We welcome in, Charlie Goldsmith. Charlie, the reds are in Minneapolis tonight. A start for Brandon Williamson with additional meaning. Please paint a homecoming picture. And is it the last one out of Tri-Mont, Minnesota? Turn off the lights tonight. Williamson is from Southern Minnesota, town of 700. Two and a half hours away from everything. No stoplights. To form a high school, they merge with three towns from around the neighborhood. Everybody knows everybody, and it sounds like everyone from Tri-Mont is pulling into the target field area right now. And I wonder if Williamson fans outweigh a sparse twins crowd at this game. That's a great question based on the weather tonight. Let's flip the hitting.

4:04The reds have taken a creative approach to game preparation with hitters. Explain the foam balls concept. The reds, we've all seen it, have struggled with fastballs. So what do you do? They've taken a very hyper-specific approach to their on field batting practice in a way that I haven't seen them in six, seven years. At least multiple hitting coaches try to be this creative with the drill. They've used, especially in their early work, a lot of foam baseballs out of the pitching machine. That lets you work on a few things. High and inside fastballs. If you swing it too many of those with a real baseball, your hands will start ringing, and you don't keep doing that. So you can get a lot of reps in there. Also, it's a way when you face pitchers with a lead sinker spin and cutter spin. The seams in those foam baseballs, kind of like a whiffle ball, hyper-exaggerates the spin. She can really challenge yourself. And challenging these guys has been the key day and took some swings the other day against pitches.

5:05And they were standing three feet in front of the plate. So they're trying different stuff to get this offense going. Charlie, you've been around all these young guys that have come up in various waves in recent years. I wonder, what is it about Sal Stewart that stands out that impresses you the most? It's got to be confidence. Like, Sal knew he was going to do this, you know, from the first time I talked to him. I mean, he was 19 years old. And kind of the underrated part, we forget about the Sal Stewart story is there were a lot of knocks on his draft resume. You know, it's draft season right now and we think about stuff like this, you know, the guy who doesn't have great size, the guy who doesn't have great speed, the guy he always talk about the negatives about leading up in the pre-jab process. That was Sal in a lot of ways how he was viewed and he was like, no, I'm great. You know, the people around him, the big leakers in his camps, you know, gave him that confidence as well. And he just decided that he was going to prove everybody wrong. And you see that passion, fire and confidence with every swing even when he's down.

6:08Even when he is too straight, that gear that he has is just different. And it's not surprising to him at all. And honestly, the rest of known this kid for a while, they've been kind of calling this for years. I remember when he was in high A, you know, people down there were saying, Sal's next, he's coming and he has done everything they expected. Keep Brian Hays is a guy who I remember when they traded for him. Nick Crawl talking about how they like some of the underlying metrics and thought there was more to bring out of him. We talked about that during the off season. They've clearly tried some things. I think it's pretty wild. His launch angle a year ago was eight and a half. And this year it's 25.9. Nothing obviously has worked. What do you make of this situation? Where does this situation go from here? Boy, it's a tough situation for the Reds to be in. They strongly believed that Brian Hays was one adjustment away from being back to the hitter he was in 2023, which was solid, which was above league average.

7:09The numbers they probably didn't hope would go to that extreme, but the idea was raise the launch angle. Hays has always been a guy who can make contact with the baseball. That's kind of been a detriment sometimes. Actually, the average exit velocities have always been solid. He just buried pitches into the ground. So it's like, hey, if you can get them all up. But the problem is, while there's average exit velocities are high, he's not barreling the ball. So like, if you're a pitcher throwing 94, like give a decent velocity, but you're not going to swing a mist like that. And if you think of it going the other way, the ball off to the back to Brian, hey, like on average it's okay, but he's not doing anything that can kind of make a defender mist. And the question is whether or not he'll keep hitting the ball this hard. That will probably get luckier than he's been. He has had some bad luck. But so far, he made this huge change, and there's no evidence to suggest that this change is working right now. Charlie, what is the, I guess I can't give you a scale, but what is the level of concern with this outfield situation across the board

8:16and finding answers and solutions there? It's roulette. It's bingo. It's moving pieces constantly in a major work in progress. Like in the offseason, the plan was written in Sharpie, Freedom and Center Martain. Right? Marta's obviously already gone. And the next domino to fall would be the Reds Need PJ to get going defensively, even more than they need him to get going offensively. I still do think Freedol is going to get on base that he's going to see pitches better than he has been and put the ball in play. Kind of, you know, not doing damage and pulling the ball with line drives like he has in the past. But I still think he'll rack up some hits. But the Reds are giving themselves, it has to be deliberately. It isn't deliberately. A lot of outs to move Freedol to left. They're having Marta play center in AAA. Terror for Ancona specifically has left the door open for Re time playing center with TJ and left on certain days. I asked, could you do that?

9:16And Tito said, well, maybe. And he said they consider that. They have conversations about that. Same thing when I asked about Will Benson a few weeks ago. So they've left doors open there. TJ hasn't made the place he needs to. Now he could be a good left field. We've seen that in spurts. But the problem is you need more from that. If he's playing left field, so. And then you've got the Dan Louisville Hector Rodriguez is ready to help this team offensively. But defense, you know, he's got as much to prove defensively as any prospect who's come up through this system in a while. He can rate, but can he catch? So they've got a lot of guys in a similar bucket. And you know, when these things settle, who flows to the top? Charlie Goldsmith, check it in a couple more minutes. Let's flip the script, go Bengals. You've written this week. Charlie's chalkboard about the Golden Seven in reference to Al Golden and seven defensive players that matter in the first round. Charlie, walk us through the two corners and what you like and which one you like more and for what reason.

10:16I prefer Jamal McCoy, the corner out of Tennessee. And that probably isn't the consensus opinion around kind of the draft analyst community. He can be the field, he can be field the most like a Bengals. You know, like it or not, we hear the Bengals after they picked these guys in the first round recently. They love saying things like, well, if it weren't for this, he would have gone much higher. With McCoy, that's his torn ACL. He does have true top five upside. He's sticking it to fluidity, his speed, the way he turned in man coverage. I think it's something they're going to love. The lane is a, out of LSU is a computer generated number 10 picked in the draft. If you put it in, the calculator spits out a guy who does a lot of things pretty well. At a premium position, he was a very quiet player at LSU last year, which is exactly what you want from a corner. Betty knows what he's doing. Maybe offers you a bit of a versatility, but doesn't have the same man to man.

11:18You know, just pure, I'm going to take over this match up like I think McCoy might. The board will shape kind of what the decision the Bengals end up making is there are seven players who matter. I think there's a real chance just one who could be left on the board. Maybe two or three, and that'd be a good thing for the Bengals. And maybe none, but I don't think it goes there, but that is a possibility as well. So thinking of that group of seven and tracking that group will be the thing to do on draft day. Charlie, how and when do they address linebacker and how dicey is that situation in your mind? The Bengals, the beauty of the second round of this draft is it's going to give the Bengals a real truth serum about the Metrius night and Barrett Carter. Because I've looked at this class on, you know, they put their second round pick. They're going to tell you we actually think these guys can really start or things went so poorly that we're giving up on one of them. That's the way this class shakes out. And I think they probably would lean this way at the board when a certain way because it had how much I didn't like, you know, Carter and Knight last year with just their production.

12:25I think CJ Allen, a linebacker out of Georgia, feels so much like a Bengal. He's almost the Jordan battle of linebackers. Then a battle hasn't had a huge feeling. But remember, they put red star literally by his name after the interview. Allen reminds me a lot of that. And then you've got Jacob Rodriguez and Jake Golday, guys who you could also pick in the second round. If you let the second round go without addressing linebacker, then I'm looking at this list like you are just getting a role playing combo linebacker to be versatile, which is fine. But that's not a guy challenging one of your starters. Now, the problem, though, also is that I adore this class from the second round to edge and slot corner. So you are giving up the possibility of getting these any one of those guys or taking a huge swing with a defensive tackle like Peter was your killer back. So you are giving all that up if you pigeonhole yourself at linebacker. You might need to do that, but that to me, even more than round one, that pressure point is the most fascinating part of their draw stretch.
