وصف النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ربه تعالى بالحياء ، وحياء الله لا تدركه الأفهام ، ولا تكيفه العقول ؛ فهو حياء كرم وبر وجود وجلال ؛ فإن الله سبحانه وتعالى من رحمته وكرمه وكماله وحلمه يستحيي من هتك عبده وفضيحته وإحلال العقوبة به ، ويستحيي سبحانه أن يرد من يمد إليه يديه ، وهو سبحانه يحب أهل الحياء .
قال ابن القيم :
وهو الحيي فليس يفضح عبده ***** عند التجاهر منه بالعصيان
لـكنه يـلـقي عليه ستره ***** فهو الستير وصاحب الغفران
