Hi Ricky morning, sir How are you guys doing good morning? Good brother. I'm following your socials. I see you're having fun on tour You mentioned that you know you hung out with musicians your whole life and you always wanted to tour yourself Are you enjoying it sounds like you're having a good time? I'm I mean honestly, I think it bands really don't talk about it enough about like when people follow me I'm telling honestly. What is this really like and at the stage of my career To be able to do this it is without a doubt the coolest thing I have ever done I mean, you know, I did one show just to see what it would be like and it sold out and now you know I've all done over 50 and now I'm going out for another 22 shows which include stops in Kansas City and Lincoln so I'm just really excited to places that've never been so no downside to it

1:06No, what no downside? Yeah, you hear a lot of guys you go on tour. Oh, no, no, no, no, there's lots of downside I don't I don't have the eb tour bus or anything like that. So I've got my truck And we're loading stuff in my truck and there's times that you know We've got 1300 miles between the show. So there's a lot of driving a lot of driving And that would be like, you know, they say that the work part of it is everything you do off of stage Because it's true because once I'm on stage I'm having a black But this is all part of the whole thing. You know, this is part of the you know stopping at every waffle house or cracker barrel You know and just driving and playing and you never know if it can be packed Where the people gonna be like and it's it's been so much fun Ricky Rockman is Ricky We're the two hosts here. We're around in the 80s. We're about your age and so we We know what that scene was like and we loved that time period and what do you think because I know a lot of young people are showing up I've seen more on socials a lot of people that weren't even alive during the late 80s

2:10General how they look back on it like how crazy was it we all know it was really crazy and you were in the belly of the beast Are you seeing a lot of young people wanting to know what what what what really went on All the time because what we've got mostly is like journalists talking about stuff to be nothing about about what it was like It's like me talking about you know rock and roll was great in the 50s. We used to go to hot cops and No, but the 80s was in hot. I mean, you know, I own the canals which is the morning back in at rock club of all And whatever you think it was it was back in and it was sleazy. It was dangerous But the biggest problem that we had is we didn't realize that while we were in it because you don't think about like hey I'm having the best time I'll ever have today, you know, you don't know that no and you look back and you thought you thought you Trying to remember more of that now you you knew all these bands especially the LA bands that way before they were famous and then it became Yeah, gycons

3:10You you obviously just that must be just so still so loud for you to see what they've done and whether at Compared to being on a couch or on the back doing a bunch of blow Or I would agree to all that scene. It's just did it. Do they ask you not to tell stories sometimes Um, and there's certain things that I shouldn't say but about those people. I don't really care Oh You know because who cares? Yeah, there are some little touchy stories with guns and roses. Yeah, but they have no plumbing Three weeks ago. We did a benefit. We're basically I was singing with guns and it was everybody but Axel Okay, so I'm still in touch which is really cool But it is weird like for me to go to a sporting event and hearing them play guns and roses. I'm like wow Like like yes Ricky. They're one of the biggest rock bands in the world and that still hasn't It's still weird because they're they're just my just my friends Right, and there was so many great bands in that era, you know We would see great bands that didn't have record deals all the time it could be you know

4:11Anybody it was just it was really incredible. It really really was and it was there were highs and lows Well, you know, there was the sad part about that time period especially and there was like what 20,000 bands on the streets walking around L.A From that's a rough estimate by the way and then most of those bands by far didn't make it a lot of those guys just got lost I mean you probably know a lot of those Yeah, definitely and the sad thing is like occasionally. I'll run into some of those same people right there in their 60s now And they're telling me about their demo jam. I do it. Don't get it get a job You know The show definitely talks about you know it talks about the rise But it also talks about losing everything and then you know There's parts of my life that people have absolutely no idea about that's like some pretty heavy stuff But the show is funny the show is some people say inspirational But it's been getting great reviews something tons it tickets and it's just so it's I love doing it like at this age I thought like oh, this is what I'm supposed to be doing

5:13Rick you know I'm in with this ricky rockman the tour is called one foot in the gutter What kind of a were you an alcohol alcohol like a coke addict the whole bit like most of us were Keep going keep going keep going Did you do at did you do heroin? No, I did not do heroin. Okay, but everything else yes, okay, but um, I mean to be you know I talked about it in my show that I was heavily addicted to crystal math And there was even a time there was even a time that I was a drug dealer, but I've been sober since 1988 Wow, and uh, I don't go out and not like one of those sober guys like everybody needs to stop drinking. It's like look I can't do it everybody else. I know drinks, right? You know So in all the places there we are you quit you quit in 88 before the scene was even over huh? Oh, yeah, oh, yeah, like people don't like I get people think I remember when you were like so wasted and you did this This is I'm like I did those things sober like just because you're sober doesn't mean you're still not making a really bad decision Like I and but the problem is you're having issues like oh, I was so messed up now you do stupid things and wake up in weird places like yeah, I had too much

6:22Coffee, yeah, it sounds like you can't really use it The substance becomes a little too mainstream then Ricky just quit that And there you go to the next one now in all the places that you've traveled You know all your tour and now you've seen most of the country. I assume Well, were there places that impressed you that kind of crushed your preconceived notion like you had no idea this place was going to be cool Um, well, okay, I really was surprised what when I went to Flint and Michigan Because it was like this place called a machine shop. It's like if you suck they will let you know And it started like a couple hecklers and I just ripped them to shreds and then the club it was like one of the best venues and That was really I was surprised that the Hollywood shows Hollywood people are so reserved But you know, I did one show in Hollywood sold out and now I'm playing the whiskey a go-go in July So I think every place is surprising because I you know I'm playing times like you know Kansas City, Seattle, Portland, but I'm also playing like

7:22Tick a Shaw You know or keel cook or places that I've never even heard I'm playing keel below where else was born Don't you know I'm getting to play you don't live in LA more. Don't you live in North Carolina somewhere? Yes, I did I moved you to North Carolina. I still go to LA and New York quite a bit But I LA wasn't what it was and it get you know I lived in a house where I had no place to park my motorcycle to a house that it's like Oh, here's your boat slip. I'm like, what do I do with this? You know, I love living in North Carolina Was it for a lady or you picked out North Carolina just on your own? No, no, no I grabbed them. I Took a lady with me to convince her who was from Paris and living in Vegas. It's like hey We're gonna move to Moore'sville, North Carolina. She's like, okay, but we're still here and we both love it Okay, good. All right. Oh, and you're and she's at home and you're traveling right Sometimes she goes and she's a tattoo artist. Okay, so she works and

8:22And sometimes I bring her on the road to be Mike like my my road manager because everything's really DIY every none of us that bring in my crew Having idea what we're doing, but we just we fake it and you know, and then we just play and You know, I think we're very interactive with the crowd before the show after the crowd the people to go to my shows Know my staff because they have conversations with them on cathouse Hollywood calm and It's just it's cool. It's just it's really really cool and you never know what every show is gonna be like But they've I've had a great. I haven't had a horrible time yet, but I know it's coming I knew some guys own some clubs back in the day and you know, they were just as messed up as the patrons and They still kept track of their money when you were in the cat house Who was responsible for all the cash that was coming in and how did you not lose it all or did you lose a bunch of it? Uh, I was responsible for everything And there were times when I seriously couldn't pay my staff at the end of the night

9:24So they had to come to my house to get paid cash the next day and I Mean did I save money? Oh, no, I had nothing and all of a sudden I on the biggest club I'm like what like I didn't I never thought that I'd still be selling cat house shirts I never thought that people would be interested You know when I opened the cat house I didn't know that this would be like one of the most famous rock and roll clubs in the world I had no and when gets the roses said let's play let's play let's play. I'm like, oh, okay You know, so it was you know, but when I got sober I became obsessed with business and running on my own stuff And I'm not good at designating which is one of my big faults Okay, I'm also perfectionist. That's why I want this show to be so good Ricky's going to be at knuckleheads in Kansas City on July 29th and July 30th of very next night The bourbon theater, which is a really cool place. It's still in 88. Yeah, it wasn't like then early 90s when you know the sheen kind of went away It was late 88 was still huge top, you know, I like into that. He said hope to see you at the show and you'll see you later Well, he didn't say a good luck with your little tour. Yeah I thought about that as I said that dick I wanted to lie to the guy. I'll be there Tell me when you're back east to hope to see the show you won't Not for me. I told you'll call that last week. You coming to Hershey. Yeah I found out joe koi shows four hours long I Is it really? Oh, it was three hours. I think yeah, here at least the one he did here. I heard was three hours Yeah, I don't think that's Tracy Morgan level madness. That's madness. It is madness

11:31Nobody wants three hours of comedy. You want 25, two, three hours is like, you are, I'm sorry, you're punishing people. You are. Yeah, we said somewhere. You're punishing your fans. Yeah, I like. No, I can't even find an angle where that's good. I love to be someone. You guys are comedians. Nick was one for almost 20 years, almost. And I've never understood why they think people, the comedy's not music. No, music, even music, even music can get old, but not, I'm using a two and a half hour conscience can be pretty good. Can be long. No, a lot of comedians, I think, have a good thing. It's exhausting. I've got the memo that they think they're, yeah. Everybody's, attention span has shortened. Especially, especially in comedy. Look at movies. They don't make really long movies anymore. But comedy has never been a long-term thing. No, it was your Judd Appetale. No, because you like, oh, you're right Nick, yeah. You're standing like you're, you're, you're thinking your mind is engaged while you're listening to comedy. Like, you can't do three hours, though, a lot of me.

12:33Yeah, music is, is rolls over you. You can handle that. Are you so much of a dopamine rush that you just got to keep it going? I don't know. I mean, you could probably take the audience, it like halfway through, replace them with mannequins and that they wouldn't even know. I don't get it. Go ahead and even know. And he just, it's all hard for talking. Do these kind of shows. Bert showed less forever. Yeah, when, when we went to see Bert last, last winner in Lincoln, he was, with his openers and him, it was close to three hours. It was like 245, and he was on stage for over two hours. It gets to the point where you can't laugh that long. No, they're doing it for themselves. It's physically impossible. Yeah, it's 100% for yourself. Yeah, they're doing the show for them. Well, he, and Bert, they are. They are. I'm just going to get it. He admitted, he's like, I'm just kind of up here, effing around at this point. He's like, I'm off my script a long time ago. Well, yeah, please leave. Yeah. Yeah. Please release your hostages. Thank you. And that's coming from a comedian. Yes. And there's no, I don't understand that I never will.

13:35Well, some people would do it. A lot of times they just want more of the night, take it up at an event and be like, oh, they want a two hour standup show. I'm like, I'm not doing that. Oh, yeah. Well, you don't want that. Nobody wants that. Yeah. You don't want that. I think you want that way. You don't want that way. You don't want that way. You don't want that way. You don't want that way. You don't want that way. That's an hour and a half is perfect. That's why club shows three hour and a half. That's it. Nope. But you can't have like an hour and a half. And then it... And you mentioned it. Austin, the key is music is different because it flows over you and that's a different situation. In comedy, you've got to stay engaged and listen to the jokes, and pay attention, your mind is engaged and screwed up. Yeah. And then after that it becomes work, then you're in a classroom. Right. That's why we don't do four hours of comedy on this show. Because there's too much. There's four hours, but it's the show, sure! There's four hours! We package a serious subject. And I'll give I'll even give concerts this at least at concerts a lot of times you're up and down You're sitting yeah, and then maybe you're standing up and then they play a slow song or then you know That's true when you're watching comedy you're sitting right in the same chair

14:37Not gonna happen for that. Well, it gets uncomfortable and then you have Physically uncomfortable after a while and then you're I remember when you're just insane you become an insane Always You're the Joker. Yeah, when I hear about people who listen to the podcast from front to back Well, they they're also segments the podcast I don't listen to the segment and I love those people by the way, but there's so much a 20 minutes, man We don't design this show to be consumed entirely Yeah, well the audience isn't like stuck in a chair in a dark room. That's it feels awkward to leave That's right. There's a whole different thing. You're right there and you can all different things Yeah, you can be doing something else while you're listening to them. I remember distinctly cable guy was obviously a huge star at this point But he came back to do a show at the funny bone. It's the last funny bone And we were out there hanging out with him and we were all sitting in the crowd and he did a guest set there He did a guest show that night to try out some new stuff and he kept going on and on him Todd and I we just got we I was with you. Yeah, we walked out while he was still on stage Okay, Larry and a club it's at a club we walked out but everybody knows like comics that

15:44You want to leave the audience wanting more. Yeah, not exhausted From See another real love and a kill Like after you three hours of imprisonment. No, I think once they get rolling though that that thought disappears It's selfish. Yeah, it's it's it's vanity. You can feel it with shows over two if it's gone on too long Yeah, you can't oh, they're leaving then like people were trying to escape when Tracy Morgan did like two and a half hours Did you try to have hours really yeah Crazy man, where was that the bone? Yeah, and when you open up for him too. Yeah, and then he did two and a half hours Yeah, there's a full show. We had a guy he had a guy there. They did two and a half hours The serve the servers are like kill me like Like everyone everyone wants to die except Tracy Morgan was like I'm getting your limit. I have sex with the C-shut chin tonight That's like yeah, dude. We get it You can see Austin tonight. You won't yeah, he's not gonna do three hours
