#331 The Father Was Already Running Before the Speech Was Ready
About this episode
If you've ever felt like confession is an audition and prayer is a performance review — this episode is for you. Three repair dynamics of Luke 15. One truth: the father was already running before the speech was ready.
Most high-capacity humans approach return — to relationships, to God, to themselves — the same way they approach everything else. They prepare. They calibrate the remorse to what they believe is required. They negotiate themselves down to a lower position before anyone asks them to. Confession becomes audition. Prayer becomes performance review.
This episode sits with all three repair dynamics of Luke 15 — the son who rehearsed his return, the father who ran before the performance of remorse was complete, and the older brother whose repair with his brother is never recorded. And it speaks from the inside of each one.
In this episode you'll sit with:
- Why high-capacity humans turn even returning to God into a transaction — and what that posture costs
- What it means that the father saw his son while he was still a great way off — and was already running before the speech landed
- The older brother's wound: standing beside everything that was his and treating it as something he still had to earn
- The repair that begins when you receive what you were already given — at the speed you can
- What it feels like to be met, not evaluated
Today's Micro Recalibration:
Notice the posture your body holds when you think about being received. Is it the posture of someone arriving home? Or someone preparing for an interview? The father was already running before the speech was ready. I don't have to earn what I was already given.

There's something that happens when you've spent your whole life Performing for an audience you believed was watching you show up you earn you don't leave You certainly don't come back empty handed and then one day in a moment of failure in a season where the thing you were building Fell apart you realize you've been rehearsing your return speech to someone who is never going to require it That's the story most of us were never told about the parable of the prodigal son We were told about the son who left about the waste about the far country But the part that undoes me every time is the father He was all ready running before the speech was ready He saw his son while his son was still a great way off While the words were still rehearsed in his mouth While the apology was still waiting to determine whether it would be good enough
The father didn't wait to evaluate the speech He ran and what I want to sit with today at the close of a week about repair is what it means to be met on the way back Instead of evaluated when you arrived This is vertical alignment Sunday is where the horizontal work we do with each other finds its source Because the way we repair with the people in our lives flows from what we believe at an identity level About whether we are safe to return Welcome back or welcome to the recalibration This week we walked all the way through repair and today we closed the week at the source I'm Julie Holly researcher coach and founder of the identity level recalibration pathway ILR is a psychology backed nervous system aligned faith rooted approach to transformation that begins at identity not behavior
These Sunday episodes flow from my personal faith in Jesus Because for me real alignment doesn't happen apart from the one who authored identity itself I often call this vertical alignment. It's not performative. It's not about religion It's about walking with the sovereign who already sees you knows you and calls you forward Whether you are faith-filled faith curious or simply here because you're longing for a deeper truer way of being you're welcome in this place After all you cannot outperform a belief that God is waiting to evaluate you rather than running toward you If this episode lands for you will you share it today? Not just the podcast this episode specifically because someone in your life is still rehearsing a speech to someone who is already running and they need to know
Here's what I want you to notice When you think about approaching God or returning to something you believe in or even re-entering a space of faith after a season of drift or doubt What is the posture your body takes? Is it the posture of someone who is arriving or is it the posture of someone who is preparing for an interview Because for many high capacity humans People who've built their lives on earning achieving demonstrating competence before they belong Confession feels like an audition Prayer becomes a performance review Returning after a failure becomes a negotiation You rehearse what you'll say you calibrate to the level of remorse to match what you imagine is required You make yourself no longer a son or a daughter You prepare the speech for the servants position you believe you've earned And all of it is preparation for an evaluation that was never going to happen
Let's stay with the story There are three repair dynamics in Luke chapter 15 that most people only teach as one the son He left He wasted what he'd been given He came to himself in the far country, which is its own kind of repair The moment you stop running from the truth about where you are And then he did what most high capacity humans do he prepared He practiced what he would say he calculated what he deserved He structured his return as a negotiation I am no more worthy to be called your son make me as one of your hired servants He was going to earn his way back at a lower rate, but earn it nonetheless He was still making it a transaction Then we have the father He saw him while he was still yet a great way all of which meant he had been looking
He had compassion He ran He fell on his son's neck and kissed him Before a word of the speech was delivered Before the performance of remorse was complete Before anything had been earned back The son began the speech anyway because the nervous system doesn't update that quickly And the father interrupted it Not with evaluation With a robe With a ring With a feast The son had prepared to return as a servant The father restored him as a son before the negotiation could begin And here's what I want you to sit with The father's running was not a reward for the son's remorse It was the revelation of the father's nature The running was already in him It was waiting for the return Not waiting to evaluate whether the return was worthy
Just waiting Finally, we have the older brother We can't close Sunday without naming him He was the one who never left Who served faithfully Who did not waste Who stayed And when his brother returned and the feast began He stood outside His repair with his brother is never recorded in the story We don't know if it happened What we know is that the father came out to meet him too Intreated him, told him Son, thou art ever with me and all I have is thine The older brother's wound was not that he didn't receive the feast It was that he had been standing beside everything that was his And treating it as something he still had to earn He'd never left the far country He'd just just brought the far country home with him And called it faithfulness
If you are the one who stayed Who worked Who served Who did not leave The father came out to you too The feast was always also yours I need to say something here that I can only say from experience My father died unexpectedly ten and a half years ago And what I carry from that relationship is not the absence It's the memory of being met Of what it feels like when someone runs toward you Before your speech is finished Before you've proven you've deserved the welcome Before you've performed enough remorse to justify the embrace That's what I know about the father in Luke 15 Not from theology, from experience Being met on the way back is different from earning your way back Everything in your body knows the difference between those two things
The sovereign is not waiting to evaluate your return He is watching for it And he is already running before the speech was ready Here's your recalibration for today Wherever you are in the return Whether you're in the far country and you've just come to yourself Whether you're on the road back rehearsing what you'll say Whether you've been the one who stayed and wondered why it never felt like enough Notice the posture your body holds when you think about being received Is it the posture of someone arriving home Or the posture of someone preparing for an interview You don't have to resolve that today You just have to let it be a real question The father was already running before this speech was ready I don't have to earn what was already given Let that land wherever it needs to at whatever speed it can
The nervous system doesn't update in one Sunday That's okay He's not waiting for the update to run toward you Friend this week we walked the full pathway of repair We named the replay loop We put down the shame that made conflict feel like evidence of failure We stopped over explaining We learned to apologize without groveling And receive forgiveness without performing remorse We let the nervous system trust the evidence Rather than anticipate the catastrophe We held the unnamed generational distances With more understanding than we had before And now we close the week here At the place where the returning is not evaluated but celebrated Whatever you are returning from A failure a season of drift A version of yourself you've been trying to put down A relationship with God or faith that went quiet for reasons
You're still making sense of The running was already happening before you knew you were on your way back You were seen while you were still a great way off The speech was never required The row was always waiting The feast was always prepared And if you're the one who stayed If the staying has started to feel like it's costing you something If faithfulness has quietly become a burden rather than a belonging That's not a sign you've lost your faith That's the older brother's wound And the father came out to you too Receive that at the speed you can Not at a pace to be ashamed of If you're new here make sure you follow or subscribe So the recalibration shows up for you every week And if you've been here will you share this episode today Specifically today's Because someone you know is still preparing a speech to someone who's already running
If this week has been meaningful to you Will you please leave an honest rating or review It's how the people who are still in the far country find their way here And if you're ready to walk this pathway with more direct support I'd love to explore that with you The link to schedule a recalibration conversation is in the show notes This is a daily journey and you're exactly where you need to be today
