Welcome to NASA Daily, where we bring you all of NASA's previous day's proceedings in four minutes or less. In today's episode, we bring you NASA's activities for April 5, 2026. NASA's Artemis II crew continues its journey toward the moon aboard the Orion spacecraft, traveling more than two-thirds of the distance from Earth. Astronauts Reed Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen are preparing for a lunar flyby scheduled for April 6, while carrying out deep space operations and system checks. On flight day 5, about 65,000 miles from the moon, the crew completed a full evaluation of the Orion crew's survival system suits. The astronauts performed suit pressurization, leak checks, mobility assessments, and simulated operational tasks to verify performance in microgravity and emergency conditions such as cabin depressurization.
The suits are designed to provide life support, thermal protection, and communication capabilities during critical phases of flight. The crew received a message from Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke linking the mission to earlier lunar exploration. Mission control also delivered the final set of 30 lunar science targets, including major features such as the Orientali Basin and Hurtsprung Basin, which will be photographed and studied during the flyby. Later, the astronauts completed a 17.5-second trajectory correction burn, refining Orion's path and guiding the spacecraft into the moon's gravitational sphere of influence. This transition marks the beginning of lunar gravity's dominant effect on the spacecraft's trajectory. The mission is expected to surpass the Apollo 13 distance record, making it the farthest humans have traveled from Earth. During the flyby, the crew will conduct about six hours of lunar observations, experience a temporary communications blackout while passing behind the moon, witness Earthrise and Earthset and observe a solar eclipse from deep space.
At the mission, the crew continues daily exercise, system monitoring, and scientific operations while engineers confirm spacecraft performance, with all systems currently reported as healthy as Artemis II approaches its closest lunar phase.
