52. . . Who knows what evil looks in the hearts of men? The shadow knows. The shadow has one great defense against the perils encountered and tracking down criminals.
09His ability to become invisible. I will hear how he puts this ability to use in just a moment. But first, I want to tell you about a tire that has two great defenses against the two most common perils that threaten every mover. Skids and blowouts. This tire is the new good rich safety silver towel. And its first line of defense is the life saver tread. The tread that sweeps wet road so dry, you can light a match on its track. Gives you the quickest non-skid stops you've ever had. And its second great life-saving feature is the famous golden ply that provides motorists with scientific protection against dangerous high-speed blowouts. Give yourself and your family this vital double protection. Ride on good rich safety silver towel. The shadow, Lamont Cranston, a man of wealth, a student of science and a master of other people's minds, devotes light to writing wrongs, protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty.
16Cranston is known to criminals as the shadow. Never seen, only heard, his true identity is known only to his friend and companion, the lovely Margoly. Today's story, fountain of death. Lamont Cranston, please drive more slowly. All right, Margo. Lamont, what's this all about? Her Margo, I'll tell you. We're on our way to prevent a murder. Murder? Who's murder? That's just it. I don't know. Lamont Cranston, what are you talking about? Twenty minutes ago, I got a letter telling me that a murder was about to be committed. The note was signed, Dr. Anna Marla. Anna Marla? Who's that? Dr. Marla is one of the greatest research workers in medicine this world has ever known. The last time I met her was in Europe. And if ever there was a woman with a love of mankind in her soul, it's Anna Marla. It was very good of you to come here Mr. Cranston and you too, Mrs. Lane.
25You were very glad to come, Dr. Marla. But you'll let us admit it, Dr. Marla. No, no, please, my friend. It is so little time that you must listen to me. All right. I'll send for you, because you will learn what to drink in the courage to stand by me. Anything you want, Dr. Marla. You have not asked why I am in America. I will tell you. It is because there are powers in Europe who think only in terms of force and hate, who would stop my experiment, Dr. Cranston. Really helps me protect me while I work. That's why Mrs. Lane and I are here. In my letter, I said that a murder was to be committed tonight, as a woman who is to be murdered this year in the very next room. Well, then let's go in. No, no, don't get excited. It is murdered too enough, but the old age is the murderer. The woman is 95 years old. 95 years old? Yeah. Why? I'm afraid I don't understand. What can I do? You can help me perform on the editing.
26Did you say, Miracle? If you and Mrs. Lane will come this way. Go ahead, model. You see, she is dying. This is so pitiful. She is treating her last. Yes. Come, we will go close to her. She's grown and tried to open your eyes. It is I, your friend, Dr. Marla. Dr. Marla? No, it is I. Here is my hand. Oh, Dr. Marla. I know I'm old and my time is coming. I did not want to die. No, no, you must not die. No, no, you must listen to me. I tell you, I don't want to die. You must tell me. Here, my friend, I will help you. Oh, you are so weak, you must not speak again. You must likewise leave while I get my instruments.
31No, come, Mr. Constantine. He is inside the room. You will help me. You will help me. Well, you saw the woman. You saw she is dying, of course. Dr. Marla, what can you possibly do for her? That is what I wanted you to hear and see. For many years I have worked in the laboratory, in an attempt to discover the true nature of the age. And while experimenting with many generations of white mice, I have made a strange discovery, a discovery which, oh, it costs beyond all understanding. I must, that quickly or she will be gone. While working on the little creatures, I discovered that when any organism has lived its full span of years, the cells within the body become aged worn. Now I have discovered that by injecting an extract of the tissues of the...
31Oh, she's dying, quickly my instrument case, come. Ah, I promised her. I must do it, I must. Hurry, she's dying. Oh, that's the hypothermic. My hands take tremble so. Yeah, I'll help Dr. Marla. No, they'll get quit. You'll see that the plants don't so clean. Now let it give this old woman a little more of life. Oh, my hands, they must be sure. No, no, no, she must live only a few seconds more until... ...a bear. They need it into her arm. Now she's told she will not feel pain. Ah, now it is done. Ah, no, no, it will never work. Or, Mr. Cranston, what have I done? My experiment, foolishness. The reaction of the mice' own idea, this is my own hope. I should never have done this to the old woman.
32A pulse. It's almost gone. Oh, also then forgive me. And your deaths do not hurt me. Oh, Dr. Marla. Look, she's not dead. Not dead. Marla's right, she's not dead. Listen to her. Look at her. Her skin was old and wrinkled. Now look, the colors coming back into her eyes. They're opening. She seems to be growing younger. Younger. Just Marla. I... I feel better. Oh, Dr. Marla. Dr. Marla. Dr. Marla. Look at her. She's sitting up in the bed. She's alive, healthy. Marth. It's a miracle. Dr. Marla. Oh, I feel it if I'm... ...an younger. Oh, look at my arms. They're warm alive. I might take a... I feel them round and full. Like it were years ago. But you've made me young, Dr. Marla. Young. Young.
36Three days now since I restored that woman's shoes. I have conquered age. Conquered age. May I come in, Dr. Marla? Oh. May I follow you, Dr. Marla? Who are you? My name is Colin. Colin? I'm flattered. I see that I'm not entirely unknown. You followed me? I was on the same ship. Oh, but why? I am an old woman. What do you want of me? It is not I. It is the state. There's sent you. The state sent me. You work. It belongs to the state. But I am here and America. I am free. I repeat. You work belongs to the state. What do you want of me? The bottle of liquid. Be quick. I advise you not to be difficult, Dr. Marla. The liquid you used on that old lady, Mrs. Cronin. Oh. You heard what I did for her? Yes, I heard of your medical, Dr. Marla. And now the liquid. Give it to me. Why do you point that gun at me? It is nearly to impress upon you to what extent I will go to get the fluid.
37What good will the liquid do you? Not me. The state. What the solution is not yet perfected. Perfected enough, our chemists will be able to make huge quantities. What will you do? With this in our position, the state will have an army of men who will be young like gods forever. So just supreme, and I will be the leader. Oh, no! Youth everlasting youth, an army invincible. An army without end sweeping the world. But you cannot make men young to kill. Make them young to live. My own regiment first. And then, then, all the state. Oh, no, no. It cannot do that. My work. It has been to preserve life. Not kill and destroy. Oh, give it back away. The bottle. Give it back to me. You will stay away from here. No, give Dr. Patel. What is it, Kitty? The great Dr. Anna Mahler. She has committed suicide.
44Dr. Mahler. Dr. Mahler. Strange she doesn't answer. She's always in a laboratory. Dr. Mahler. Dr. Mahler. Dr. Mahler. Dr. Mahler would. Dr. Dr. Who did this to you? This is Cranston. I'm on Cranston. Dr. Cain speak. Tell me who did this to you. Yes, I'm listening. You took, you took liquid. Who took it? Who? Soldiers. Army. You are men. Who shot you, doctor? Colin followed me across the ocean. And once they would liquid for invincible army. Soldiers. Yes. Dr. Mahler. You discovered a miracle of life.
44And he gave you death in exchange for it. Rest well, Dr. Mahler. I swear this to you. Before Colin can use what he took from you for soldiers, Army's war, he will meet the shadow. There's more thrilling action on the way and act two of the shadow's adventure. In the meantime, motorists, have you ever thought of what speed danger takes the driver's seat in your car? The shadow knows. The minute you hit over 40 miles an hour, your chances of a serious accident grow by leaps and bounds. Yes. Danger begins at 40. Play safe. Slow down.
45But motorists, if roads are wet and slippery, can you slow down in time? Will your car skip, spin, swear? Don't take chances. Equip your car now with a new Goodrich safety silver town tire. Remember, this new silver town is the only tire that has the life saver tread with its amazing road-drying action. Like a battery of windshield wipers, the life saver tread sweeps the water right and left. Versus it out through the deep drainage groove. Leaves the track so dry, you can actually light a match on it. And when the tire leaves the track that dry, you can depend on it that it will stop you quicker, safer on a wet pavement than you've ever stopped before. And remember, when you ride on silver towns, you get still another life-saving feature. The famous golden ply to protect you against high-speed blowouts. The Goodrich Silver Towns are yours at no extra cost.
55Mr. Grandston, I never heard of any guy called Gorlin. I neither has anyone else on the paper. Okay, Fred. Thanks. Goodbye. Come along. Check me again. Le Mata, you sure you heard the name us? Yes, yes, I'm positive. Gorlin. Gorlin. Name has been ringing in my head every minute since the dying Dr. Mala whispered. Gorlin is some place in this town, and by all that's holy I'm going to get him. But you've been trying for hours to locate someone who's heard of him. Oh, the march you've tried everywhere. No one has even heard of him. But he does exist. He killed Dr. Mala. Her own lip said so. Marco, I've got to get my hands on this doctor. I've got to get him on Marlon. It isn't the doctor's murder alone I'm concerned with. I've got to prevent his using that discovery of hers to create huge armies. Armies of old men made young, and young men always young. I've got to prevent that. Well, it sounds very noble, doesn't it? If five hours have gone by, I haven't got the slightest idea who, oh, where the man is, it's... Hello, sir. Hello. Hello, is this Lamont Grandston?
57Yes, this is Grandston. Well, my name's Tom Brady, Mr. Grandston. I don't think you would know me. Yes, I know who you are, Brady. Foreign correspondent on the examiner. Yeah, that's right. The reason I call you, Grandston, is that I just got down to the paper. You're telling me that you're looking for a man named Golan, is that right? Yes, yes I am. Do you know him? Well, to tell you the truth, Mr. Grandston. Golan is an exactly the kind of fellow I'd admit to being my friend. Do you know where to reach him, Brady? No, not exactly, but I saw him coming out of a travel agency about an hour ago. There's a boat setting for Europe tonight, Golan's on it. He had a handbag in his hand, and a going away looking his eye. Now, there's anything else I can tell you? You've told me, Pettie. Thanks, and good night. Lamont, you found him. Muggle, quick. The newspaper. What ships are sailing tonight? There aren't any boat sailing to Europe tonight. Muggle, don't talk nonsense. Give me that paper. There must be at least half a dozen boat sailing. Lamont, if you listen to me, you haven't seen tonight's paper, but I have. The ship load is there striking. No ships are sailing.
57I can't understand this. When what Brady said, Golan must be trying to skip the country. Oh, Lamont, please don't look like that. You've tried everything. You've done all you can. That isn't enough, Muggle. I've got to get him. If he gets to Europe with that bottle of liquid, I fail so completely that any good I might have been able to do in my life up to now. It's why I clean off asleep. And I'm not going to pale Muggle. But Golan can't fail tonight, Lamont. How do I know he isn't going to some other city in sailing for me? Oh, because he had no reason to. As far as he concerned, no one's after him. Oh, stop worrying, Lamont. It's not time yet. There's tomorrow. He can't get away tonight. Not unless he hires the plane and flies the ocean. I don't think he'll do that. Muggle, wait a minute. He doesn't have to hire a plane. Not a bit of it. What are you talking about? The new giant clipper ship. It's flying to Europe tonight. Quick Muggle, we shall car outside. Yes, a lot. We've got 15 minutes to get to the airport. We can't possibly make it. It's 10 miles. We will make it. We've got two. That murdering Devon Golan has a rendezvous with a shadow. And I must try and keep it.
57Lamont, the clipper ship is still here. Let's go, Muggle. Come. Hurry, Muggle. Hurry. We've got to make it. How soon is she going? Right away. Muggle, what are you going to do? I'm getting on board, Muggle. What if he has to board? There's no time to find out. Have to take a chance. There's no time to find out. There's no time to find out. There's no time to find out. Have to take a chance. There's no time to find out. We've got to make it. Got to be done. Goodbye. Wish me a lot, Muggle. Thank you, Muggle. You just made it, sir. I beg your pardon, shoot. At your service, sir. Is there a passenger on board by the name of Golan? Yes, sir. Mr. Golan is in cabin three on the corner to the left, sir. I see. Thank you, shoot. Hey, who is it? Who is that?
57They're all right. I'm coming. Yes, yes, yes. Nobody here. I'm done. Well, I can't do it. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I can have a good rest now. And tomorrow... Where is the liquid, Golan? Who said that? Who spoke? Nobody in the cabin. And why did I hear? Where is the liquid? Must have thought that myself. The liquid. My suitcase. My seat. If the bottle is broken.
57No, quite safe. You sound good in my ears. In a few hours. In a few hours, what, Golan? Why don't you answer? In a few hours, what, Golan? Who? Who speaks? I am the shadow. There's no one in the room. Where? Who? I will you not to see me, Golan. Will? Will? There is no will stronger than mine. And yet I see you, Golan. But to you, I am but a voice. Yes, I do hear you. Who are you? The shadow that comes between civilization and those who were destroyed. You laugh, Golan. Yes, I laugh. I laugh. You think I'm afraid of a voice?
58What can a voice do? It has made you reveal the hiding place of the liquid. Oh, you know that? I know of your bullet that killed Dr. Marla. She was an enemy of this state. No, Golan. She was a woman who had devoted her life to the good of man. You have talked enough. What do you want? The bottle of liquid in your hand. Well, why don't you take it from me? You will give it to me. Will? I hope you would like this. The bullets in that gun won't help you this time, Golan. The room is small. I stand before the door and shoot around the walls. Where would you be then, shadow? Don't press that trigger, Golan. So you're like other men. You are afraid to die. The walls of the cabin are thin. Press that trigger and the bullets won't reach me. They'll reach the tanks of gasoline. Yes, that's true. You had forgotten you were five thousand feet up in the air. Hadn't you, Golan? And now, give me the bottle.
00How can I hide what I cannot see? Well, I'm a man of the army. I know that sometimes the retreat is as good as to advance. I choose to retreat. Will you join me? What do you mean? Join me. Join me. You, with your power, hypnosis that hides you from human eyes. I, with this elixir of youth, between us, we can hold Europe and all the world in our hands. Shadow, join me. My answer is, give me that bottle, Golan. It won't do you any good. Why'd you say that? Because, with the liquid or without the power of everlasting youth, is mine. What do you mean? A few hours before leaving, I had the poor lamented Dr. Marles discovery analyzed. The ingredients of the liquid were remarkably simple. I could give you the bottle, but the formula remains in my head. So you see, my mysterious friend, you have no choice. You must join me. You're silent, right?
01So we will drink to the future. The future of might and power and glory. Your glass, Mr. Shadow. I will set it here and mine here, or quite friendly. You will find this one most excellent. And now, my glass. So, now, lift your glass. We will drink. Feel silent. You will not join me. You are completely defeated, eh, Shadow? Very well, I, I drink a lot. Ah, good wine, Shadow. It is a pity you do not drink. The pity is for you, Garland. For me, but I drink. But what? Did you drink? I drank wine. You thought you pumped the little bottle very cleverly, didn't you? I do not know what you're saying. I am saying that as you poured the wine for me, the other liquid joined it in the glass.
02Dr. Marles liquid. I'll clever of you to see that. There are such a large dose of the rejuvenation liquid. It might have been most unfortunate for you. You should be very happy you did not drink. But you drank? Huh? You didn't see my hand reverse the glasses. With this? No. No, you lie. Smell the glass you drank from. No, you lie. I did not drink the liquid. I have. Kill you. Where are you? I will kill you, I will. Impossible. Now you know I spoke the truth. Oh, no. I am all right. I must be all right. My destiny to lead great armies. No. No, you are wrong, Shadow. I suddenly feel stronger. Where you see I am always victorious, Mr. Shadow. We shall see, Colin. What's happening to me? My head is suddenly thin.
02That is the liquid beginning its work. No, it can't be. You should see your face, Colin. It's growing round, younger, like that of a young man. No, no, no. And it will grow even younger as the second stick by until you become a 16-year-old. Then a small boy, then a baby. And finally, be part from this earth. Do you hear me, Colin? You will vanish from this earth. No, no, you lie. You look about 16 now, Colin. I thought I won't die this way. I won't. Don't over that window, you fool. I do my own death, Shadow. I do my own death. Ah! I'm still waiting for you to finish the story, Ramon. Would you rather hear me play, Margot? It's really much more interesting. No, the story first seems. Well, really nothing more to tell. Colin was killed when he leaped from the window of the plane. It must have been a horrible experience, Lamon.
03But did he really drink the rejuvenation liquid? However, I did fill his drink with a few drops of this harmless stimulant that I hadn't vile in my pocket. That exhilarated him and the power of suggestion gave the rest. And Dr. Mala's secret is still safe? Yes, Mala. But I destroyed it. You see, there was good and bad in that liquid of youth. Dr. Mala wanted to give the world the good. And Colin sought to spread its evil, spread it with an army of deathless soldiers marching like a scourge across the face of the earth. They're both dead now, and their secret has died with them.

57want to talk about how transition is serious business. Like a lot of trans folks, I've taken a lot of serious losses for the sake of my transition and some things that we deal with are so heavy, so messy that recovery means healing all the things that get scratched bare in the process for a deeper freedom sake. For me, I needed a lot of medical care to get into a body that I could dare to heal spiritually. So my larger writing project is on the surprising lessons. I'm still learning from this deeper ongoing project to live life for ourselves. This excerpt from my writing is on a key part of trans stories that we we sometimes talk around. Bodily
02reclamation. At some point, happy or sad, strong or fatigued, safe or compromised, these things stopped mattering. I needed something in a way that trumped all the rest because suddenly what was most real for me in that period was a necessary change that I finally understood like a sky opening. When the dysphoria finally cut through the mix and I could identify it clearly above all else, not background mass, that I'm still dealing with now, I was suddenly so concerned with distinctions, gender, sex characteristics, my place in society and family, becoming and being properly seen as me was somehow going to fix things I
07hardly had words for still, but on those shallower metrics I was often okay all things considered. Yet there is always more tied up in transition because we are whole people, not just gendered beings. And no matter how much we talk about the trans issue, the real heavy life stuff we face won't fit on a poster or a diagram, it can't be contained or put in a slogan, it's just fucking life. So now, I care more for what's elusive, what defies gender let alone labels, looking in the mirror got a lot easier after all when I realized the observable meaning of me doesn't need to matter so long as I can know for myself that this body is mine. I do label it mine now in a way I hadn't before that I couldn't such unrest spending so
14much energy improving it on one hand and degrading it on the other, but this period is different, a present ever unfolding defined by this flesh and a spiritual journey in it, not just owning it but growing through it into whatever comes next, that is reclamation. A word so many of my sisters use another trauma coded term we drop, a key word, a high praise while keeping the spiritual process to ourselves. And the less spiritual oftentimes carnal parts of the process are also precious though delicate. We've all been there even though some of us cherish the innocence of our newfound invagination while others chase liberation through each other's bodies. What does it mean to reclaim though and why do so many of us need that? That's the mess I care about, not gender, some of us
25say we take ourselves back from systems, power structures, economies, some from individuals, or even just toxicities we've internalized, for others still sappy folks like myself. Transition is not just taking it back from others demands, but restoring it to care after years of neglect. Yes, it's less a rebellious season than taking into one's own arms again. The grace of self-gift could the music be sappy or I didn't realize how bankrupt my body spirit self had become, mid-transition until I befriended dare I say.
31The ultimate others, the others in ourselves, for me this was the people daring to do what I felt I had been doing my whole life. I met people, people who taught me about my shadows and it was devastating to face them, that I was still hiring out something these girls of the night knew to protect not my body but my sense of self years later when I had already done so much work to free and protect myself. Protect myself, but was still a mess still reeling. I reconnected with another sister with a gift for these
37harsh realizations. She said something that rang through me like a bell so large it was as physical as it was audible quaking my flesh. She had misunderstood the real meaning of safety. The difference between us was not a matter of dignity or experience but progress in healing I saw. I had my own way had ignored the dignity of my body too long and broken it. Perhaps it wasn't something to repair so much as to rediscover. See I'm not really sure I ever reclaimed my body. I'll take credit for all the work in therapy sure but it's like the body finally just does its job. The shape, texture, color of my
41reflection is no matter but the flesh I can and can't feel each time I sit down. The sensations of zipping up a warm coat snub around my breasts it just makes sense to be this here and finally even its instincts the deep within actually makes sense. I need not resist let alone attack them. I don't just want this body it wants me it wants us to stick around that my dears is what reclamation means to me now that I get to let my body guide me both practically and spiritually. There have been many surprises once I open to it the biggest I just get to be
37so much I want you know time to get you so back with our DJs and make way for dreadlocks. Listen to the music I play I love the audience. I read that they would never do that. She make you happy all day. She make you
