is that foreign here we go Mary of Egypt Egyptian grazer saint Said to have 12 in Byzantine era Palestine in 5th century 400s. Yeah, 5th century. Yeah The hagyography the life of our venerable mother of Mary of Egypt tells her life story through the framing device of an encounter with the
Hyromunk Zazimus of Palestine near the Jordan River And she described a debauch life of lost the way she traveled. So when I said last month, I'm an April. Sorry Apparently I've collapsed the entire spring into one couple days. Huh. Yeah, she's great Hmm. Well, is it true? I have to say okay. Yes, it is true. It's just not a fact. But it's a hagyography. Oh no, not that Again, if it was if it wasn't relevant or effective it we would still be by the way Hogyography just means a biography of a saint. Yeah, exactly. It doesn't mean it means holy or something Hogy, uh, Hogyus holy meaning dedicated. But now we use the word hagyography to describe like super What it what it not super people who love it. Hey Exaggerated story there we go. Yeah. Yeah, huh. Yeah, he just threw her out there like okay. You know, does her brain who she was All right, well think times have changed a little bit unfortunately. No, talk to me about Luke Skywalker. Okay, there we go. There's your hog
ography Speaking of fake the third temptation is impatience The witch is against charity Hmm by the witch we be bound to love God above all things What he believes in charity. I'm sorry. No, it's just every time you say the witch. I just I can't the witch Not yet. She's a witch. She's a witch for they that be the carrot For they to be in sickness and their deathbed suffered passingly great pain passingly as an tumor Great pain and saw sorrow and woe and namely that they die not by nature and course of age that have a threat Sell them as open experience teaches men but die often through an accidental sickness as a fever a past June This reminds me of Jacob In Egypt. Oh, postune is tumor. Sorry. Just the fact that Jacob everything that we know about Jacob when he's an elder Is just him complaining about the fact that he's still alive Oh, right at in in the end of Genesis
Yeah, in Egypt with it. He's like God, I'm gonna die before I get back to Egypt. I'm never gonna see Joseph definitely get there And he's like I'm gonna die in Egypt. I'm never gonna have my bones taken home No, but this is this is good and such other grievous and painful and long sickness because the manager's buried You know, he had delivered kidney failure for 12 years. Yeah, you know, and he's going in for the house this three days a week And it's and you know that Whether you said it out loud or not you're thinking wins my time Like how long do I have to suffer this lord? Yeah, I mean in one sense you're like well, it's a modern invention. You get to live at all right now Yeah, dialysis. Yeah, it is but on the other hand, I mean, they're do it. It is true that people can be sick for a long period of time Which probably dress that too since you mentioned it um, I always I now it is I tend to look at this within Tolkien's writings on being subcreators That is that with medicine Yeah, well like kidney dialysis right because You will have is it Christian scientists that refuse transfusions transfusion stuff which is no that's 70 hadventus
Okay, so the avidus Or maybe like fundamentalist branches of christianity that don't that don't accept modern medicine or anything is Is the things that are in for example, I would be blind If it weren't for modern technology. Oh, I'm sorry. I confuse 70 avidus with jahova's witnesses. Okay. Sorry I mean potato potato jahova's witnesses are the ones that don't teach you they're all cold. It doesn't matter In the end so theologically that's very similar. So The point of being us being created to be some creators that We are driven to care for creation Because we're creating in God's image and yet because of sin that is twisted up and it is Absent in us minus the Holy Spirit. So then When I see someone dying of kidney disease because God loves them and God wants to treat them I want to love them and treat them. It's called kari toss. It's called charity. I want to show them grace. Yeah
And What I find interesting and this goes back to what I said about beauty beauty is to be less selfish That used to be the definition the old ancient definition of beauty was to be less selfish and Edgar on post said that beauty isn't a quality it's It's a consequence of being a relationship with somebody Someone makes you beautiful. You're not born beautiful. Mm-hmm. So Likewise, you can't choose to not be selfish. That's actually selfish Right So beauty is in that either beholders true Right is that yes, you yes, your eye makes them beautiful Right, I talked about the Sufi poet whether I can't remember this room here or shams who said You say I'm beautiful, but it's your eye that's beautiful You say I'm flawed, but it's your eye that's flawed It's not again the Cartesian worldview just doesn't apply here. Yeah, we're talking about people that are A part of a thousands years long tradition in all of civilization by the way
It's not purely objective or subjective then No, that is that's both simultaneously because that's the cart. Yeah. Oh, okay. All right Because you have heaven and earth and they're over each other. They're overlapping right? So you have heaven covering earth and meaning in the earth supporting the heavenly with a physical But it likes the wounds of Christ. Yeah, are they a flaw now? No, they're beautiful Sure, they're a flaw for an atheist sure exactly. Yeah, cuz he died you worship a dead god. Yeah Who had the Christian goes? Yeah, actually I do. Mm-hmm. Right Well, that's where the categories don't work then right? Yeah, well, there are categories. God doesn't use categories He's all in all Hence mystery right? Yeah unity. There's there's mystery and unity Mm-hmm, but there's also knowing and unity. There's missed. There's wonder and hope and unity There is love and unity because we talked about this Modern people think faith is an individual thing an individual choice and individual quality whatever you want to call it That's a very modern invention Nobody writing about your faith is set you free
Confuses what Jesus says with anything other than I set you free right Like why would he deny that he sent himself free or that he healed the man? The man didn't have faith before Jesus healed him Yeah, I love the blind man. I was like, I don't even what are you singing? The only way he's ever gonna know Recognize Jesus a syphe here's him right exactly like I said the blind woman in St. Bridget gotta hear and then once he sees he gets ex-communicated and driven out of the village Because the religious leaders tell him Jesus didn't heal your blindness. That's impossible. He's a demon Or is this a marital or worth is a Samaritan exactly or worse or just for both you guys marriage with the name Yes, no region. Yes, German Norwegian. Yes. Yes. Yeah, so in in patients. We're getting to that with long sickness. Yeah, the which many men Sorry, now you got me on it and namely those that be undisposessed to die and disproc- unprepared to die and die against their will and
Black very charity make us so impatient and grudging Ooh that other while Through woe and impatience they become wood and witless and as it have been seen in many men So I love this idea of impatience being contrary to charity and by charity meaning love of neighbor So the person who perseveres through Through kidney dialysis for decade or whatever For the sake of their neighbor for their wife for their children Right, that's that's Christian charity. Well, just simply I'm not gonna do this anymore because nothing's happening I keep doing this, but nothing changes. I quit. Yeah Or I don't want to do this anymore. Perseverance is the opposite of patients. Yeah. Yeah Yeah And so buy it that it is open and certain that they that they that die in that wise fail and lack very charity witnessing st. Jerome that sayeth thus That is who so take a sickness or death with sorrow or displeasure of heart
It is an open and certain sign that he loveeth not God sufficiently. Ooh that's hard Therefore that man that that will die well dying well. That's a whole mother. That's the subject It is needful that he grudge not and no manner of sickness that falleth to him before his death or in his dying Be it ever never so painful or grievous long time or short time dying Hmm What is this word grudging and grudging Do we do we have a good translation of that? Oh, I was thinking about grudge guitars Uh It's not coming grudge is not coming up in Webster. Well, you know what you have to use um you Oxford English use the super Google internet scraper um grudge Grudge and what's the other word grudging? Because he's used it and it's a particip Polir form To grudge and grudging to murmur complain. Ah
Grudging oh like grouch It's just grouch yeah grousing we use grudge grudge grudge grouch grouch grouch grousing okay I can dialectical form of grudge grudge grudge grub to grumble to complain They grudged against Moses in the wilderness. Yeah. Oh, I'm gonna do that. Yeah, you're gonna use that now I'm gonna hear it in a poem. I know it's coming out. Yep. Yep um So complaining Just needful that he dot complain. I mean complaint. I lay my complaints before the Lord I think you can stop in the upper Midwest if you can't complain. That's like 80% of every conversation Well, you're gonna be dead then yeah exactly. How do you know she died? She stopped complaining It's funny because it's true. It is because I had a my beloved ed when she was dying from pancreatic cancer didn't complain anymore That's how we knew I was that's how I knew she was sick. It was the end. You know it was the end Oh, I knew she was sick because she stopped complaining and she got soft. She became tender Especially towards children and you're like what's happening right now? Why are you being weird?
And then she called and like I got a diagnosis you're like oh, yeah Now that you say it. Yeah, that's why you changed your body knew before you did. Yeah, right exactly Your spirit knew For a St. Gregory witness and his morals All things that we suffer we suffer then rightfully and therefore we Be greatly unrightful if we grudge of that which we suffer rightfully Then every man should be patient a st. Louis st. Luke say it In your patients he shall possess your souls That's a Luke 2119 For by patients man soul is surely had and kept so by impatience and murmuration it is lost and damned So your soul is the breath of life that is in you and for the medievals it exists inside and outside of you because inhale exhale Right So the number of mumble or murmur or grumble is to express the soul in such a way that and remember
Then that it could be influenced by powers Outside your body And so grumbling would be an expression of breathing out of the spirit of the soul You're you saying that Midwest Midwestern people have corrupt souls because they're grouch all the time Oh, you didn't say it. Okay, I thought you were going there your honor. I would like to invoke my fifth man and write to himself in combination That's funny the fifth But it makes sense in the medieval context then that if if there are spirits around you that are influencing you at all times And not all those spirits are good and beneficent. Uh-huh. Don't grumble because you're that's you said this earlier That is opening the door. Yeah, by the way the word window Literally means an eye Oh, like a door to the wind So you're essentially opening the window to let in spirits But the grouching too is a lack of charity Because I mean think about the kind of uh, I was thinking we were talking about blackpilling or doom pilling
right and uh My spouse is no longer allowing me to talk about certain subjects because they And she's not wrong Because those things you don't need those things going into you Right, I don't need to rest I shouldn't receive I'm receiving them and now I'm speaking them They become part of you or they are part of you at that point Neuroscientists even say this I was talking about this maybe on last episode But I was listening to a brief lecture by a neuroscientist who said in his language Repeating the same thing over and over a carves neural pathways in your brain So that if you're saying oh Here we go again. It's a litany then it becomes a litany and you default to it It becomes a groove on the record And he said so what he tells people is when I treat people say out loud the opposite of it because you have to re-carve You get the car of new grooves and it's been planted in your soul. Yeah, it's a default mode So you have to literally like carve a whole new canal Rear out the water through your brain. The rewalt the synopsis they say things like self-talk but yeah, but that's the idea
But literally but my beloved Christian brothers who are my teachers say go for a walk go southside Talk to a tree talk to the birds talk to God And just pray again and what rossio is a discourse the conversing this is our Sunday reading with the um Wind eye. That's what it was in in old Norse vinauga Means we know we know none of the nine You know, why did they not return and get that and because the one is thankful? I know there's a lot of Surmins on this on thankfulness, but we have those gratitude exercises is the thing that the psychologists have talked about grad u journals are Going to lead you into the underworld They fragment you because you're grateful for nothing well and to no one That's what I mean, yeah, because you're not grateful to get you're you're literally grateful for a gift Versus the gift of the well, and that's the problem with the nine lepers who don't return correct They've received the gift yeah, but they haven't turned to the giver right they're just they're just they want the gift
But they don't want to say to the giver hey, I recognize you Anyhow the priests are at fault in that because they don't turn him back I mean at least they could have said who did this to you yeah, we want to find this guy too And because they didn't turn they'll say a man Hmm a prophet. Oh, yeah, holy man a healer. Maybe kind of an abstraction. Yeah versus God did this to me You know, we do the same thing with medicine. This is God. They could at least look up and say clearly this man is from God at least Right, but he healed us medicine surgery. We do the same thing We treat that as the gift rather than return to the giver from it So thank you for the surgeon in the world edition of the reason you go into the wilderness is to encounter genius Who in this case is Jesus and then return to the village with wisdom that then lifts up the whole village yeah So by returning to their town With this information they encountered the genius in the wilderness in the actual fringes of the society If they return to the center with the wisdom heavenly wisdom and rather than
Praise the wisdom that comes from God They say a man healed us and said come into town and present yourself to the priest get your certificate Right that shows your healed so you can go back to work right And that's a lot that's a lack of charity then Because it's not recognizing what you've been given right And in the end in the stories they always go back into the wilderness at some point Because they don't recognize what they've been given And they don't fit in the center anymore or they conform to the center and end up leprous in a worse way right I said right right used this lays on the dragon's golden becomes a dragon So even though you might look at him now again say he's clearly he's not a dragon Not today Today he's just greedy Well the leprous are healed because he's too troubled from haslam right he's unstuck So then the leprous are unstuck so their leprousy will grow actually it may be of a different character It'll be internal leprousy it'll be spiritual leprousy It'll be in their relationships
Because they will hold they will that leprousy will become the doorway towards me and You could blame Jesus because he didn't say to go show yourself to the priest But he also says go and tell no one I know what happened and they tell everyone and he's so Foxy is like But Jesus that now right I'm not gonna do that. I'm gonna follow you right yeah, and he's like how great is your face Think about the absurdity of saying you need to go out and find foxes trap them and then tie their tails together and then release them Okay, do you know how hard it is to catch a fox let alone many foxes Impossible thing that you right and then my face on fire so they can run through the vineyards and like the vineyards on fire That is almost a John Wick level of impossible task And you're supposed to do it tonight An normal person would say that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard Is there an option B? I have good health insurance What are my options right right couldn't we just call someone doesn't somebody do this for a job for their jobs
So again logically they're just taking him at his word go tell the priest Because they want a re-enter society But there's an old saying that you're so beautiful there must be a slum inside of you Meaning all you have are physical looks And I was talking with a beautiful old woman sorry Sue, but you are old you're my elder And I said you know Your beauty is either your kindness because that's what the word beauty means kindness Or it's physical, but women experience This when they get into their forties they've told me this I've had women say when I was in my 20s and 30s I modeled Men would buy me drinks they'd open doors for me. I turn heads walk on streets all these things right right my date book was full When I turn when I got into my forties They stop calling people didn't buy me things anymore. I'm not really with actress Sure thing we're talking about it too Versus as men get older you have a reverse Phenomenon where they have a career and they become more confident and more relaxed
And they're not these kind of lean wolves on the hunt all the time So younger women are attracted to them women that are looking for confidence safety Somebody with a career so they're not unstable They want so they'd be like Brad Pitt in his 60s In many according to my wife and others is more attractive than Brad Pitt in his 20s Right because he's like a silver fox now he's relaxed because he's a billionaire So he can be relaxed, but he he's got that charm of a man who is like I got my I got stuff You know, I got my life. I'm trustoring. Yeah And so But Brad Pitt has a slum inside of him The woman in her 20s that only has her beauty has a slum inside of her the leopard that's healed and doesn't return to Christ It has a slum inside of him That is the temptation is to say well, and this happened to be in college by the way and Others early on in social media encourage this which is you're an addict and a convert to Christianity tell that story
And that becomes all of a sudden a brand now that you're getting paid for And then you're known as that thing and people only want to see you and talk to you and identify you as that thing Yeah, I'm trying to think there was a then becomes a temptation to pride and identity There was a name that came up and I was like oh, that's the guy he writes about homosexuality You're like right Is that really like right you want to have your whole identity kind of wrapped up in my mind anyway But do you know what people what Christians don't want me to talk about at retreats And I've mentioned this so I might as well keep talking about it. Sure The they don't want me to talk about how Jesus healed my addiction Yeah, you've said that they don't want the not only are they uncomfortable with it. They don't want me to talk about it Is it because they don't believe it? Yes, or they don't want to believe it? Yes Because it is it is unbelievable And of course materialistic kind of way. Yeah, of course. Yeah, once an addict always an addict right Like because your identity is wrapped up in that yeah Now who did the wrapping up? Yeah of the identity. Yeah, and what is and then what does Jesus say because my addiction is in the past
It's not in the future No, you're a new creation. It's exactly exactly I read that in the Bible. It's no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me Yeah, so therefore put that stuff away put back put away the things of the past I see hard. Yeah, it is hard Well, it's hard because you're tempted to hold on to it because it's the thing that defined you Even though it's so long really right We talked yesterday in this in this Conversation I had about why do abused spouses stay in the relationship even though they admit themselves there in an abusive relationship Because of the familiarity of it because of the certainty of it Well, and the the fear of anything else yes without this but outside of What's happening There's just again a circulation a circular movement of people saying this is bad But inside of it is you spent so much time justifying and explaining And telling stories But what you're not recognizing is spiritually you're captive
I know you it's possible you're called to a patience there Mm-hmm, right? It's also possible that it's already dead Mm-hmm, and you're trying to live with with in-dass Right Jesus will not allow you to stay in an abusive relationship right However, the the strong man Will demand that he remove you bodily from the relationship Mm-hmm But if you're not spiritually set free there's a slum inside of you and you will not maybe you don't run back to the spouse that abused you But you will run to others who will abuse you maybe even worse. Yeah the pattern. There's a pattern right because it's familiarity Because you've been bitten by serpents Well, I think I'm we've talked about this but the freedom of pharmacia means both medicine and poison simultaneously right Yeah The freedom of the gospel the forgiveness of sins Is terrifying? You know to the old Adam who loves
What things never to change I mean, yeah, we've struggled with this you know I think for people to leave a congregation that they've been a part of yeah, it's it is a death. It's a little death And it's fearful It's not easy to do we don't want it to be easy to do as well Leaving the center for the fringes and the fringes the fringes are disintegration It's one thing if you move for a job or something like that But I'm talking about where your home remains where it is acrimony right or in or avarice But I think I mean I know I it's hard as a pastor to say I've been called to this place And maybe the Lord's telling you something different than that. Mm-hmm, but to not you just can't hear it You know what I mean? Because Holy Spirit will always lead one towards prayer forgiveness and communion sacraments The evil one will always lead you away from prayer to a different kind of oration a different kind of discourse which is one direction
You you you you you always you never It'll so he'll lead you to a kind of prayer that's a besieging of your wrong. I'm right over and against There will be no confession in absolution. There will just be accusation and judgment and ultimately there will be a disunion a discord. There will be no concordia There'll be division and Paul names this in Galatians 5 in the works of the flesh and the works of a man's hands and the spirit of the fruits of the spirit And we know it is written there. It's literally written down on and yet when it comes time to say hey Who's doing this to us? What's happening? Galatians 5 is just gone You just eat well who does that right because one who's led by the spirit is going to go straight to that So if you're not led by the spirit of God you're being led by a different spirit But as I commented the other day in Bible class I said do any of you actually even believe in angels and even Do any of you actually believe in the spirits you don't even you can't name five virtues for me
You can't name five vices. I can't because I watched Seven That's right. Yeah, there you go I can never remember all seven even the eyes on the face. He was all seven it turns out in real life. So Did I say Yeah, he wasn't playing frank and under what he was frank under what is true story So then we refused to acknowledge that the evil one is a real creature that the fallen angels are creatures that angels are creatures that there are spirits We refuse to acknowledge any of that's true because it violates The pattern of Cartesian worldview Jungian psychoanalysis the whole thing And by rejecting it we've essentially left the front gates of the city open and said come on in there's no such thing as monsters And every day monsters walk free. Yeah, because there's no such thing as monsters. It's hormone. Well, that's why I said it if there's no Romans 13 kind of justice happening. Mm-hmm socially We're living among steams or at least possessed by
Right no absolutely demons are running the show clearly Right, I mean we used to call it as their people which is kind of Materialist. Yeah, we call them aliens, but It's the same thing that's materialism. Yeah, yeah, it's that's the siop the siop is convincing Christians to call demons That is not demons. Oh, yeah, well, there are ptilians like no, they're demons. Well, they're scruter right there rebel angels I mean that was yeah, it got it got Lewis and trouble But that was the point is the they're possessed the word you're looking for is possession Not you but people in general they're not reptilians wearing skins. They're not skin walkers. They're not changelings They're actually possessed. Well, or maybe that myth maybe that mythology is a way of explaining demonic activity It's the post-World War II New quote unquote modern mythology. We call them the graze and the greens and sugar. Yeah. Yeah Hmm Nope just evil spirits. They've been around for a while So stop complaining
Yeah, stop complaining stopping impatient that god isn't quote unquote. Oh, by the way Full full transparency. This is my sin right here in patience grudging grudging I'm in a grudge with god right now. I think it's a month. Yeah, they get the text. So yeah, that's right. Yeah, no well What's weird is we talked about it and I'll just kind of wave cap it every pastor that I've talked to no matter where they're at Uh-huh in the in the world actually is grudging right now. Yeah and saying I phrased it as I feeling a barometric pressure change the likes of which I haven't felt even since 20 I said it was the thunder that kept me up. Maybe it was a gastrointestinal pain, but maybe it's because I'm grudging Yeah, that that's all just a reflection. No, there's a barometric pressure in the air at least in in western Countries right now. What's the word for spiritual pressure? Yeah, exactly something like that. It's a weight So weight yeah, it is and I feel it physically. I feel like I'm I told you I feel like I'm running through a pool Maybe some of death would be one way to describe it. No, it's more powerful. It's heavier than that
It's the shadows like the air is heavy like I'm low like I'm running through a pool And everybody talked to you when I say that they're like yeah, that's exactly what I feel like and Physically people are being affected mentally. They're being affected. Yeah, and it's not just either and what we're trying to say It's not just harp. It's not just the season or harp. No There's something much worse. Yeah The the physical consequences are manufactured climate change manufactured famine manufactured outrage manufactured etc etc That's the physical consequences of the evil ones machinations But the spiritual stuff that that we're naming and the spiritual stuff that we're looking backwards and say Okay, how did you deal with this in the 1400s? And you realize that the the foundations the same But the way they addressed it is completely different than the way we address it Well, it's what I've heard of them as primitives even though they seem much more mature and advanced than we are Right in this area right and that's what I'm hearing from this. I'm finding it actually quite helpful
Although I'm still ready to grudge some more. How many saints could you quote Knowing that people would implicitly know who you're talking about Other than St. Patrick and St. Valentine and St. Nicholas You know, there you go And and the and St. Luke we could do St. Luke definitely do the The gospel writers the gospel writer the Bible Give me five saints off the top of your head that people would recognize if you quoted them Well, and if you did, I mean he quoted this St. Austin quite a bit Or Albert if you did People would be like why are you name dropping So you know because they're like well, what authority do they have exactly? Yeah, which is which is also a sad commentary in another way is that We used to call them divine. You know these these teachers are the first looking at a Steinway a grand piano And then looking at a bar piano that's been sitting in the corner for like 70 years and saying they're the same No, it's like functionally Sure, they both make music but yet
Come on now you really you don't you know know the difference between these things. Yeah, there's a hierarchy there But Tom waits at a Steinway. He's not Tom waits That's fair Yeah, he has to sit at the upright But the point is the point I'm making you dick You're being me today. It's really strange that we were sure Is Again, we look at the fruit not the not the one who planted the tree We look at the vines rather than looking at the one who produces the fruit And as a consequence everything's flat everything's horizontal. We're looking at each other just like Adam We're after we eat the fruit and we're saying well, what can we do and the answer is you can do nothing Because there's powers that work that are greater than yourself And so what you do is you come up with conspiracies to explain them away Or at the very least give your sense of self of intellectual control Or you go to a counselor or therapist to get some sort of emotional control But these are all death because they lead to nothing Because you're going to die They're all flat and
I'm going to rewatch the first season of True Detective Because it's time I always watch it every year we watch it every year It's time that show is flat that is literally time is a flat circle and it's a lot of wrote it And meaning it's the eternal reoccurrence of the same as the fancy way of saying it yeah, right But Well, you watch it every year so everything yeah, well, I think that's actually if he intended that He's a genius But the fact that you would go back to the show and rewatch it in a cycle It's dark it's evil wicked definitely it's flat it's hopeless everyone in the show's hopeless And at the and all you get at the end is Kormak McCarthy at the end of the road Right where the little boy sees light shining down. I say that's the most hopeful But it is it is really yeah even sutry which is kind of a good entry point for McCarthy's work sutry still is Kind of hopeless because McCarthy himself was hopeless. I don't remember how far I got into what is it all the pretty horses?
Yeah, and I just like I just stop I just stop yeah, it's like the silence of the lambs Do you hear the lambs clearest? um But what you end up with at the end of tree detective is the fact do you see just the darkness Trying to swallow the stars or do you see the stars fighting against the darkness right that's really The entire thing brings them just to fatalism yep It's just two different kinds of fatalism One's more half glass glass half full and one's more half empty, but they're both still dead Right versus you know rust waking up in the house or saying hey, you know what after everything we've gone through and encountering the face of evil I think there might be a god Like that would be the thing you would say yeah, I would be I was questioning whether or not that sort of media is helpful or not the other day because I I I'm with you I appreciate it in that it it describes the condition the soul apart from Christ. Yeah
I don't know how much of that you actually need though You know more than eight episodes. I could tell you that yeah, but the just because I was thinking about it with like breaking bad Mm-hmm, you know where the characters aren't redeemed yeah, and they're because they're unredeemable and then that's That's sad because that's despairing then mm-hmm, right? Um, so I was just wondering how far how how that what was the show thinking of that was like this Well, I talked with friends of mine who are in the anti, you know fighting a human trafficking And talking though about we know you're aware that there's government agencies You're working with that are complicit in human trafficking. Yeah, and they and they have to they say I know that like I know that I'm working like the tale and the the head are not Working together. Oh, and then there's factions within or this factions with infections with infections Yeah, it's a hydrates a gargoyle within the CIA the madus So then how do you deal with it? I ask and they say well you compartmentalize and say I don't I can't control that That doesn't involve me and if I encounter it then I will deal with it quickly violently and decisively
But I got to rescue these kids in Haiti That I'm on the ground going to rescue right now and then I go home At the time while it weathering stay in the way and then maybe this is not true of others But everybody that I know that works in human trafficking fighting it are all Christians devout And I bring it up in relation to shows like true detective because in reality They're confronted with evil and they're saying to themselves They have to confront the reality of like I got to go home to my wife and kids Yeah, and I can't bring this to the door with me because I can't give them the emotive impulses Because part of my brain is saying just shoot them all kill them all Yeah, another part of my brain is in despair because I know that I saved 13 but there's 13,000 still Yeah, but this is hard of darkness. I mean You can't go down the river, but I'm saying is without hope these men will lose themselves. They'll become mad men correct And so in fiction you can leave it in the darkness with hey be optimistic But in reality you can't Because the darkness will win 100% of the time. Yeah, this is the post post-war people coming back from war right
And they don't come back That's the thing I was just talking again yesterday with someone who's nephew came back but didn't come back Yeah, just like my dad and the hundreds of thousands if not millions of other soldiers Wow, because we don't have a we don't have a world war too narrative for the recent collection. We don't have rights Yes initiation back into society. We don't have rights of initiation when you enter into you don't even get a parade anymore You get nothing Other than get ready for another deployment. Yeah back in the meat grinder And then come home and you know go to college or go back to your job or whatever. Thanks for your service So if we take I think we should summarize it we can tidy it up here There's two more temptations one is complacence or pride Then that'd be America. Yeah, and then the other one is Occupation without where things material as we said not only do we not care about the millions of children who are murdered by their mother is every year But then when a mother murders her children we justify that by saying it was hormones Or she's mentally ill, but she's not a murderer. Yes
That this is worldly carnal thoughts. Oh, I mean it doesn't get much more carnal. No not at all A carnival is a celebration of the flesh festival the flesh. Yep. Yeah So the reason then that we can't have celebrations which are as Pajot says every celebration is a unity because you're getting together to celebrate a thing So even people that are celebrating diversity aren't celebrating diversity Because they're all together in unity celebrating diversity. It's an oxymoron good in its contradiction Um, even if you get together to celebrate the flesh during carnival Which happens right before lint Right you gotta let the monsters out for a night. That's what they used to say you gotta let them out for the night because If you don't they're just at the door constantly tempting you during a time when you're weak Because you're gonna fast for 40 days and you're gonna sacrifice for 40 days And so we're gonna confront the monsters for one night Then we're gonna lock the door and walk away So what I was thinking is and by the way the old Adam goes
100% that's a great idea. Yeah, we love it. By the way, can we just drop the fast and just keep the carnival going? You're right exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Well, what if I only fast during the day But then I eat at night like in Ramadan. Can I do that? It's like well then you're not fasting. You're just not eating and is binge eating okay? Well after after night they have a Multicorps meal. Can we have a whole can I eat the whole pizza? Yeah exactly Pizza at midnight it will carry you through till the next day Of a sort is that really fasting then and by the way if you're doing that are you spiritually fasting or are you thinking to yourself Only three hours so I get to eat only two hours so I get to eat only one hour so I get to eat So what I'm struck by by this by this work is these five temptations Which are to be you know, he's trying to make you aware of at the time of death or as you're dying Maybe a long death or a short death doesn't matter um I don't know if it's Luther for sure. I mean Luther does this though Is he brings this all into the daily life of the Christian correct?
Is that the art of dying in in almost an historic way then is to To face all these temptations daily right take take out of the monastery and put on the kitchen table That's what I was thinking yeah these Christian practices yeah right right is that or deflations if you want to call them that How do we address unbelief let's do it daily right? The desperation of right so again Taken without the Christianity. They're still knights. They're still warriors that practice the chivalric way Don't be you know don't seduce young maidens don't be cruel for the sake of proving how powerful you are right um Be humble don't think more of yourself than you actually are and then the Christians came along and said those are godly Yeah It's just that you don't know where they come from so let me introduce you to you who actually works the one yeah exactly Then they became Christian Because it's not enough to I said this in my sermon last week This is to take all things captive to Christ That's not enough to be turned away from sin. It's to be turned towards
The giver of every good game and not only that I would say not always it to be turned away from sin It's Christ, but it is to become openly hostile towards sin To wage war against it's called spiritual warfare. Yeah, but now it's not back time right yeah Yeah, well, it's either at your back or it's at your front, but Yeah, what are you gonna do turn your back and pretend it doesn't? Well, maybe maybe they're on Patrick's breastplate would be helpful you know Christ before very much behind me Christ I'll make Christ blow up me well, no, you know why they pray that mm-hmm well No matter which which whichever way the attack comes right he didn't write that because he was bored And yet some free time he was like I think I think people on Facebook would really like this Yeah, they'll leave it Yeah, he wrote that because someone said hey, what are you praying? And he taught that prayer and he taught that prayer and he taught that prayer and I've had ties on all sides Yeah, and then somebody I I guarantee you he probably didn't write it someone else wrote it But it pyrimizes the face because it has to be written down. Yeah, because this epitomizes the Spiritual warfare that we encounter as Christians. I like how it's against the druids in it too by the way
So God bless the evangelical Christians for keeping this stuff alive at the very least which what like spiritual warfare in the talk of spiritual Forfer because most mainline Protestants I know and Roman Catholics and Orthodox people I know Don't talk about this ever Ever I talk about this in church and people again look at me like I'm the weirdest person in the world or yeah And I think the other thing we'd learn here is it's not just for Sunday morning Yeah, you know, it's not just spiritual talk for Sunday morning. This is yeah This is the you call it chivalric are you repairing it to the chivalric life? Yeah, I'm just trying to I mean we said dying in I was oblige that is the obligation to act nobly that is to be godly But just read Luther's explanations throughout the small catechism and it's gonna echo all these same themes Yeah, you know, whether it's lead us out of lead us not into temptation, right? Yeah, with the devil haunting us day and night I mean a simple way to pray which is a precursor to the catechism Was Luther answering the Peter the barber said hey man
Spiritual warfare. I'm being attacked all the time. I need something help me Well teach me to pray prepare me to die. These are actually not all that different right because it's the same Right, it's the same attacks that are in the sense of the way that I Tonit went right you going to bed at night is rehearsing your death So that when you wake up in the morning you're rehearsing your resurrection. Yeah Well, guess what practicing by praying that is having a discourse with god all day long every day I do this I talked with my wife and children then we all go to sleep and we don't talk and then we wake up and we immediately start talking to each other That should be your discipline every single day talk to the father talk to Christ talk to the Lord spirit every day all day ask hey Are there angels Present are there angels and disguise that are accompanying me and protecting me and could you know maybe give me a are there Well, he promised that exactly. That's what I'm saying. I'm in the cave. I'm in the dark. I'm blind. I'm gonna need a word Just give me a word man something
Throw me a bono a crumb from the table anything. Yeah, that would be good other than just walking around going I sure hope that what I'm saying is true. I have I'm not talking to the sky And I think that what happens then is the well, I know what happens actually the evil one comes along goes There's no one listening to you You're insane You believe something that is juvenile. It's it's just stupid You're you're hiding from reality by doing because that's what I was that's what my dad taught me Christians are just dumb people that are hiding from reality And as you noted then we we if we keep this to Sunday morning unless there's guests and then it's like hey Pastor tone it down Because they're gonna we don't want them to be freaked out and not come back right versus I do What do you hear for yeah, oh you're you're shopping well, we're not selling Well, yeah, and if you're if you're trying to be marketable. Yeah Um, well, you're sure as hell not gonna talk about this stuff in a way, but it's also it's not sustainable
Like the the marketable message isn't isn't anything that holds you through yeah Right it it because it's flat. It's lifeless often right because it lacks the life of Christ so So spiritual warfare something we do we actually have this in our kit because I'm I didn't now that I'm hearing our smorendi here It's like oh, this is the language we always use my daughter's friend just shared this with me What man things are happening gods voice and Satan's voice. Oh look at that. She's devoted to Catholic God's voice will still you You know, say be still Satan's voice says rush move do God's voice leads you Satan's voice confuses you God's voice comforts you Satan's voice pushes you God's voice reassures you Satan's voice frightens you God's voice enlightens I'm the life of the world Satan's voice discourages and sends you down into the darkness
God's voice encourages whereas Satan's voice causes you to worry God's voice calms Satan's voice obsesses you God's voice convicts you Satan's voice condemns Yeah, and there's now no more condemnation exactly Right Christ Jesus exactly Yeah So who are you listening to who are you listening to from the pulpit on Sunday? Who are you listening to at coffee hour or during Bible class? Who are you listening to in the parking lot at school at work? Who are you listening to when you're alone? Or on Instagram or on Instagram take talk whatever it is whatever it might be who you listening to And if you if you get off social media and and all by the way It's a kind of demons get a little lot quieter. Yeah, right. Yeah. Well and A medieval historian I I follow on on YouTube talks about how medieval peasants were happier than we are because they didn't have social media And yet they knew more than us because they're like listen man
If I don't make this cabinet, I don't eat So yeah, the king's tyrannical and he's not a good guy, but I don't have time to worry about that stuff I got to make a cabinet. I got to feed my family And so they were happier because they weren't obsessed by the way, this is simpler life Well simpler in the sense of more more rich It's not a slum. It's a wealthy neighborhood because The world becomes larger the more you focus on what's right in front of you. You posted that yeah And so you you focusing on something small and you admire it and the world becomes bigger and you can sit with that but Satan seduces Every commercial is a seduction because every commercial wants you to rush out literally rush out now before it's too late by this thing It's on sale The commercial confuses you because it's like oh, I can't believe you're doing this but as we said before commercials don't really work with the sound off They don't we talked about that Wednesday because I have a 96-year-old woman who watches TV with the sound off And she says the commercials make no sense
Like we got to talk about this you wrote it up. This is great. I read all the list of complications But I didn't hear the music so I didn't actually yeah commercials are intended to push you frighten you discourage you Like what are you a loser go buy that Where are you oh do you have type 2 diabetes they become obsessed Clearly and they condemn you the reason you can't get a date is because you don't you scope mouthwash Right the reason you know fun is because you don't drink Miller light etc And they're mind the little blue pill or ozempic which is actually so the the conspiracy theorists say that ozempic is to Condition us for famine that famine's coming and so it's normalizing the look of a person that suffers from famine I can see that and they're like well again There's a side of these people There's well men too Actors are taking ozempic Because they have a slum inside of them and it's coming out right And so yeah, they're famished on the insight because they're spiritually What are they what are they eating what are they being fed what voice are they listening to
So God always courts Satan always seduces And everything that we read today was about the temptation to be seduced that is Hey, don't you know and you know what you're on the plane to the spare Inpatients you've waited long enough you deserve an answer you deserve Something to change. Hey, it's been seven years. She's not changing. Right. Maybe she's not your soulmate Right, and as I I joked on Wednesday. Hey, sure. She's my third wife, but this is definitely my soulmate I guarantee you this time. This isn't right and I think well The wife's may change, but I think the problem might be you Right, there's a common thread here. Yes, you keep going to different churches complaining about they're bad But I I noticed there's one common thread and all of this which is you Maybe it's not the churches. Maybe this. I'm not saying it's not yeah I went my wife and I went to over 60 churches when we were at seminary before we found a pastor Who was a Christian pastor who was about the gospel in the sack or maybe just the pastor for you
He was the pastor who was pastoring us. He shepherded us and toward us guided us Nobody else wanted to take that up and so again. Yeah, exactly that is hey You went through 60 churches. Why because you had to wander in the desert for 60 years because you're stiff necked and hard-hearted and you're very Oh, I'm a seminary and I'm doing a PhD. I know what a real pastor is and so God went okay Superstar go ahead show me Oh, it turns out there are no pastors like that because they don't exist Except in books Written by guys that were just like these pastors that you're condemning. I'll know it when I see it 100% Yeah, and even pastor kind who became our pastor I still got mad at him at the end of the day. Yep, because Yeah, you're like, oh, this is good, but it could be better Because he had his things just like you have yours and I have mine right Hobby horses the things you're really into He's a liturgical guy. He wrote a book on the mess He loves the early fathers so everything was something about the early fathers
I was into reformation stuff and he wasn't and so I was like we got to go somewhere It's like that doesn't exist my friend. It doesn't exist The reason that your professors are professors and not pastors anymore is because it didn't exist for them either correct and We would the ideal the platonic ideal as we call it Is the satanic temptation to impatience to pride to a lack of humility to not be a meek person all the things that you know be uncharitable Versus if you think about this way apply these things to your wife or husband apply these things to your to your children and then think to yourself Do I really want to be with this person or do I really want to claim these children as my own based on how I would treat these People if they were my pastor Treat your son like you would treat your pastor and see what your son thinks right yeah Yeah, treat your wife like you would treat a church musician or a deaconess well You're actually wishing death on them you really are yeah, that's the wall part. What do you Pharisees? Yeah, I wish death upon you
And so the warning and and this is what we've talked about is Why aren't there more books on spiritual warfare? I encourage everybody now when pastors say they want to write a book the first thing I say is you should write a book on spiritual warfare Like hey, you're a real pastor Right for that. I mean, there's probably just a simple opposition to the term warfare Yeah, that's too aggressive Well, modern presence military history writing history We want more of a pacifistic kind of a question you cause no offense don't lose your tax exempt status Right, but the problem is is that whether it be dying or the or the temptation is the devil or own flesh These are very aggressive attacks. I can say this from experience and from scripture and from church history You take a pass of stance towards the evil one He will be in your church Sunday And every Sunday after that until there's no church left. Yeah, you get steam roller no church of Christ your church will still be there and it will be very successful And you'll have lots of members because Trappings as Paul Harvey said if the devil ran a city it'd be the most peaceful
No crime why Because the devil would organize it in such a way that I mean, Paul Harvey taught better Special warfare In East grade I heard it on the bus. I know. I wasn't even a Christian. I'm still thinking about that. Yeah Yeah, no, he got it. He understood it better than we do. Yeah, it wouldn't be Las Vegas. It wouldn't be Stephen King's the stand It wouldn't be It would be peace. No, that's the that's the that's the Hollywood Yeah, well, that's the I'm I'm out of my mind on cocaine version of hell Las Vegas which by the way is collapsing businesses Casinos the strip club the crazy horse the famous strip club closed Ah, but they have sports teams now For now for now and the globe thing the big eye thing. Yeah, oh the yeah, whatever that's called sphere. Sorry. I'm sure Yeah Good Well go and check this out listeners viewers whatever you are again sit with it I think there's a lot to be taken from it
You're gonna find something maybe of conflict in the very last statement about Over occupation without worth things There's a quote from Don scotus talking about venial sins, but But that's medieval so yeah, whatever it is And I don't know mortal venial sins. We haven't ever actually ever really dealt too much with that Well, they're too we should probably do that Because I just kind of dismissed it, but that's probably not fair Well, we talked to actually talk about virtues vices so mortal venial Anyway, shout out to our brother in Christ Tony Romano who just sent me a picture of all my favorite authors That he has played out on his desk that he bought good for him. He does this to torment me He's a he's a vile wicked man full of bad humors and he sends me pictures of things to just torment me and I go from green to whatever is beyond green when it comes envy because he sends me such wonderful things But shout out to our brother Tony shout out to all of our listeners Who support us with their prayers especially I can feel myself at the interview prayers. I appreciate that
We appreciate that we need them more than ever. Yeah, I don't know what's happening, but the attacks are Well, and maybe they're experiencing them too, and they just can't put their finger on exactly Name it name it express it. There's a weight there Say it take it to Christ ultimately don't complain about others That encourages them to complain and opens the door to this Detemptations in take it to Christ and complain to Christ be angry and don't sin, right? Reading Precatory Psalms read Psalm 5 and 6 for example morning and evening prayers And Precatory Psalms against the evil one and those who serve him And and recognize that in this world there is no hope offered to us as Christians and in the world there is nothing but a downward Walk into disintegration and death and Individuation or as a Fransman called it a death word drift of feudal birth. There you go. Yeah, it's only Christ that draws us up It's only the sacraments that pull us up. It's only the gospel that gives us wings on the way up And so come for you come for yourself and and one another with that that one great truth the highest of all truths
and Yeah That's all I can say now It's good So if there's anything you would like us to read if there's anything um Questions especially that you would like answered We're glad to address that clearly and otherwise oh and see if I can do this today. So There we go Chaudha Fais Which means Chaudha Fais God God bless you goodbye and Chaudha Du State Dauch de Bauchet in Persian far-seedings God love you Beautiful Peace
