南国のパラオは戦前までは日本の統治下にあったが、
太平洋戦争で絶対国防圏が破られるとフィリピン攻略の際の足がかりとして
米軍の侵攻を受けた。
日本軍の守備隊は消耗戦を強いられたことで米軍にかなりの損害を与えるが、
相対した日本兵のほぼ全てが亡くなる犠牲の多い戦いとなった。
