There's a list of items prepared for a mission to the moon that sounds less like a flight manifest and more like a very specific grocery run. 189 unique items, 43 cups of coffee, and exactly 58 tortillas, no more and no less. For the four astronauts assigned to Artemis 2, a 10-day mission that's going to loop around the moon at a distance of roughly 238,000 miles or 384,000 kilometers, those numbers, they're not just a menu, they're the boundaries of their world. Inside the Orion spacecraft, with a habitable volume of about 316 cubic feet or 8.95 cubic meters, the crew will live under constraints that trace back to the earliest days of human space flight. The first is the no refrigeration rule. Unlike the International Space Station, which receives regular cargo deliveries, Orion carries everything that it needs from launch. There's no refrigeration system and every calorie must be self-stable, vacuum sealed, and safe for the full duration of the

mission. What is packed before liftoff is all that's going to exist until they splash down. Now the second constraint, it's kind of small but serious. You see a microgravity, a bread grommet doesn't fall, it drifts into ventilation systems and electronics, and this is why tortillas replaced bread in American spaceflight in 1985 during a space shuttle program mission. You see a tortilla holds together, so it solves a physical problem. The Artemis II crew, three Americans, one Canadian, tested and rated their meals months in events. Each astronaut requires roughly 2800 to 3200 calories every day to maintain performance in microgravity. Over 10 days that becomes a tightly controlled inventory of energy weight, and volume. They selected barbecued beef brisket, macaroni and cheese, and mango salad. They also chose five varieties of hot sauce. In microgravity, fluid shifts reduce the

sense of taste and smell. Strong flavors, well they help compensate. So each meal is rehydrated using a controlled water system and warmed in a compact heater above the size of a briefcase, and then you use that extra spicy hot sauce. It's a closed system, no substitutions, no resupply. So when you look at that manifest, those 189 items and those 58 tortillas, you're not looking at a menu. You're looking at a measured system of survival, calculated down to volume, calories, and containment. All designed to carry four people, I'll pass low Earth orbit and bring them all the way back home. The rocket, it provides the force to leave Earth, but it's the sealed meals, the controlled water and the counted coffee to sustain the human beings inside the capsule.
