北投，倚靠在大屯火山群的山腳下，順著大屯山流進淡水河的磺溪沿路，因為盛產硫磺，有許多天然溫泉分布，最初，這裡是平埔族凱達格蘭族的居住地，終年瀰漫的硫磺臭味與熱氣，讓早期的先人們心生恐懼，認為是女巫施法所致，便以「女巫」為此地命名，而在凱達格蘭語中，女巫叫做Patauw，後來便直接音譯成如今的北投
