上杉 謙信（うえすぎ けんしん） / 上杉 輝虎（うえすぎ てるとら）（享禄3年1月21日（1530年2月18日）- 天正6年3月13日（1578年4月19日））は、戦国時代の越後国（現在の新潟県上越市）の武将・戦国大名。後世、越後の虎や越後の龍、越後の獅子、軍神と称される。
自分を捨て去って必死の境地に入ると、かえって物事がうまくすすむことがある。地位や名誉も捨てる覚悟が大事だということを、この言葉は教えてくれる。
